Delaware Chapter Tasting (4/12/18)

Happy Spring (?) Taking a leap of faith that it will finally stop snowing in April, we are pleased to announce our next tasting.

For our next event, we welcome once more David Martin of Citadel Trading Corporation. David will be reacquainting us with three venerable estates that have lacked a strong sponsor in our area for quite a while: Schloss Vollrads in the Rheingau,  Frederick Wilhelm Gymnasium in the Mosel, and Franz Keller in Baden, and adding the Bischofliche Weinguter and Markus Molitor, two more classical Mosel estates. Viticulture of Riesling began at Schloss Vollrads 800 years ago, and almost 500 years ago at Friedrich Wilhelm Gymnasium. Both estates are rich in history and produce iconic wines that are benchmarks in their growing districts. The Bischofliche Weinguter was formed in 1966 by the merger of three iconic estates: the Bischofliches Konvikt, established in 1840, the Bischofliches Priesterseminar, established in 1773, and the Hohe Domkirche, established in 1851. Weingut Markus Molitor acquired a property built as a winery at the end of the 19th century in 1984. The estate completed extensive renovations from 2009 – 2012, and won an award for architecture in 2013. The estate produces wine from virtually every top site in the Mosel. With German red wines rising in prominence and rose season just around the corner (we hope!) we will sample the Pinot Noir rose of Franz Keller. These fine estate wines will be bookended by an exceptional sparkling wine to start and an excellent value ice wine to conclude.  Please plan to join us for what will be a terrific event. The wines to be poured are:

“Relax” sparkling wine
2016 Franz Keller Pinot Noir Rose
2014 Schloss Vollrads Riesling Kabinett Medium Dry
2013 Friedrich Wilhelm Gymnasium Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett
2015 Bischofliche Weinguter Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett
2
008 Markus Molitor Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Spatlese
2015 Bischofliche Weinguter Scharzhofberger Riesling Spatlese
2016 Schmitt Sohne Ice Wine

The tasting will be held at the award winning Caffe Aldo Lamberti in Cherry Hill, NJ. Recently honored by the Wine Spectator for their wine selection, our Chapter has enjoyed the wonderful service and outstanding food at this location for the past several years. For this event, a cold anti pasta and hot appetizers served family style will be included with the tasting. By popular request, the hot appetizers will feature some new items. Please plan to join us for this very special event.
