German Wine Society Red Wines Dinner Tasting – Nov. 13, 2021

November 13, 2021 @ 5:30 pm - 9:30 pm

One of the goals of the German Wine Society is education, so we regularly present wines that may be less familiar to our members and guests.  This year, we are offering a tasting of twelve red wines made from German grape varieties, including some produced in other countries.  These wines cover a wide range of tastes, familiar and not so familiar.  The share of red wines among German wine production has increased over the past few decades from a mere 10% in the 1980s to about a third today.  Global warming and greater interest in red wines have driven this change.

German red wines made the news recently, due to the severe flooding in Northwest Germany, which badly affected the Ahr wine region, known for making mainly red wines.  We have a very high quality wine from that region, from Weingut Mayer-NäkelThis winery was very close to the river and severely damaged.  Five German wine regions, and three other countries, are represented in the tasting.  Old Europe, the restaurant in Washington, D.C. hosting our event, will provide a seasonal German buffet dinner to complement the wines.  The menu has not yet been finalized, but is expected to include an appetizer platter, entrees such as beef gulasch with spatzle, seasonal vegetables, and desserts including strudel and chocolate cake.
