Annual Oktober Weinfest (October 5th, 2019)
October 5 @ 3:00 pm - 6:30 pm
ANNOUNCING GERMAN WINE SOCIETY OKTOBER WEINFEST IN THE MAGNIFICENT MOSEL!
“Tasting a superlative Moselle can be an aesthetic experience no less genuine than hearing a Mozart concerto well played, or seeing for the first time one of Breughel’s paintings.” Frank Schoonmaker, The Wines of Germany (1956).
This year the German Wine Society will celebrate its annual Oktober Weinfest by savoring the wonderful wines of the Mosel. This wine region has long been famed for its outstanding Rieslings, grown in the slate of steep-sided vineyards lining the winding river banks. Here are found many of the best-known vineyards and producers in all of Germany, and in this tasting, accompanied by an Oktoberfest meal, you will have the opportunity to sample a wide variety of the best the Mosel has to offer.
We will gather on Saturday, October 5 starting at 3 pm for sign-in, with the event beginning at 3:30 pm, at the Harbour Square clubroom, 500 N Street, SW, Washington, DC. Our member Marilyn Scarborough has reserved a few parking spaces, but we cannot guarantee parking for all. The Waterfront Metro Station (Green Line) is also within walking distance nearby.
The 15 wunderbar Mosel wines we will enjoy cover nearly all of the most renowned Grosslage areas of the Middle Mosel in Bereich (wine district) Bernkastel, as well as parts of the Upper Mosel and adjoining Luxembourg:

Along with this outstanding array of wines served from the four wine tables, we will share a buffet meal with various German sausages such as Knackwurst and Weisswurst, potato salad, cheeses, pretzel rolls with mustard, Oktoberfest stuffed pretzels, and almond apple strudel for dessert. Any members or guests who would like to bring a favorite German-style dish to share should contact the organizer; reasonable costs for supplies can be reimbursed by prior agreement with receipts. We will also need volunteers to man several wine tables and discuss the wines; volunteers will be told in advance which wines they will have at their table to have a chance to research them and prepare any vineyard pictures or information sheets desired. Volunteers at the tables play an essential role in our event, and should be sure to have a spouse or friend on hand to help bring them wines from the other tables and food, and cover the table if breaks are needed. Those manning wine tables will have the first opportunity to claim some favorite opened, unfinished wines at the end of the tasting.
The price for this event will be $68 for members, and $75 for non-members. Registration is due by Sunday, Sept. 30, 2019 to give us sufficient time to ensure wine and food for all and provide a full list of guests to building staff.
There are two ways to register for the Oktober Weinfest. To register and pay electronically by PayPal, you will need to register as either a member or a non-member guest, and have a PayPal account already established to complete payment.
