SUMMARY:GWS Capital Chapter Membership Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Dear Members and Friends of the German Wine Society\,Prosit Neujahr! Online registration for the 2026 Capital Chapter Membership Meeting is now open! Please make reservations by Monday\, February 16\, 2026.  This year’s Membership Meeting will take place on Saturday\, February 21\, 2026\, starting at 4:00 pm EST\, and planned to last until about 6:30 pm.  As with our last Membership Meeting in February 2025\, the Membership Meeting this year will be held online\, using Zoom.  Though the pandemic is over\, flu and other viruses still abound during this winter\, and meeting virtually also avoids the risk of having to postpone for inclement weather\, while permitting our members in more distant locations to attend conveniently.  You will need to have access to Zoom to participate in the meeting\, either downloaded on your computer or otherwise available through your browser (please note\, however\, that there is an option for members to vote in the election by mail even if you do not have Zoom access).  Everyone who provides notification of their intent to come (by registering on the website\, by mail or by email to the Secretary) will receive a Zoom link from Board member Karen Stokes by email prior to the event\, which can be used to log in at the start time.  The meeting’s start time at 4:00 pm EST allows members to finish in time for dinner\, and also allows members who may be in Europe to participate.    Our agenda will begin with reports from the officers of the Chapter\, including discussion of our finances\, membership\, and cellar status\, followed by the Board election\, and then open discussion of other chapter business and questions\, and plans for the future.  What would you like to have the Society do – what are your expectations? The Board needs to know!  The business portion of the meeting will be followed by the fun part – a multiple-choice quiz on knowledge of German wines with the chance to win several wine prizes from our cellar (to be delivered at the next in-person events the winners attend\, or by arrangement with the Cellarmaster for pickup).   We anticipate awarding four wine prizes\, and here is the list of five wines from which the prize winners can choose\, in order of the highest scores achieved: 2023 Keller Vom muscheligen Kalk\, Pinot Blanc/Pinot Gris/Silvaner/Chardonnay blend\, Rheinhessen2023 Schäfer-Fröhlich Vulkangestein\, Riesling Trocken\, Nahe2020 Schloss Lieser Juffer Sonnenuhr\, Riesling Spätlese\, Mosel2022 Enderle & Moll\, Pinot Noir\, Baden2023 Vollenweider Wolfer Goldgrube\, Riesling Kabinett\, MoselOf course\, as this is an online event\, members will supply their own choice of wines\, cheeses and other foods\, and there will be an opportunity to discuss your wine choices with other participants\, as we did during the last Membership Meeting.  Members in good standing (current on dues) pay nothing for this event (but still need to register via our website or mail\, or by email to the Secretary\, so that we can have an accurate count of who is coming and can send the Zoom link to everyone); non-members (including those who have been registered as members before but are not current on dues) pay $15 each\, through website registration using PayPal or by check.    It is at this annual meeting we elect new officers and directors to the Chapter Board.   Only members in good standing\, with annual dues payments current\, are entitled to vote in the election or to attend this event free of charge; $35 annual dues payments per individual or couple may be made online through the website using PayPal or by check to ensure that you are current\, before the meeting.   A dues payment made prior to the meeting is sufficient to restore membership status and allow you to attend without charge and participate in the election.  Please contact the Secretary if you are not sure whether you are current. Members can vote in person at the meeting\, or by returning their written ballots (found at the end of the attached candidate statements) by February 16\, 2026. Candidate statements and the ballot form (for those who will not be voting in person at the election but would still like to submit a vote) are attached to this notice in a separate document\, in the version of the notice sent by e-mail.  Nominations of other candidates than those listed below and on the attached ballot have to be received by no later than Saturday\, February 7\, 2026\, under our By-Laws\, so as to allow revised ballots for the election to be prepared and distributed.  Most of the candidates running have already been serving in their positions\, but we have two new Director candidates\, one of whom has previously served on the Board.  The Chapter President is also running for Chapter Secretary\, in the absence of a separate candidate to fill the Secretary position; he was elected to serve in both capacities for the past five years.  As part of this meeting\, we will also recognize the service of Jim Palanchar\, who is stepping down from his position as Director after several years on the Board. The candidates running for positions on the Board this election are: Carl Willner – for Chapter President and Secretary (positions listed separately on ballot)Christian Schiller – for Chapter Vice PresidentKen Belsley – for Chapter TreasurerKaren Stokes – for Director\, also serving as CellarmasterKlaus Teuter – for Director\, also serving as WebmasterMaria So – for DirectorAnnette Schiller – for DirectorOur By-Laws do not permit nominations from the floor at the meeting for any position for which a candidate is already running\, but only in advance so that ballots for a disputed election can be prepared\, although floor nominations for uncontested positions are allowed.  For this election\, all Board positions have one candidate running.  You can give back to the Chapter by seeking to join the Board\, or by volunteering to plan or help with a monthly tasting.  Your active participation in planning and managing events helps the organization grow – and to do so in the direction you choose.  All correspondence in response to this email should be directed to our President and Secretary\, Carl Willner\, by email to carl.willner1@verizon.net or by mail at: Carl Willner1014 Reserve Champion DriveRockville\, MD 20850Our website address for online registration is at http://germanwinesocietydc.org .    If you are attending as a non-member and need to pay online\, please be sure to have a PayPal account in advance\, as we cannot accept payments by other forms of credit.  If you decide to register by mail\, please mail your registration (and check\, made out to the German Wine Society\, if registering as a non-member) to the Chapter Secretary\, Carl Willner\, whose address is listed above. All GWS members and guests are reminded that alcohol consumption can lead to intoxication. Therefore Society members and their guests are expected to drink in moderation at Society events. Fortunately\, one of the benefits of holding an online event is that most of you will be safely at home and not driving to the event\, but should you decide to visit a friend in order to participate from there\, please bear in mind the usual cautions about having a designated driver where available\, or mostly tasting rather than consuming alcohol when such drivers are not available.  Drinking in moderation will also help to avoid any mishaps using your computer!  Carl WillnerPresident and SecretaryGerman Wine Society Capital Chapter  ___________________________________________________________________________________Please clip and return this registration form if registering by mail\, to the Secretary at the address listed above.  Do not return the entire event notice.   If you are voting by mail rather than by participating in the online meeting\, please also clip the ballot form from the attached Candidate Statement and return that to the Secretary. Reservation Form for GERMAN WINE SOCIETY CAPITAL CHAPTER MEMBERSHIP MEETING\, SATURDAY\, FEBRUARY 21\, 2026 Name(s) _______________________________________________________________ Member or non-Member __________________________________________________ Payment submitted _______________________________________________________ E-mail contact ____________________________________________________________ Telephone contact _________________________________________________________\nRegister for this Event

Event organizer: Kevin Ross\, 570-561-6540\, keviross@gmail.com\n\n\nRegister for this Event Candidate Statements 2017 Candidate Statement of Carl Willner (for Chapter President) Carl has been a member of the German Wine Society for over 20 years and a member of the board for five years\, having previously served as a director and as Chapter Vice President before being elected Chapter President in the spring of 2015.   During the past six years\, he has been responsible for planning numerous GWS events:  the tastings at the Embassy of Luxembourg in March 2011\, October 2013\, and April 2016\, the Spargelfest dinners at Café Mozart in May 2013\, 2014\, and 2016\, and at the German Embassy in May 2015\, the Mosel/Moselle themed Oktoberfest in October 2014\, the Oktober Weinfest tours of German wine regions at the German Embassy in September 2015 and 2016\, and the Richard Böcking winemaker event in November 2015.   He has also helped conduct several other events including membership meetings and two Oktoberfests\, and was in charge of updating our by-laws in 2013.  German wines have long been a part of Carl’s life – his grandparents from Bavaria ran a German restaurant in upstate New York – so the German Wine Society naturally became a part of his life in Washington.   During his two years as President\, Carl has overseen our return to the German Embassy for events\, the development of our new website and introduction of the ability to register for events electronically using Paypal\, and outreach to new members\, which has led to our chapter membership more than doubling\, the first major increases in recent years.   He looks forward to continuing to lead our chapter into the future\, with the goal of several interesting and educational events each year\, maintaining good relationships with the German and other embassies\, and a continued wine cellar on a modest scale with a more focused acquisition strategy including high-quality wines.   During the coming year\, Carl would like to lead our chapter in hosting the 40th Anniversary celebration of the German Wine Society\, the first national GWS event in a decade.  He will also work to ensure that the German Wine Society remains accountable and responsive to the interests of its members. Candidate Statement of Christian Schiller (for Vice president) A member of the German Wine Society since he came to the USA in 1983 and a member of the Board since 2010. He has a broad background in international finance and economics. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Mainz\, Germany. Before his retirement in 2010\, he worked for almost 30 years at the International Monetary Fund. With his retirement\, he started to write about wine and was accepted by the International Federation of Wine and Spirits Journalists and Writers. His main outlet for his writing is his daily wine blog “schiller-wine\,” but he has also published in “Falstaff\,” “Weinfeder” and other journals. Many of his publications are on German wine. He has organized many interesting wine events and plans to continue to do so. Candidate Statement of Joseph Aguiar:  (for Secretary) I became a member of the German Wine Society in September 2015 and joined the board in February 2016. In my first year\, I planned the “Rieslings of the World” tasting in June\, co-organized the November 2016 Riesling tasting with Weygandt Wines\, and selected the wine list for the 2016 Holiday Party. I believe that German wine is not just of exceptionally high quality: it has a global footprint and inspires wine makers from Keuka\, NY to Eden Valley\, Australia to strive to bring the great German varietals to their own homes. German wine for me is the perfect blend of serious quality\, great value\, terroir\, and fascinating story-telling. I completed the Wine and Spirits Education Trust (WSET) Level III examination in April 2016 and am currently preparing for the Court of Master Sommeliers’ Certified Sommelier exam. When I began to study wine intensely\, the Mosel River Valley was and continues to be one of the world’s most fascinating wine regions for me. The steep slopes\, dark soils\, and moderating effects of the river combine to make it a viticulture marvel. Riesling achieves greatness there\, and\, as a native New Yorker\, I have come to appreciate the Finger Lakes’ Rieslings as a tip of the hat to the grape’s ancestral home in Germany. Please consider me for election to the position of Secretary\, GWS – Capital Chapter. Candidate Statement of Mike Fritze:  (for Board Member) Mike Fritze developed his interest in German wines growing up in a German-American family in N.J. He developed a passion for wine during his work-related travels through the U.S. and Europe where he took the time to visit local vineyards and wineries.  Mike recently completed his second year of a 3-year AWS wine judge certification class.   He is also an avid home winemaker focusing mainly on VA fruit which can be locally sourced.   He has been a member of the German Wine society for nearly 10 years recently taking on a Board level position as Secretary where he is responsible for tracking membership records\, event signups\, and overall event planning with the rest of the board.  He will be stepping down from his secretary role to focus on starting his new vineyard in Waterford\, VA.  Over the years he has led a number of tastings at GWS including popular German red wine focused events.   He is excited to be part of the Board and have an impact on future directions of the GWS.   Candidate Statement of David Roehm:  (for Treasurer and Cellar Master) I am a long-time member of the German Wine Society.  I have been Treasurer for 15 years and am now Cellar Master as well.  I love German Wines\, particularly Mosel Rieslings\, and have had the wonderful experience of attending the German Wine Academy.  During my tenure as Treasurer\, we have striven to keep adequate funds in the Treasury while maintaining reasonable prices for events.  I maintain the Society Wine Cellar in my basement.  I have a background in management consulting and finance\, including an MBA and experience as a CFO.  Candidate Statement of Kevin Ross (for Board Member) Kevin Ross has been active in the German Wine Society for approximately three years\, during which time he set up the chapter’s current website. Innovations include an ecommerce payment system as well as an events calendar for all past and future events. Kevin greatly enjoys the wines of all the culturally Germanic countries like Alsace\, Alto Adige\, Austria and of course Germany. Candidate Statement of Hanne Caraher (for Board Member) Hanne Caraher served the German Wine Society as secretary for well over 20 years before she resigned two years ago. She would like to continue as a member of the chapter board to help pursue and achieve the society’s goals.Candidate Statement of Alexander Friedman (for Board Member) Alexander Friedman was born in Los Angeles\, was raised in New York City and Minnetonka\, MN\, and is a financial broker by trade. His ancestors were winegrowers in Leimersheim\, Pfalz\, Germany\, only a few miles from the famous Deutsche Weinstrasse. An advocate for German American culture and history\, Al has been active in the German Wine Society since moving to DC in 2015\, and is also a member of the German American Heritage Society of the United States. He runs a 10-person tasting group in DC that meets monthly and is always seeking out wine from new producers or obscure varietals. He currently holds the Wine and Spirits Education Trust (WSET) Level 2 certification and is awaiting the results of the WSET Level 3 examination. His other hobbies include hunting\, classical music\, opera\, and working on the family farm in Mott\, North Dakota.

This is your chapter and you can help shape its activities by voting.   Also\, this is your chance to ask questions of  board members who are running for new positions they have not held before\, as well as the new candidates for board membership\, and make your views known on the directions that our chapter should take. Please also consider giving back to the chapter by volunteering to plan a monthly tasting.  The deadline for reservations is Sunday\, March 1. Send your ballot if you are a member and want to vote but will not be present at the meeting\, to German Wine Society\, 5607 Huntington Parkway\, Bethesda\, MD 20814.  If you are a member attending the meeting and are current in your dues\, you can also return your reservation by return e-mail.If you have not paid your annual dues yet (July 1\, 2014 to June 30\, 2015)\, please include $35 with your check (single or couple membership)\, to ensure that you are a member in good standing and entitled to vote. All GWS members and guests are reminded that alcohol consumption can lead to intoxication.  Therefore\, Society members and their guests are expected to drink in moderation at Society events.  It is advisable to provide designated drivers or other modes of transit where available\, or mostly to taste rather than consume alcohol when such drivers or alternative means of transportation are not available. Statements of Candidates: Carl Willner (for president) – He has been a member of the German Wine Society for over 20 years and a member of the board for three years\, serving currently as vice president.   During the past four years\, he was been responsible for planning five successful GWS events:  the tastings at the Embassy of Luxembourg in March 2011 and October 2013\, the Spargelfest dinners at Cafe Mozart in May 2013 and May 2014\, and the Oktoberfest in October 2014. He  also helped conduct several other events including membership meetings and two Oktoberfests\, and was in charge of the updating of our by-laws last year.   German wines have long been a part of his life – his grandparents from Bavaria ran a German restaurant in upstate New York – so the German Wine Society naturally became a significant part of his life in Washington. He looks forward to helping to lead our chapter forward\, with the goals of several interesting and educational events each year – a mixture of dinners and modestly priced tastings\, a return to the German Embassy for some of our events\, outreach to new members including the use of Meetup and our new website inaugurated in 2014\, and a continued wine cellar on a smaller scale with a more focused acquisition strategy including high-quality wines.   Christian Schiller (for vice president) — A member of the German Wine Society since he came to the USA in 1983 and a member of the Board since 2010. In June 2014\, he arranged a wine tasting with the German Wine Princess. David Roehm (for treasurer) — He has been a member of the German Wine Society for more than 20 years and treasurer for more than 10 years. He loves German wines\, particularly Mosel Rieslings\, and had the wonderful experience of attending the German Wine Academy. During his tenure as treasurer\, we have striven to keep adequate funds in the treasury while maintaining reasonable prices for events and an adequate wine cellar. He is mostly retired now\, but his background is in management consulting and finance\, including an MBA and experience as a CFO. Alan Knapp (for secretary) — A member since the late nineties\, a board member since 2005\, currently serving as president\, He has focused on three intertwined goals: interesting yet varied tastings that reflect the variety and quality of Germany’s wines\, a responsibly sized cellar preserving vintages for our future enjoyment when they might otherwise be unattainable\, and financial stewardship that ensures we have the flexibility to experience our wines in great settings from time to time. Throughout\, he has guided the chapter to a consistent\, stable annual calendar of events that allows members to predict and plan for upcoming tastings. Looking forward\, he sees: our chapter reinvigorated\, reaching out to new members while retaining current members; focused\, educational wine experiences in a variety of settings; and an even smaller cellar\, yet of higher wine quality; all while ensuring we have the funds to achieve these goals. Marilyn Scarbrough (for director) – Carol Watkins\, a business acquaintance\, suggested wine tastings as an excellent way to meet people and introduced Marilyn to the German Wine Society soon after her arrival in Washington DC. She joined in 1986 and has been an active member ever since. When Carol wanted to step down from the Board where she served as secretary and membership chair\, Marilyn took over membership and Hanne Caraher accepted secretarial duties. During her tenure on the Board\, Marilyn conducted a survey of membership interests and was actively involved in Board functions\, including the 30-year anniversary celebration of the German Wine Society. After several years spent mending a broken leg\, she returned to serve on the Board and again seeks re-election. Marilyn still believes the German Wine Society is an excellent way to meet the nicest people in Washington and to explore the very best in wines. Hanne Caraher (for director) – A member of the German Wine Society since 1982 and the chapter secretary every year since the late 80s. She would like to continue as director for the next year.   She is also the secretary-treasurer of the National German Wine Society and as such serves as liaison between the chapter and the national office. She has attended the German Wine Academy and taken many trips to taste German wines – seven or eight to visit German wineries\, one to the Alto Adige (Tirol) where they make German-style wines\, and one to Alsace. Her concern for the chapter is that our tastings are educational\, not merely social events. Mike Fritze (for director) – A member of GWS for about eight years. He was raised in a German-American household where he learned to appreciate fine German wine and beer.  He developed his emerging interest in German wine and wine regions during multiple trips visiting family and friends there. He has led several tastings particularly featuring German red wines.  He is interested in running for a board position in order to help plan new events\, activities and tastings. Kevin Ross (for director) – He has been a member of the DC Chapter for little over a year\, though his interest in the wines of Germany extend further back. Attending college as the craft brewing revolution was in full swing\, he enjoyed learning and tasting his way through the beers of the world. Several years later Kevin branched out into wine and has never looked back. His interest became so deep that he took a job at Schneider’s of Capitol Hill\, a local wine store in DC\, where he quickly developed a love of the wines of Germany\, Alto Adige\, Austria\, and Alsace. Kevin has since moved on from his wine store days\, but he continues his love of the Germanic wine regions. Kevin created the DC Chapter’s new website and updates its content.

There will also be short reports on how we arrive at prices for a tasting and the report on the chapter’s finances\, membership\, etc. Please consider giving back to the Chapter by serving on the board or by volunteering to plan a monthly tasting. The membership meeting will be held on Friday\, January 28\, at 7:00 p.m.It is very important that you come and vote at this meeting — it is your chapter and you can help shape its activities by voting. Ballots will be available at the meeting. We recommend you submit nominations by January 26.  Please send them by e-mail to Hanne Caraher\, hcaraher@verizon.net.Members pay nothing for this tasting; non-members pay $15 each. All GWS members and guests are reminded that alcohol consumption can lead to intoxication and therefore Society members and their guests are expected to drink in moderation at Society events. It is advisable to provide designated drivers where available or mostly to taste rather than consume alcohol when such drivers are not available.
