GWS New Vintage Tasting (2020 Wines) with Phil Bernstein – May 20th, 2022

Every year we host a tasting to try German wines from the new vintage, with a focus on Riesling. Our host is Phil Bernstein, General Manager of MacArthur Beverages, one of the leading retailers of German Riesling in the country. Every year, Phil brings fabulous wines for us to try and this year will definitely be no exception. We now have a tentative wine list for the event to share with you.
The new vintage is 2020. Last year we tasted the wines of 2018 and 2019, so this event brings us up to date. Early reports describe the 2020 wines as: beautiful, elegant, classic. John Gilman writes that some of the 2020s are the best young German Rieslings he has ever tasted. We will be enjoying 10 German wines from 2020 plus a welcoming sparkling wine, with a variety of Feinherb, GG, Kabinett, Spätlese and Auslese. The tentative list is below. As those who have attended previous New Vintage events are aware, Phil always chooses a good mix of high-quality producers for us, with both dry wines and sweet wines of various prädikat levels. There will also be a selection of cheeses, breads or crackers, cold cuts and veggies provided to accompany the tasting.

REGISTRATION DEADLINE: Tuesday, May 17, 2022.
VENUE: The Colonnades, 2801 New Mexico Ave, NW, Washington, DC. There is parking on New Mexico Ave and valet parking for a small fee. Please be sure to reserve on time for this popular event, as we have a capacity limit of 50 at this location, as we did last year. This event is taking place in the Party Room, entered through the Card Room – turn right from the main lobby after you come into the building.
COST: $56 per person for members, $66 per person for non-members.

We normally have two ways to register and pay for our events, either sending a check and the registration form through the mail, or registering online through out website and submitting payment using a PayPal account. However, we are experiencing difficulties with loading new event announcements and payment links on our website at present, and it does not appear those problems will be resolved before this event takes place, so for this event, we are asking all members and guests to pay using the traditional method of mailing the form with a check. To register and pay by check, complete the form below, and detach and mail it, with your check made out to the ‘German Wine Society’, to the Chapter President and Secretary, Carl Willner, at: 1014 Reserve Champion Drive, Rockville, MD 20850. If registering as a member and your dues are not current (confirm with the Secretary first if not sure), also include a payment of $35 for dues, as an individual or a couple.
Once the website is working properly, if this happens in time, an event announcement will be posted there with a payment link. As it is unlikely that we will have the website available, though, we encourage you to register now by the one method we have available. Registration and payment by PayPal, when this is working, is done through our chapter website: germanwinesocietydc.org. If you will be making a payment online to register for our Society’s events, or to pay membership dues ($35 per person or couple, annually), please be sure to have a PayPal account established to use; we cannot accept payment by other forms of credit.
For the safety of all of our members and guests, we are continuing to require that participants in this event provide proof of vaccination for covid-19. Please be prepared to show proof of vaccination (a physical vaccination card or legible electronic image) when arriving at the event, or send proof in advance to the Chapter President and Secretary at the email address above. Masks are optional for this event, unless the District of Columbia health authorities or the Colonnade re-impose a masking requirement before the event date.
All GWS members are reminded that alcohol consumption can lead to intoxication. Therefore, Society members and their guests are expected to drink in moderation at Society events. Please bear in mind the usual precautions about either taking public transportation or a taxi/Uber (unfortunately the Colonnade is not near a Metro stop), having a designated driver where available, or mostly tasting rather than consuming alcohol when such drivers are not available. All participants must be of legal age (21 years of age or older) to join the event and consume alcoholic beverages.
