SUMMARY:GWS New Vintage Tasting with Phil Bernstein
DESCRIPTION:Every year we host a tasting to try German wines from the new vintage\, with a focus on Riesling. Our host is Phil Bernstein\, General Manager of MacArthur Beverages\, one of the leading retailers of German Riesling in the country. Every year\, Phil brings some of the best wines of the vintage. The new vintage is 2024\, another in an increasing string of very good vintages\, though regrettably the first to be carrying the increase in wine tariffs.  Mosel Fine Wines says that “2024 is a must-go-to vintage for lovers of classic and ethereal Mosel lightness and elegance!” Vinous Media found that the German wines of 2024 are “sprightly\, sleek\, concentrated Rieslings with exquisite verve and full aromatic development.” Here is your chance to try the 2024s from some of the very best producers! SUMMARY:GWS Capital Chapter Membership Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Dear Members and Friends of the German Wine Society\,Prosit Neujahr! Online registration for the 2026 Capital Chapter Membership Meeting is now open! Please make reservations by Monday\, February 16\, 2026.  This year’s Membership Meeting will take place on Saturday\, February 21\, 2026\, starting at 4:00 pm EST\, and planned to last until about 6:30 pm.  As with our last Membership Meeting in February 2025\, the Membership Meeting this year will be held online\, using Zoom.  Though the pandemic is over\, flu and other viruses still abound during this winter\, and meeting virtually also avoids the risk of having to postpone for inclement weather\, while permitting our members in more distant locations to attend conveniently.  You will need to have access to Zoom to participate in the meeting\, either downloaded on your computer or otherwise available through your browser (please note\, however\, that there is an option for members to vote in the election by mail even if you do not have Zoom access).  Everyone who provides notification of their intent to come (by registering on the website\, by mail or by email to the Secretary) will receive a Zoom link from Board member Karen Stokes by email prior to the event\, which can be used to log in at the start time.  The meeting’s start time at 4:00 pm EST allows members to finish in time for dinner\, and also allows members who may be in Europe to participate.    Our agenda will begin with reports from the officers of the Chapter\, including discussion of our finances\, membership\, and cellar status\, followed by the Board election\, and then open discussion of other chapter business and questions\, and plans for the future.  What would you like to have the Society do – what are your expectations? The Board needs to know!  The business portion of the meeting will be followed by the fun part – a multiple-choice quiz on knowledge of German wines with the chance to win several wine prizes from our cellar (to be delivered at the next in-person events the winners attend\, or by arrangement with the Cellarmaster for pickup).   We anticipate awarding four wine prizes\, and here is the list of five wines from which the prize winners can choose\, in order of the highest scores achieved: 2023 Keller Vom muscheligen Kalk\, Pinot Blanc/Pinot Gris/Silvaner/Chardonnay blend\, Rheinhessen2023 Schäfer-Fröhlich Vulkangestein\, Riesling Trocken\, Nahe2020 Schloss Lieser Juffer Sonnenuhr\, Riesling Spätlese\, Mosel2022 Enderle & Moll\, Pinot Noir\, Baden2023 Vollenweider Wolfer Goldgrube\, Riesling Kabinett\, MoselOf course\, as this is an online event\, members will supply their own choice of wines\, cheeses and other foods\, and there will be an opportunity to discuss your wine choices with other participants\, as we did during the last Membership Meeting.  Members in good standing (current on dues) pay nothing for this event (but still need to register via our website or mail\, or by email to the Secretary\, so that we can have an accurate count of who is coming and can send the Zoom link to everyone); non-members (including those who have been registered as members before but are not current on dues) pay $15 each\, through website registration using PayPal or by check.    It is at this annual meeting we elect new officers and directors to the Chapter Board.   Only members in good standing\, with annual dues payments current\, are entitled to vote in the election or to attend this event free of charge; $35 annual dues payments per individual or couple may be made online through the website using PayPal or by check to ensure that you are current\, before the meeting.   A dues payment made prior to the meeting is sufficient to restore membership status and allow you to attend without charge and participate in the election.  Please contact the Secretary if you are not sure whether you are current. Members can vote in person at the meeting\, or by returning their written ballots (found at the end of the attached candidate statements) by February 16\, 2026. Candidate statements and the ballot form (for those who will not be voting in person at the election but would still like to submit a vote) are attached to this notice in a separate document\, in the version of the notice sent by e-mail.  Nominations of other candidates than those listed below and on the attached ballot have to be received by no later than Saturday\, February 7\, 2026\, under our By-Laws\, so as to allow revised ballots for the election to be prepared and distributed.  Most of the candidates running have already been serving in their positions\, but we have two new Director candidates\, one of whom has previously served on the Board.  The Chapter President is also running for Chapter Secretary\, in the absence of a separate candidate to fill the Secretary position; he was elected to serve in both capacities for the past five years.  As part of this meeting\, we will also recognize the service of Jim Palanchar\, who is stepping down from his position as Director after several years on the Board. The candidates running for positions on the Board this election are: Carl Willner – for Chapter President and Secretary (positions listed separately on ballot)Christian Schiller – for Chapter Vice PresidentKen Belsley – for Chapter TreasurerKaren Stokes – for Director\, also serving as CellarmasterKlaus Teuter – for Director\, also serving as WebmasterMaria So – for DirectorAnnette Schiller – for DirectorOur By-Laws do not permit nominations from the floor at the meeting for any position for which a candidate is already running\, but only in advance so that ballots for a disputed election can be prepared\, although floor nominations for uncontested positions are allowed.  For this election\, all Board positions have one candidate running.  You can give back to the Chapter by seeking to join the Board\, or by volunteering to plan or help with a monthly tasting.  Your active participation in planning and managing events helps the organization grow – and to do so in the direction you choose.  All correspondence in response to this email should be directed to our President and Secretary\, Carl Willner\, by email to carl.willner1@verizon.net or by mail at: Carl Willner1014 Reserve Champion DriveRockville\, MD 20850Our website address for online registration is at http://germanwinesocietydc.org .    If you are attending as a non-member and need to pay online\, please be sure to have a PayPal account in advance\, as we cannot accept payments by other forms of credit.  If you decide to register by mail\, please mail your registration (and check\, made out to the German Wine Society\, if registering as a non-member) to the Chapter Secretary\, Carl Willner\, whose address is listed above. All GWS members and guests are reminded that alcohol consumption can lead to intoxication. Therefore Society members and their guests are expected to drink in moderation at Society events. Fortunately\, one of the benefits of holding an online event is that most of you will be safely at home and not driving to the event\, but should you decide to visit a friend in order to participate from there\, please bear in mind the usual cautions about having a designated driver where available\, or mostly tasting rather than consuming alcohol when such drivers are not available.  Drinking in moderation will also help to avoid any mishaps using your computer!  Carl WillnerPresident and SecretaryGerman Wine Society Capital Chapter  ___________________________________________________________________________________Please clip and return this registration form if registering by mail\, to the Secretary at the address listed above.  Do not return the entire event notice.   If you are voting by mail rather than by participating in the online meeting\, please also clip the ballot form from the attached Candidate Statement and return that to the Secretary. Reservation Form for GERMAN WINE SOCIETY CAPITAL CHAPTER MEMBERSHIP MEETING\, SATURDAY\, FEBRUARY 21\, 2026 Name(s) _______________________________________________________________ Member or non-Member __________________________________________________ Payment submitted _______________________________________________________ E-mail contact ____________________________________________________________ Telephone contact _________________________________________________________\nRegister for this Event

SUMMARY:The German Wine Society Celebrates Oktober Weinfest
DESCRIPTION:It is a pleasure to announce that the German Wine Society’s Capital Chapter will once again be celebrating its Oktober Weinfest!   This year we will be holding our fall harvest commemoration at the King Farm Community Center in Rockville\, MD\, where we have been hosting most of our New Vintage tastings in recent years.   We will be offering a bountiful spread of traditional German-style Binkert’s sausages\, Oktoberfest treats from the Heidelberg Bakery such as pretzels and pretzel sandwiches\, Oktoberfest cookies\, potato salad and sauerkraut\, and also homemade apple strudel.   And we will be enjoying twelve different German wines\, including sparkling\, red\, and Riesling dry\, Kabinett and Spätlese wines\, representing various top producers and seven of the thirteen wine regions of Germany – Mosel\, Rheingau\, Rheinhessen\, Nahe\, Ahr\, Baden\, and Pfalz.  We have been fortunate to acquire these wines at pre-tariff prices.  The price for this event is a very reasonable $80 for members\, and $87 for non-members.  Please plan to join us to share our love of German wine!   Registration for this event must be received by Monday\, October 6\, 2025.    Our “Oktober Weinfest” is being held just after the famed Munich Oktoberfest in Germany\, which runs this year from September 20 through October 5.   The fall harvest in Germany is not just celebrated with beer.  There are also numerous wine festivals in the fall\, including: the Moselfest Winningen\, Germany’s oldest wine festival\, from August 30 to September 6;  the Dürkheimer Wurstmarkt in Bad Dürkheim\, the world’s largest wine festival\, in September; the German Grape Harvest Festival in Neustadt in late September and early October; the Mainzer Weinmarkt in Mainz; the Stuttgarter Weindorf in Stuttgart; and the Ingelheimer Rotweinfest from September 28 to October 6.   We hope to bring you a flavor of all these wonderful traditions! The Oktober Weinfest event will take place on the evening of Saturday\, October 11\, 2025\, from 5:30 pm to 9 pm\, with admission beginning at 5 pm to the King Farm Community Center at 300 Saddle Ridge Circle\, Rockville\, MD 20850.    Please park in the lot behind the swimming pool adjacent to the community center\, and then come around to the front of the circle (not through the pool area) to enter the building. The Shady Grove Metro station on the Red Line is right across MD-355.  The King Farm shuttle bus does not run on weekends\, so if you are arriving by Metro\, please plan on taking a cab\, or walking from the station\, which takes about 20 minutes.   The format for our event will be informal.  Rather than pouring wines in a set sequence with a presentation\, we will have all the wines available at wine tables\, and participants can sample them in whatever sequence desired\, apart from the welcoming sekt.  Feel free to discuss the wines with the experienced GWS members manning the tables and with the other guests!  Food will be served at a buffet\, and while there will be tables and chairs for all guests\, there will not be any set seating; guests can arrange themselves as desired and can move around between the tables to meet with various people during the event.   And while ample food will be provided\, those who are interested in preparing and bringing a favorite German dish are encouraged to do so\, with prior coordination with the event organizers.  The cost of ingredients for such dishes can be reimbursed if receipts are provided and the organizers agree that the dishes are appropriate.   THE WINES: Welcome Wine – NV Hild Elbling Sekt Brut Mosel 10-13% alc.  Mosel Rieslings: 2021 Vols-Ayler Kupp Riesling Spätlese Mosel 8.5% alc. 2022 J.J. A few of our tasting events have included wines of this region before\, such as the Austro-Hungarian Empire dinner\, but we have never had the opportunity to do a tasting before now focused entirely on the Alto Adige. This is an area where German and Alpine winemaking traditions merge with Italian ones\, on the edge of the German-speaking region of Europe\, and thus a very suitable topic for the German Wine Society. Registrations for this event are due by Tuesday\, September 9\, 2025\, and the price is $50 for GWS members\, $57 for non-members. Please be aware that\, due to limited supply of the wines and size of the venue\, we have a maximum cap of 40 for attendance at this event. Reserve early to avoid disappointment! As the climate gets warmer the wine connoisseur’s focus shifts more and more to higher altitude\, cooler climate regions such as Trentino-Alto Adige in search of elegant\, moderate alcohol wines. We will taste the following wines:The Whites:1. 2022 Riesling\, Kloster Neustift\, Eisacktal\, DOC Alto Adige2. 2023 Weissburgunder\, J.Hofstätter\, Tramin\, DOC Alto Adige3. 2022 Nosiola\, Cesconi Società Agricola\, IGT\, Vigneti Delle Dolomiti4. 2023 Gewürztraminer\, Elena Walch\, Tramin\, DOC Alto AdigeSparkling Wine:5. Enter through the main lobby of the apartment building on the 5th floor\, and then go down to the 2nd floor by elevator and proceed down the hall to the clubroom. First\, you can register on our chapter website\, https://germanwinesocietydc.org \, and make payment by PayPal. You will need to create a GWS account for the website if you do not already have one\, and you will also need to have a PayPal account\, as we cannot accept payment by other forms of credit or online transfer. Trentino-Alto Adige is a fascinating and unique region in the Alps. It boasts of an extraordinary variety of landscapes: snow-capped mountains in the Dolomites\, valleys\, streams\, Lake Garda\, and century-old breathtakingly beautiful towns true to their hybrid Germanic-Italian culture. This region\, situated south of the Alpine Brenner Pass\, has been through a rollercoaster of invasions and was a continuous bone of contention due to its strategic importance. Even in Roman times\, the Brenner Pass was strategically significant\, on the northern frontier of the Empire. In the Middle Ages\, it served as the main connection between Central Europe and Italy for merchants\, pilgrims\, and armies. Finally\, in the early 1600s Trentino (Süd-Tirol)-Alto Adige became part of the Habsburg Empire. After the fall of the Austro-Hungarian Habsburg Empire and the Central Powers after WW I\, this region was annexed by Italy. Countless uprisings by the Germanic population followed and Italy tried to eliminate the German language and culture.Modern-day Süd-Tirol was created in 1948\, after WW II. It was in 1946 that an official agreement was signed which gave this region extensive autonomy. Since the 1970s\, most legislative and administrative powers have been transferred to the two self-governing provinces that make up the region: the province of Trento\, commonly known as Trentino and the province of Bolzano (Bozen)\, commonly known as Alto Adige or Süd-Tirol in German. Official languages are German and Italian. The people have Italian citizenship.Trentino-Alto Adige has a very long history of winemaking\, about 3000 years. Trentino-Alto-Adige’s vineyards are true Alpin vineyards on elevations of 700 – 3\,300 ft on mostly gravelly soils. Because of the altitude of this region\, even in the hot and sunny summers night temperatures are always cool and these diurnal temperature differences are excellent for the production of wines of great finesse. This makes the region famous for single variety crisp\, beautiful white wines such as Pinot Bianco (Pinot Blanc)\, Gewürztraminer\, and the indigenous grape Nosiola. In terms of quantity\, more red wine is produced than white. More than 50 percent of all vineyards are planted with the light Schiava (Vernatsch in German). More and more vineyard area has been dedicated to Pinot Nero (Pinot Noir). The red Lagrein vine actually comes originally from Trentino\, but the finest Lagrein grows in Gries on flatter\, lower-lying vineyards directly near Bozen in Alto Adige. The often almost opaque\, dark purple Teroldego Rotaliano\, also an indigenous grape variety of the region\, on the other hand\, comes from one of the few rock-lined valleys in the northern part of Trentino. Trentino is also home of the production of modern style red blends. To register by mail\, please fill out and cut the reservation form below with your check – do not mail the entire notice._______________________________________________________________________REGISTRATION FORM FOR GERMAN WINE SOCIETY ALTO ADIGE TASTING\, SEPTEMBER 13\, 2025$50.00 Members / $57.00 Non-Member GuestsMember(s) Names: _________________________________________________________________Guest(s) Names: _________________________________________________________________Total Enclosed: _________________________________________________________________Daytime Phone Number: __________________________________________________________________E-Mail: __________________________________________________________________\n\nRegister for this Event

SUMMARY:POTOMAC WINE CRUISE
DESCRIPTION:Get ready to cast off on the Potomac for a German wine cruise!  Yes\, the Capital Chapter of the German Wine Society is once again holding our Potomac wine cruise this summer\, back by popular demand after a series of successful voyages.  As we did in July 2021\, 2022\, 2023\, and 2024\, and also regularly for several years in 2010-2013 and earlier\, we will enjoy the traditional GWS summer wine cruise past the beautiful river banks and monuments of our nation’s Capital.   Please join us to taste many wines from Germany and other countries as we cruise along the Potomac for two hours\, from 5 pm to 7 pm on Saturday\, July 19\, 2025.   We will board Capitol River Cruises’ Nightingale from the Georgetown waterfront\, at 3050 K Street N.W.\, Washington\, D.C. – the end of 31st Street\, by the Fiola Mare restaurant.  Be sure to be on the wharf before departure time – the cruise boat cannot wait for late arrivals!   We can accommodate only 60 guests on the Nightingale for this event\, so reserve early to avoid disappointment.  Reservations for this event are due by Monday\, July 14\, 2025\, to give us sufficient time to have enough wine and supplies for all aboard. Parking is readily available in garages along the Georgetown riverfront\, and it is possible to walk from Metro at the Foggy Bottom station as well (if you are a good walker).   We will be providing all the wines for this event\, as well as disposable plastic glasses and cutlery\, paper plates and napkins\, and will also bring deli sandwiches or other snacks and desserts.  Guests are also welcome to bring their own favorite cheeses\, breads or other food on board\, but there will be enough food even if you do not choose to do so. This will be a relaxing cruise\, with no presentation\, allowing everyone to concentrate on the wines\, good company and atmosphere.   There are many outdoor and indoor dining establishments along the Georgetown waterfront for dinner after the cruise\, which we encourage you to try. The Nightingale is a boat we have used for several previous cruises.  It is all on one level\, with tables and chairs\, and a bar area from which we can serve wines (and where you can buy other drinks too if you choose).  It also has protection against inclement weather\, though we have been fortunate with most of our past wine cruises (sometimes we have weathered rain or a brief storm) and reasonably hope for a sunny afternoon once again.  The cruise will take place rain or shine\, unless weather conditions do not allow the cruise to set out safely\, in which case we will reschedule or provide refunds. THE WINES:  The wines for our cruise will be mostly whites but with a few reds. They will be primarily German but with one Austrian wine included as well.  Both dry and sweet wines will be offered\, including several Kabinett and Spätlese prädikat wines and even two Auslese!  Because this is not a formal presentation\, and we will only have one or two bottles on hand of each of the wines listed\, everyone will not get the same wines\, but all on the voyage should have the chance to savor around 10-12 different wines\, out of the 20 types available.  We look forward to sharing the lovely qualities of these German and international wines with our members and guests again.  Here’s the wine list we have planned (wines are single bottles unless two bottles are noted): German Wines (8 of 13 German wine regions represented!) We are eagerly anticipating seeing all of you in person again for this comfortable afternoon on the Potomac! SUMMARY:SPARGELFEST AT THE GERMAN EMBASSY
DESCRIPTION:It is a pleasure to announce that the German Embassy has invited us once again to hold an event  at the German Embassy House!  And for this event\, our asparagus-themed Spargelfest dinner\, we will also have the opportunity to enjoy once again the cuisine of the German Embassy’s new chef\, Mikko Kosenen of Mikko Nordic Fine Foods.  Chef Mikko also operates a restaurant in Washington\, D.C.\, and was formerly executive chef for the Ambassador of Finland.  Please plan to join us to share our love of German wine paired with asparagus dishes\, at the German Embassy where the German Wine Society began. Spring in Washington announces itself with cherry blossoms\, migrating songbirds\, and tasty ramps at farmers’ markets.  In Germany\, nothing epitomizes Spring like the revered white stalks of Spargel (asparagus)!  The green variety is more popular in North America and tends to be available in supermarkets year-round.  Germans\, however\, prefer the white variety that is harvested from mid-April to near the end of June (St. John’s Day)\, and often is harder to find in the United States.  The Germans have given this harvest season its own name – Spargelzeit – and celebrate it with passion.   Though our event is taking place in June this year rather than May\, we are still within the Spargelzeit period in Germany. Rich in nutrients and very low in calories\, asparagus has become a culinary status symbol for many Germans.  To produce white asparagus\, soil is piled up into knee-high banks\, which give the fields their characteristic appearance.  White asparagus grows entirely surrounded by earth\, which protects the slender stalks from sunlight exposure and keeps them from turning green.  This also affects the subtle flavor of it.  The popular vegetable is cultivated in almost all federal states as well as in neighboring countries.  In fact\, Germans consume more white asparagus than their country produces\, so it is necessary to import it. Please join the German Wine Society’s Capital Chapter on the evening of Friday\, June 13\, 2025\, from 5:30 pm to 9:30 pm\, for a five-course asparagus-themed dinner in the German Embassy House\, plus an outdoor reception with served hors d’oeuvres on the Embassy House patio (weather permitting).  Our Spargelfest dinner will feature not only the elegant vegetable in both its green and white versions\, but also fine German wines\, including Silvaner\, known for its affinity with asparagus.  We will have ten wines including eight whites\, of which  two are the classic Franken Silvaners\, a red\, and a sparkling wine\, representing five of Germany’s wine regions (Ahr\, Franken\, Mosel\, Nahe and Rheinhessen).  It has been a tradition of the German Wine Society to hold Spargelfest dinners at this time of year at various locations\, including the German Embassy House\, Cafe Mozart (now regrettably closed)\, and Cafe Berlin two years ago  We look forward to our return to the Embassy where our Society began 48 years ago\, in 1977. Registration for this event must be received by Monday\, June 9\, 2025.    You can register and pay for events in either of two ways.      First\, you can register below on this website and make payment by PayPal.   You will need to create a GWS account for the website if you do not already have one\, and you will also need to have a PayPal account\, as we cannot accept payment by other forms of credit or electronic transfer.  If you are coming as a couple or other group\, you can either register and pay for each individual separately\, or do it as part of a single transaction and complete the payment on PayPal together.  If you do a single transaction\, please also email the Secretary of the GWS Capital Chapter at the address below to provide the names of each individual coming\,.  We will need a complete list of all attendee names in advance for Embassy security\, and the individual names will not all appear on the website form for multiple persons registering together.     Second\, if you prefer to register by mail and pay by check for the event\, please clip off the registration form attached to this notice\, indicate the names of all who will be attending\, and mail a check made out to the German Wine Society in the proper amount along with the form to:     Carl Willner President and Secretary\, GWS Capital Chapter 1014 Reserve Champion Drive Rockville\, MD 20850   You can also reach the Secretary by e-mail at carl.willner1@verizon.net .      Whether you are registering by mail or online\, please be sure to provide the names of all persons for whom you are registering\, and pay the appropriate price depending on whether each person is a member of the German Wine Society (either the Capital Chapter\, or one of the other active chapters in the U.S. or an at-large member with annual dues paid)\, or a non-member.   You can join the GWS Capital Chapter either by using the website and registering to pay annual dues of $35 through PayPal\, or by mail using a check\, in the same manner as registering for the event.   If you have been a member of the GWS Capital Chapter in the past but are not sure of your current membership status\, please email the chapter Secretary at the above e-mail to confirm your status.    Here’s what we have planned for our Spargelfest:   June 13\, 5:30 pm (entry to Embassy compound passing through security beginning 5:30 pm): Reception and wine dinner at the German Embassy House.  Enter at the main Embassy gate on 4645 Reservoir Road\, NW\, Washington\, DC 20007\, and proceed up the stairway alongside the main Embassy building depicted here to the Embassy House on the upper level.   For those who have difficulty ascending the stairs\, escorts from the Embassy staff can bring guests through the Embassy building and up an elevator.   For security purposes\, the Embassy requires a list of all attendees in advance; SUMMARY:GWS New Vintage Tasting with Phil Bernstein
DESCRIPTION:Dear German Wine Society Members and Friends\, Every year we host a tasting to try German wines from the new vintage\, with a focus on Riesling. Our host is Phil Bernstein\, General Manager of MacArthur Beverages\, one of the leading retailers of German Riesling in the country. Every year\, Phil brings some of the best wines of the vintage. The new vintage is 2023\, another in an increasing string of very good vintages. Mosel Fine Wines says the 2023s are wines of zest\, freshness\, and lightness. Vinous Media found many of the wines to be “simply thrilling” and was struck by “how much flavor and expression they cram into an often small footprint” (meaning lighter wines with lower alcohol levels). Here is your chance to try the 2023s from some of the very best producers – and\, with possible tariffs looming\, to try them at pre-tariff prices! DATE:  Friday\, May 16th\, 2025.  Doors open at 6:30 pm; tasting begins at 7:00 pm.   Registrations are due by Monday\, May 12\, 2025. VENUE:  King Farm Community Center\, 300 Saddle Ridge Circle\, Rockville\, MD 20850\, Please park in the lot behind the swimming pool adjacent to the community center\, and then come around to the front of the circle (not through the pool area) to enter the building. The Shady Grove Metro station on the Red Line is right across 355.  The Red Line King Farm shuttle bus runs from there on a route passing the Community Center until about 7:30 pm\, every 20 minutes\, though if returning by Metro you would need to arrange a ride to the station with another guest\, get a cab or walk (about 20 minutes to the station).THE WINES: Welcome Wine – NV Hild Elbling Sekt Brut Mosel Two Trockens Vollenweider Felsenfest Riesling Trocken Mosel Schaefer Fröhlich Vulkangestein Riesling Trocken Nahe A Pair of GGs Peter Lauer Riesling Fass 18 Kupp Grosses Gewächs Mosel Dönnhoff Felsenberg Riesling Grosses Gewächs Nahe Kabinetts Duo Erbes Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Kabinett Mosel Falkenstein Öckfener Bockstein Riesling Kabinett Alte Reben #22 Mia Mosel Willi Schaefer Kabinett Vineyards Comparison Willi Schaefer Graacher Domprobst Riesling Kabinett Mosel Willi Schaefer Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Kabinett Mosel Delicious Spätlese Dönnhoff Niederhäuser Hermannshohle Riesling Spätlese Nahe Willi Haag Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese Mosel An Auslese Finale Schaefer Fröhlich Bockenauer Felseneck Auslese Nahe A tasty buffet of cheeses\, bread\, crackers\, cold cuts\, grapes\, veggies and sweets will be provided to accompany the wines. SUMMARY:Comparative Riesling Tasting: Germany\, Austria\, Alsace UPDATED
DESCRIPTION:We now have the full wine list for our Comparative Riesling Tasting — and there are not just nine wines as originally announced\, but twelve\, a bonus of three sparkling wines!  Please plan to join the German Wine Society on Saturday\, March 29\, 2025 at 7:00 pm for a presentation on the Riesling grape in Germany\, Austria and Alsace\, and tasting of twelve wines to illustrate the varieties of Riesling in these countries\, by our own Annette Schiller.    Registrations for this event are due by Tuesday\, March 25\, 2025\, and the price is $45 for GWS members\, $52 for non-members.  Please be aware that\, due to limited supply of the wines and size of the venue\, we have a maximum cap of 40 for attendance at this event.  Reserve now to avoid disappointment! One of the world’s most celebrated grape varieties is Riesling.  The Riesling is a perfect translator of the soils where it grows. This transparency of terroir means that Rieslings grown in different regions will produce wines with a markedly individual characteristic and distinct taste profile. The three countries whose Rieslings we will compare are all at the heart of Riesling cultivation in Europe.  Germany is the homeland of Riesling\, while Austria and Alsace are the two other major European Riesling producing regions.  Indeed\, Germany has been known in the U.S. mostly for its delicious Rieslings. Riesling is the #1 grape produced in Germany and Germany is also the #1 producer of Riesling world-wide (40% of the global Riesling production is in Germany). But Austria and Alsace\, while known for other varietals too\, both produce outstanding Rieslings as well\, with unique reflections of their own terroir. All wines have been acquired from top-notch wine makers and each flight will be a comparison within the same quality level to be fair to each wine.  There will now be four flights of three wines each\, one from each country\, progressing from sparkling wines to the estate level to village level to single vineyard wines. Flight 1: Sparkling wines 1)    2022 Sekt\, Riesling Reserve\, Brut\, Weingut Steininger\, Kamptal\, Austria  2)    2022 Sekt\, Riesling\, Brut\, Weingut Braunewell\, Rheinhessen\, Germany  3)    NV\, Crémant d’Alsace\, Riesling\, Brut\, Domaine Fey-Sohler\, Alsace   Flight 2: Estate wines 4)    2021 Riesling\, Weingut Steininger\, Kamptal\, Austria  5)    2021 Riesling\, Pur Mineral\, Weingut Rudolf Fürst\, Franken\, Germany  6)    2021 Riesling\, Maison Trimbach\, Alsace  Flight 3: Village level wines       7)   2022 Riesling\, Furth\, Weingut Müller-Grossmann\, Kremstal\, Austria        8)   2023 Riesling\, Birkweiler\, Weingut Rebholz\, Pfalz\, Germany        9)   2022 Riesling\, Berg\, Domaine Melanie Pfister\, Alsace    Flight 4: Single vineyard Grand Cru wines     10) 2022 Riesling Ried Steinertal\, Weingut Tegernseerhof\, Wachau\, Austria      11) 2018 Riesling Hattenheimer Nussbrunnen\, Grand Cru\, Weingut Balthasar Ress\,            Rheingau\, Germany     12) 2021 Riesling\, Grand Cru Schlossberg\, Domaine Weinbach\, Alsace It will be fun to discuss the wines during the tasting and it will be very interesting to hear the verdict of the audience on the favorites A tasty buffet of cheeses\, bread\, crackers\, charcuterie\, grapes and veggies will be provided to accompany the wines.  Our tasting will begin at 7 p.m on Saturday\, March 29\, with the doors opening at 6:30 p.m. to admit guests.  The location is the Van Ness Room that we have often used before for membership meetings and other events\, including our New German Wine Law tasting in 2023\, at 3001 Veazey Terrace NW\, Washington\, DC 20008.  Enter through the main lobby of the apartment building on the 5th floor\, and then go down to the 2nd floor by elevator and proceed down the hall to the clubroom.  While there is not off-street parking at this location\, on-street parking is available (bear in mind DC parking restrictions and meters)\, and there is easy access to Metro\, at the Van Ness Red Line station.   You can register and pay for this event in either of two ways. If you are coming as a couple or other group\, you can either register and pay for each individual separately\, or do it as part of a single transaction and complete the payment on PayPal together.  If you do a single transaction\, please also email the Secretary of the GWS Capital Chapter at the address below to provide the names of each individual coming\, as the individual names will not all appear on the website form for multiple persons registering together. SUMMARY:GWS Membership Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Prosit Neujahr! Online registration for the 2025 Capital Chapter Membership Meeting is now open! Please make reservations by Monday\, February 10\, 2025.  This year’s Membership Meeting will take place on Saturday\, February 15\, 2025\, starting at 4:00 pm EST\, and planned to last until about 6:30 pm.  As with our last Membership Meeting in February 2024\, the Membership Meeting this year will be held online\, using Zoom.  Though the pandemic is officially over\, viruses still abound during this winter\, and meeting virtually also avoids the risk of having to postpone for inclement weather\, while permitting our members in more distant locations to attend conveniently. Of course\, as this is an online event\, members will supply their own choice of wines\, cheeses and other foods\, and there will be an opportunity to discuss your wine choices with other participants\, as we did during the last Membership Meeting. Members can vote in person at the meeting\, or by returning their written ballots (found at the end of the candidate statements) by February 10\, 2025. Candidate statements and the ballot form (for those who will not be voting in person at the election but would still like to submit a vote) are in a separate document\, attached to the version of the notice sent by e-mail to all members.  Nominations of other candidates than those listed below and on the ballot have to be received by no later than Saturday\, February 1\, 2025\, under our By-Laws\, so as to allow revised ballots for the election to be prepared and distributed.  All of the candidates running have already been serving in their positions\, but we have one open Director position without a candidate.  The Chapter President is also running for Chapter Secretary\, in the absence of a separate candidate to fill the Secretary position; he was elected to serve in both capacities for the past four years.   The candidates running for positions on the Board this election are: Carl Willner – for Chapter President and Secretary (positions listed separately on ballot)Christian Schiller – for Chapter Vice PresidentKen Belsley – for Chapter TreasurerJim Palanchar – for DirectorKaren Stokes – for Director\, also serving as CellarmasterKlaus Teuter – for Director\, also serving as WebmasterOur By-Laws do not permit nominations from the floor at the meeting for any position for which a candidate is already running\, but only in advance so that ballots for a disputed election can be prepared\, although floor nominations for uncontested positions are allowed.  For this election\, most Board positions except for one Director slot have one candidate running. If you no longer wish to receive our announcements\, please reply to this email to the sender. Reservation Form for GERMAN WINE SOCIETY CAPITAL CHAPTER MEMBERSHIP MEETING\, SATURDAY\, FEBRUARY 15\, 2025 Name(s) _______________________________________________________________ Member or non-Member __________________________________________________ Payment submitted _______________________________________________________ E-mail contact ____________________________________________________________ Telephone contact _________________________________________________________  \n\nRegister for this Event

DESCRIPTION:INVITATION TO WINE TASTING WITH WINEGUT ÖKONOMIERAT REBHOLZ AT THE GERMAN EMBASSY\, JAN. 16\, 2025   NOTE: This event is FULL. No more reservations are accepted.   The German Wine Society Capital Chapter is proud to announce a very special event at the German Embassy in  Washington\, DC.  Please join us when we organize a tasting of the wines of Weingut Rebholz\, one of the top 5 wine estates in Germany. Twins Hans and Valentin Rebholz are the fourth generation at Weingut Ökonomierat Rebholz (Ökonomierat -Economic  Councillor- is a professional honorary title which is only awarded in this form in the States of Rheinland-Pfalz and Saarland and which honors personalities who have made a particular contribution to agriculture and viticulture in the State) in  Siebeldingen in Germany’s southern Pfalz wine region. The Rebholz family’s connection with wine and winemaking can be  traced back to the 16th century but it was Hans’ and Valentin’s great-grandfather Eduard Rebholz who transformed the  agricultural farm into a wine estate with the clear focus to making pure “natural” wines. Hansjörg and Birgit Rebholz\, the third  generation of the Rebholz family continue what the founder\, the Ökonomierat Eduard Rebholz began: producing highly  individualistic wines by working as close as possible with nature. Today the winery is certified biodynamic. The Rebholz  wines do not undergo any chaptalization\, fining\, or deacidifying nor will sweet reserve be added to stay true to the  individuality of the terroir\, the climate\, and the grape. The Rebholz were the pioneers to producing fully fermented dry wines  in the southern Pfalz region. The majority of the 47 acres under vine is planted with Riesling and the Burgundy grapes. The  famous single vineyard sites are “Kastanienbusch” and “Im Sonnenschein”. Due to their purity the wines have an enormous  ageing potential. The Rebholz motto is: “No compromise!” Quoting the Vinum wine guide Germany of 2024\, where the estate  is among the very few being awarded the maximum of 5 stars: “The wines are absolutely captivating\, no compromise would ever leave the cellar\, there is no such thing as less than 100 percent.” Meet Hans Rebholz while he is in town. It will be fascinating to hear directly from the winemaker about his philosophy behind  each of the nine wines we will taste! The Wines: 2019 Riesling Sekt Extra Brut 2023 Muskateller Dry 2023 Riesling Estate Dry 2023 Riesling “vom Rotliegenden”\, Dry 2023 Riesling\, “Kastanienbusch” GG 2023 Pinot Blanc\, Estate 2023 Pinot Blanc\, “Im Sonnenschein” GG 2022 Chardonnay “R” 2019 Pinot Noir “R” There will be bread\, crackers\, and cheese bites to accompany the tasting. Date and Time: .   Thursday\, January 16\, 2025\, 5.00 pm – 7.00 pm.   Registrations for this event are due no later than Friday\, January 10\, 2025.  There is a maximum cap of 60 for this event\, given the supply of wines\, so register early to avoid disappointment. SUMMARY:Riesling vs. Chenin Blanc
DESCRIPTION:Riesling vs. Chenin Blanc: What Are the Differences and Similarities? Please plan to join the German Wine Society on Saturday\, November 9\, 2024 at 7:00 pm for a comparative tasting of German Rieslings and Chenin Blancs from France’s Loire Valley\,  with ten different wines offered to illustrate the similarities and differences of wines using these grapes.  The tasting will be presented by our own Annette Schiller\, who will be bringing some of these wines back from Europe just for us from her most recent tour.  This is our penultimate event of 2024\, before the Holiday Dinner on December 7.  Registrations for this event are due by Tuesday\, November 5\, 2024\, and the price is $45 for GWS members\, $52 for non-members.  Please be aware that\, due to limited supply of the wines\, we have maximum cap of 40 for attendance at this event.  Reserve early to avoid disappointment!   Aficionados of a fresh\, crisp white wine will eventually fall in love with both the Riesling and Chenin Blanc grapes.  Riesling is of course Germany’s most planted and best known grape\, while Chenin Blanc\, though not the leading grape of France\, is one of its white stars.  Chenin Blanc acquired its name from Mont-Chenin in the Touraine district of France in the 15th Century\, but can be traced as far back as Anjou in 845 AD.  There is much to love and little to hate at all about either varietal.  Both varietals can be produced in all sorts of styles: sparkling\, still\, bone dry\, semi-sweet\, fruity sweet\, or lusciously sweet.  In five flights\, one Riesling and one Chenin Blanc each\, we will compare the different styles of the two varietals and will examine the decisive factors: acidity level\, sugar level\, ageability\, versatility\, value\, and terroir expressiveness.   Join us for a fun tasting and find out if you are a Riesling or Chenin Blanc fan or maybe both! The specific wines for our Riesling-Chenin Blanc comparison are still in the process of being selected\, but will be provided to attendees at a later time as soon as they are determined.   A tasty buffet of cheeses\, bread\, crackers\, charcuterie\, grapes and veggies will be provided to accompany the wines. Our tasting will begin at 7 p.m on Saturday\, November 9\, with the doors opening at 6:30 p.m. to admit guests.  The location is the Van Ness Room that we have often used before for membership meetings and other events\, including our New German Wine Law tasting in 2023 and Pinots Tasting earlier this year\, at 3001 Veazey Terrace NW\, Washington\, DC 20008. Whether you are registering by mail or online\, please be sure to provide the names of all persons for whom you are registering\, and pay the appropriate price depending on whether each person is a GWS member (with annual dues paid)\, or a non-member.   You can also become a member or renew\, if your membership is not current\, together with your registration for this event by including an annual $35 dues payment (for an individual or a couple)\, through PayPal\, or by mail using a check\, in the same manner as registering for the event.   If you have been a member of the GWS Capital Chapter in the past but are not sure of your current membership status\, please email the Secretary at the above e-mail to confirm your status.       We are no longer requiring proof of covid-19 vaccination or masking to attend our in-person events\, but do request that if you are experiencing symptoms of covid-19 or other contagious illness\, or have tested positive for such an illness\, you stay home and recover\, and avoid putting other guests at risk.  Refunds can be provided in these circumstances if you notify us before the day of the event\, to allow us time to find another guest to take your place.  Otherwise\, refunds can only be made if you notify us before the deadline for registration. All GWS members and guests are reminded that alcohol consumption can lead to intoxication.   Members and guests should use public transportation to events\, rely on a designated driver\, or taste the wines rather than finish them. If you have questions about this event\, you may contact the event organizer and presenter\, Annette Schiller\, at aschiller@ombiasypr.com \, or by phone at 703-459-7513.  Annette’s website is www.ombiasypr.com . For questions about registration and membership\, please contact Carl Willner\, Capital Chapter President and Secretary\, at  carl.willner1@verizon.net . SUMMARY:ANNOUNCING THE GERMAN WINE SOCIETY’S POTOMAC WINE CRUISE!
DESCRIPTION:Get ready to cast off on the Potomac for a German wine cruise! Yes\, the Capital Chapter of the German Wine Society is once again holding our Potomac wine cruise this summer\, back by popular demand after a series of successful voyages. As we did in July 2021\, 2022\, and 2023\, and also regularly for several years in 2010-2013 and earlier\, we will enjoy the traditional GWS summer wine cruise past the beautiful river banks and monuments of our nation’s Capital. Please join us to taste many wines from Germany and other countries as we cruise along the Potomac for two hours\, from 3 pm to 5 pm on Saturday\, July 20\, 2024. Reservations for this event are due by Monday\, July 15\, 2024\, to give us sufficient time to have enough wine and supplies for all aboard.Parking is readily available in garages along the Georgetown riverfront\, and it is possible to walk from Metro at the Foggy Bottom station as well (if you are a good walker). We will be providing all the wines for this event\, as well as disposable plastic glasses and cutlery\, paper plates and napkins\, and will also bring some deli sandwiches or other snacks. Guests are also encouraged to bring their own favorite cheeses\, breads or other food on board\, but there should be enough food even if you do not choose to do so. This will be a relaxing cruise\, with no presentation\, allowing everyone to concentrate on the wines\, good company and atmosphere. There are many outdoor and indoor dining establishments along the Georgetown waterfront for dinner after the cruise\, which we encourage you to try.The Nightingale is a boat we have used for some previous cruises. It is all on one level\, with tables and chairs\, and a bar area from which we can serve wines (and where you can buy other drinks too if you choose). It also has protection against inclement weather\, though we have been fortunate with most of our past wine cruises (last year we weathered a brief storm) and reasonably hope for a sunny afternoon once again. The cruise will take place rain or shine\, unless weather conditions do not allow the cruise to set out safely\, in which case we will reschedule or provide refunds.THE WINES: The wines for our cruise will be mostly whites but with a few reds. They will be primarily German but with some other international wines included as well. Both dry and sweet wines will be offered\, including many Kabinett and Spätlese prädikat wines! Because this is not a formal presentation\, and we will only have one or two bottles on hand of each of the wines listed\, everyone will not get the same wines\, but all on the voyage should have the chance to savor around 10-12 different wines. We look forward to sharing the lovely qualities of these German and international wines with our members and guests again. Here’s the wine list we have planned (wines are single bottles unless two bottles are noted):German Wines (6 of 13 German wine regions represented)Whites2017 Bollig-Lehnert Piesporter Goldtröpfchen Riesling Mosel2018 Dönnhoff Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Spätlese Nahe2017 Dr. Heyden Silvaner Old Vines Trocken Rheinhessen – two bottles2013 Fitz-Ritter Dürkheimer Gewürztraminer Spätlese Pfalz – two bottles2012 J.J. SUMMARY:Spring Festival Celebration at the German Embassy
DESCRIPTION:ANNOUNCING THE GERMAN WINE SOCIETY’S SPRING FESTIVAL CELEBRATION AT THE GERMAN EMBASSY IN WASHINGTON\, D.C. ON MAY 3\, 2024!        NOTE: This event is FULL. No more reservations are accepted. German Wine Society Members and Friends of German Wine\, It is a pleasure to announce that the German Embassy has invited us once again to hold an event  at the German Embassy House!  And for this event\, our asparagus-themed Spring Festival dinner\, we will also have the opportunity to enjoy once again the cuisine of the German Embassy’s new chef\, Mikko Kosenen of Mikko Nordic Fine Foods. Please join the German Wine Society’s Capital Chapter on the evening of Friday\, May 3\, 2024\, from 5:30 pm to 9:30 pm\, for a four-course asparagus-themed dinner in the German Embassy House\, plus an outdoor reception with served hors d’oeuvres on the Embassy House patio (weather permitting).  Our Spring Festival dinner will feature not only the elegant vegetable in both its green and white versions\, but also fine German wines\, including Silvaner\, known for its affinity with asparagus.  We will have seven whites including two containing Silvaner grapes\, a red\, and a sparkling wine\, representing five of Germany’s wine regions.  It has been a tradition of the German Wine Society to hold Spargelfest dinners at this time of year at various locations\, including the German Embassy House\, Cafe Mozart (now regrettably closed)\, and Cafe Berlin last year.  We look forward to our return to the Embassy where our Society began 47 years ago\, in 1977. Registration for this event must be received by Monday\, April 29\, 2024.    You can register and pay for events in either of two ways.     First\, you can register on our Washington\, D.C. chapter website\, https://germanwinesocietydc.org \, and make payment by PayPal. Here’s what we have planned for our Spring Festival: May 3\, 5:30 pm (entry to Embassy compound passing through security beginning 5:30 pm): Reception and wine dinner at the German Embassy House. DESCRIPTION:Please plan to join the German Wine Society on Saturday\, March 23\, 2024 at 7:00 pm for a presentation on the Pinot grapes of Germany\, and tasting of nine wines to illustrate the varieties using these grapes\, by our own Annette Schiller\, who has brought some of these wines back from Germany just for us.  This is our first in-person event of 2024.  Registrations for this event are closed.  The 13 wine-growing regions are spread across Germany like a picture. Only in these different regions can the different grape varieties find what they need: the right soils and sheltered locations facing the sun.   Germany has been known in the U.S. mostly for its delicious Rieslings. Yes\, Riesling is the #1 grape produced in Germany and Germany is also the #1 producer of Riesling world-wide (40% of the global Riesling production is in Germany). However\, because of Germany’s very different wine regions ranging from 48.5° latitude to 51° latitude\, the Pinot grapes also discovered perfect growing conditions and feel very comfortable in Germany. The monks from Burgundy brought Pinot grapes to Germany as early as the 12th century (and this origin is reflected in the “Burgunder” part of each grape’s German name). Today Germany is the #1 producer of Pinot-Blanc (Weissburgunder)\, #2 producer of Pinot-Gris (Grauburgunder)\, and #3 producer of Pinot-Noir (Spätburgunder) world-wide.   We will take you on a discovery tour through 7 different wine regions (including at least one that is normally impossible to find in the U.S.) and taste 3 Pinot Noir\,  3 Pinot Gris\, and 3 Pinot Blanc wines.  The wines we will enjoy are as follows:                    The Spätburgunders          1)    2018 Blauer Spätburgunder\, Weingut Ziereisen\, Baden         2)    2020 Pinot Noir\, Weingut Kloster Eberbach\, Rheingau         3)    2020 Spätburgunder\, Simonroth\, Weingut Schnaitmann\, Württemberg                     The Grauburgunders         4)    2021 Pinot Gris\, Asselheim\, Weingut Gaul\, Rheinhessen         5)    2021 Grauburgunder\, Schweigen\, Weingut Jülg\, Pfalz         6)    2017 Grauburgunder\, Reserve\, Weingut Hunn\, Baden                     The Weissburgunders         7)    2020 Weissburgunder\, Weingut Wittmann\, Rheinhessen         8)    2021 Weissburgunder\, Weingut Dönnhoff\, Nahe                                 9)    2022 Weissburgunder\, Kloster Heilig Kreuz\, 1.Lage Weingut Schloss Proschwitz\,     Sachsen A tasty buffet of cheeses\, bread\, crackers\, charcuterie\, grapes and veggies will be provided to accompany the wines.   Our tasting will begin at 7 p.m on Saturday\, March 23\, with the doors opening at 6:30 p.m. to admit guests. If you no longer wish to receive our announcements\, please reply to this email to the sender.

SUMMARY:GWS Capital Chapter Membership Zoom Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Prosit Neujahr! Online registration for the 2024 Capital Chapter Membership Meeting is now open! Please make reservations by Monday\, February 12\, 2024.  This year’s Membership Meeting will take place on Saturday\, February 17\, 2024\, starting at 4:00 pm EST\, and planned to last until about 6:30 pm.  As with our last Membership Meeting in February 2023\, the Membership Meeting this year will be held online\, using Zoom.  Though the pandemic is officially over\, viruses still abound during this winter\, and meeting virtually also avoids the risk of having to postpone for inclement weather\, while permitting our members in more distant locations to attend conveniently. Of course\, as this is an online event\, members will supply their own choice of wines\, cheeses and other foods\, and there will be an opportunity to discuss your wine choices with other participants\, as we did during the last Membership Meeting. Members can vote in person at the meeting\, or by returning their written ballots (found at the end of the candidate statements) by February 12\, 2024. Candidate statements and the ballot form (for those who will not be voting in person at the election but would still like to submit a vote) are attached in a separate document\, in the version of this notice sent by e-mail.  Nominations of other candidates than those listed below and on the attached ballot have to be received by no later than Saturday\, February 3\, 2024\, under our By-Laws\, so as to allow revised ballots for the election to be prepared and distributed.  All of the candidates running have already been serving in their positions\, but we have one open Director position without a candidate.  The Chapter President is also running for Chapter Secretary\, in the absence of a separate candidate to fill the Secretary position; he was elected to serve in both capacities for the past four years.   The candidates running for positions on the Board this election are: Carl Willner – for Chapter President and Secretary (positions listed separately on ballot) Christian Schiller – for Chapter Vice President Ken Belsley – for Chapter Treasurer Jim Palanchar – for Director Karen Stokes – for Director\, also serving as Cellarmaster Klaus Teuter – for Director\, also serving as Webmaster   Our By-Laws do not permit nominations from the floor at the meeting for any position for which a candidate is already running\, but only in advance so that ballots for a disputed election can be prepared\, although floor nominations for uncontested positions are allowed.  For this election\, most Board positions except for one Director slot have one candidate running.  You can give back to the Chapter by seeking to join the Board\, or by volunteering to plan or help with a monthly tasting.  Your active participation in planning and managing events helps the organization grow – and to do so in the direction you choose.  All correspondence in response to this email should be directed to our President and Secretary\, Carl Willner\, by email to carl.willner1@verizon.net or by mail at: Carl Willner 1014 Reserve Champion Drive Rockville\, MD 20850   If you are attending as a non-member and need to pay online\, please be sure to have a PayPal account in advance\, as we cannot accept payments by other forms of credit. \nRegister for this\nEvent

Reservations for this event are due by Monday\, July 3\, 2022\, to give us sufficient time to have enough wine and supplies for all aboard.Parking is readily available in garages along the Georgetown riverfront\, and it is possible to walk from Metro at the Foggy Bottom station as well (if you are a good walker). We will be providing all the wines for this event\, as well as disposable plastic glasses and cutlery\, paper plates and napkins\, and will also bring some deli sandwiches or other snacks. Guests are also encouraged to bring their own favorite cheeses\, breads or other food on board. This will be a relaxing cruise\, with no presentation\, allowing everyone to concentrate on the wines\, good company and atmosphere. There are many outdoor and indoor dining establishments along the Georgetown waterfront for dinner after the cruise\, which we encourage you to try.The Nightingale is a boat we have used for some previous cruises\, and is all on one level\, with tables and chairs\, and a bar area from which we can serve wines. It also has protection against inclement weather\, though we have been fortunate with our past wine cruises and reasonably hope for a sunny afternoon once again. The cruise will take place rain or shine\, unless weather conditions do not allow the cruise to set out safely\, in which case we will reschedule or provide refunds.THE WINES: The wines for our cruise will be a mixture of whites and reds\, mostly German but with some other international wines included as well. There will be a good variety of both dry and sweet wines\, including many Kabinett and Spätlese prädikat wines! Here’s the wine list we have planned (wines are single bottles unless two bottles are noted):German Wines (6 of 13 German wine regions represented)Whites2019 A.J. SUMMARY:GWS SPARGELFEST RETURNS!
DESCRIPTION:Dear German Wine Society Members and Guests\,Spring in Washington announces itself with cherry blossoms\, migrating songbirds\, and tasty ramps at farmers’ markets. In Germany\, nothing epitomizes Spring like the revered white stalks of Spargel (aparagus)! The green variety is more popular in North America\, and tends to be available in supermarkets year-round. Germans\, however\, prefer the white variety that is harvested from mid-April to near the end of June (St. John’s Day)\, and often is harder to find in the United States. They’ve given this harvest season its own name — Spargelzeit — and celebrate it with passion.Rich in nutrients and very low in calories\, asparagus has become a culinary status symbol for many Germans. In fact\, Germans consume more white asparagus than their country produces\, so it is necessary to import it.Join the German Wine Society’s Capital Chapter on May 19 for a three-course Spargelfest dinner at Cafe Berlin on Capitol Hill featuring not only the elegant vegetable in both its green and white versions\, but also fine German wines\, including Silvaner\, known for its affinity with asparagus. We have two such Silvaner wines\, from Franken\, bottled in the traditional\, picturesque squat bocksbeutel\, in addition to a sparkling wine\, two other dry whites and two sweet whites. This is the first time in four years that we have been able to celebrate a Spargelfest together\, with past locations having included the German Embassy House\, Cafe Mozart (now regrettably closed)\, and Cafe Berlin itself. We look forward to our return to this elegant locale recalling the atmosphere of 1920s Berlin.DATE: Friday\, May 19th\, 2023. Doors open at 6:30 pm; tasting begins at 7:00 pm. Registrations are due by Monday\, May 15\, 2023. This is expected to be a very popular event\, and seating is limited to the first 40 who reserve\, so reserve early to avoid disappointment. In order to give a wider chance to attend to our members\, we are limiting reservations to groups of no more than four. If you have other friends who want to come\, please encourage them to reserve separately.VENUE: Cafe Berlin\, 322 Massachusetts Ave. NE\, Washington\, DC . On-street parking nearby is very limited. The parking garage at Union Station can be entered from the bridge on H St. NE east of North Capitol Street. The Metrorail Red Line serves Union Station\, as do many Metrobus lines. SUMMARY:New Vintage Tasting
DESCRIPTION:GWS New Vintage Tasting with Phil Bernstein Dear German Wine Society Members and Guests\, Every year we host a tasting to try German wines from the new vintage\, with a focus on Riesling. Our host is Phil Bernstein\, General Manager of MacArthur Beverages\, one of the leading retailers of German Riesling in the country. Every year\, Phil brings some of the best wines of the vintage and this year will be no exception. The new vintage is 2021\, the fourth in a string of very good to great vintages\, with a difference. The wines tend to be lighter\, fresher\, and more intense than the previous three vintages. A number of critics describe them as some of the best German wines they have ever tasted. The vintage did not produce a lot of wine so this may be your only opportunity to try some of them\, including a flight dedicated to the very special and recently deceased Daniel Vollenweider. DATE: Friday\, April 14th\, 2023. Doors open at 6:30 pm; tasting begins at 7:00 pm. Registrations are due by Monday\, April 10\, 2023. VENUE: King Farm Community Center\, 300 Saddle Ridge Circle\, Rockville\, MD 20850\, in the King Farm development\, which we last used for our September 2021 New Vintage Tasting. This is a large\, free-standing building in the middle of a circle\, with high ceilings\, a fireplace\, kitchen with refrigerator for wine chilling\, and French doors and a balcony overlooking a pool area (the balcony will not\, however\, be open during the event). It can accommodate up to 100 people\, but we are limiting capacity to 70 to fit everyone comfortably. Please park in the lot behind the swimming pool adjacent to the community center\, and then come around to the front of the circle (not through the pool area) to enter the building. You can reach King Farm easily when driving either off Exit 8 from I-270 (turn into King Farm using the Redland Boulevard turnoff on the right from the exit)\, or from MD 355 exiting onto Redland Boulevard into King Farm. The Shady Grove Metro station on the Red Line is the most convenient to King Farm\, right across 355\, and there are normally shuttles running from Shady Grove into King Farm until just after 7:00 pm – the Red shuttle goes to the Community Center. SUMMARY:The New 2021 Wine Law in Germany:  Tasting Our Way Through the Classification System - March 11\, 2023
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT IS NOW FULLY SUBSCRIBED.  Please plan to join the German Wine Society on Saturday\, March 11\, 2023 at 7:00 pm for a presentation on the new German wine law and classification system\, and tasting of wines to illustrate the new system\, by our own Annette Schiller\, who has brought some of these wines back from Germany just for us.  This is our first in-person event of 2023\, and just the way to bring our knowledge of German wines up to date for all the events to come.  Registrations for this event are due by Tuesday\, March 7\, 2023\, and the price is $50 for GWS members\, $57 for non-members.  Please be aware that\, due to limited supply of some of the wines\, we have a maximum cap of 40 for attendance at this event.  Reserve early to avoid disappointment! Did you ever complain about the difficulty in understanding the label of a bottle of German wine? Those days are finally over\, since on November 26\, 2020\, the German parliament passed a new German wine law\, which took effect January 27\, 2021.  The most important point of the new wine law is that a new hierarchy to determine the quality of the wine was introduced. The emphasis shifted from the sugar level of grapes at point of harvest as quality measure to the wine’s geographic origin and how narrowly it is defined. The bottom line is: the narrower the origin\, the higher the quality. This concept follows the “terroir” principle\, well-known from the classification in Burgundy and elsewhere.  We will explore the quality levels by tasting several wines moving up in the quality pyramid as well as tasting the same wine within the same quality levels in the dry and sweet versions.    The list of wines for this event\, presented below organized by categories in the new wine law\, includes wines of various quality levels up to and including GG as well as sweeter Pradikat wines.   A tasty buffet of cheeses\, bread\, crackers\, charcuterie\, grapes and veggies will be provided to accompany the wines. SUMMARY:German Wine Society Membership Zoom Meeting - Saturday\, February 18th\, 2023
DESCRIPTION:Prosit Neujahr! Online registration for the 2023 Capital Chapter Membership Meeting is now open! Please make reservations by Monday\, February 13\, 2023.  This year’s Membership Meeting will take place on Saturday\, February 18\, 2023\, starting at 4:00 pm EST\, and is planned to last until about 6:30 pm.  As with our last Membership Meeting in February 2022\, the Membership Meeting this year will be held online\, using Zoom. The meeting’s start time at 4:00 pm EST allows members who may be in Europe also to participate. Of course\, as this is an online event\, members will supply their own choice of wines\, cheeses and other foods\, and there will be an opportunity to discuss your wine choices with other participants\, as we did during the last Membership Meeting.  Members pay nothing for this event (but still need to register via our website or mail\, or by email to the Secretary\, so that we can have an accurate count of who is coming and can send the Zoom link to everyone); non-members pay $10 each\, through website registration using PayPal or by check.  Only members can participate in the election\, but non-members have the same opportunity as members to join in the rest of the meeting and win prizes in the wine quiz. Please contact the Secretary if you are not sure whether you are current. Members can vote in person at the meeting\, or by returning their written ballots (found at the end of the attached candidate statements) by February 13\, 2023. Candidate statements and the ballot form (for those who will not be voting in person at the election but would still like to submit a vote) are attached to this notice in a separate document.  Nominations of other candidates than those listed below and on the attached ballot have to be received by no later than Saturday\, February 4\, 2023\, under our By-Laws\, so as to allow revised ballots for the election to be prepared and distributed.  All of the candidates running have already been serving in their positions\, but we have one open Director position without a candidate.  In addition\, our Webmaster Maria So is stepping down from her position after several years of devoted service\, and so we are greatly in need of a candidate to serve as Director and Webmaster; if you would like more information on what this involves\, please contact the Secretary and we can arrange a discussion with Maria. The position does not require a high level of computer expertise\, but a reasonable level of comfort with using computers to post event notices and photos\, do plug-in updates to the website\, and be alert to any problems that arise (which we can get professional help to fix).    The Chapter President is also running for Chapter Secretary\, in the absence of a separate candidate to fill the Secretary position; he was elected to serve in both capacities for the past three years.   The candidates running for positions on the Board this election are: Carl Willner – for Chapter President and Secretary (positions listed separately on ballot)Christian Schiller – for Chapter Vice PresidentKen Belsley – for Chapter TreasurerJim Palanchar – for DirectorKaren Stokes – for Director\, also serving as CellarmasterOur By-Laws do not permit nominations from the floor at the meeting for any position for which a candidate is already running\, but only in advance so that ballots for a disputed election can be prepared\, although floor nominations for uncontested positions are allowed.  For this election\, most Board positions except for two Director slots\, one of which is also the Webmaster\, have one candidate running.  You can give back to the Chapter by seeking to join the Board\, or by volunteering to plan or help with a monthly tasting.  Your active participation in planning and managing events helps the organization grow – and to do so in the direction you choose.  All correspondence in response to this email should be directed to our President and Secretary\, Carl Willner\, by email to carl.willner1@verizon.net or by mail at: Carl Willner1014 Reserve Champion DriveRockville\, MD 20850Register for this Event click here If you are attending as a non-member and need to pay online\, please be sure to have a PayPal account in advance\, as we cannot accept payments by other forms of credit.  If you decide to register by mail\, please mail your registration (and check if registering as a non-member) to the Chapter Secretary\, Carl Willner\, whose address is listed above. If you no longer wish to receive our announcements\, please reply to this email to the sender.  Carl WillnerPresident and Secretary\, German Wine Society Capital Chapter  ___________________________________________________________________________________Please clip and return this registration form if registering by mail\, to the Secretary at the address listed above.  Do not return the entire event notice.   If you are voting by mail rather than by participating in the online meeting\, please also clip the ballot form from the Candidate Statement attached to the version of this notice sent by email to members\, and return that to the Secretary. Reservation Form for GERMAN WINE SOCIETY CAPITAL CHAPTER MEMBERSHIP MEETING\, SATURDAY\, FEBRUARY 18\, 2023 Name(s) _______________________________________________________________ Member or non-Member __________________________________________________ Payment submitted _______________________________________________________ E-mail contact ____________________________________________________________ Telephone contact _________________________________________________________

SUMMARY:German Wine Society Sparkling Wine Tasting\, November 5th\, 2022
DESCRIPTION:All sorts of Sparklers: How do the Bubbles get into that Bottle? With the holidays nearly here\, please plan to join the German Wine Society on Saturday\, November 5\, 2022 for a presentation and tasting of sparkling wines by our own Annette Schiller\, who has brought some of these wines back from Germany just for us.   What a way to start setting a festive mood\, and get some ideas for holiday tables!   Registrations for this event are due by November 1\, 2022\, and the price is $55 for GWS members\, $62 for non-members.   Germany has a long history of producing sparkling wine – called Sekt in Germany – starting in the early 19th century. The fascination with sparkling wine let trade and the exchange of knowledge with France boom. At some point in the later 19th century it was the Germans who controlled the Champagne business in France.   Today Germany is world champion in sparkling wine consumption. In 2021 Germans drank 274 million liters of sparkling wine (Statistisches Bundesamt) and produced 250 million liters (Statista.com). The bulk of production comes from big brands like Henkell or Rotkäppchen\, who make Sekt with the tank method. However\, premium sparkling wine production is on the rise. Many German Sekts made in the Méthode Champenoise are on eye level with the best of French Champagnes. It can be confusing to see all the different labels of bubbles with prices vacillating between just a few dollars per bottle for a mass-produced sparkler to close to a hundred. There is Champagne\, Cava\, Crémant\, Prosecco\, Frizzante\, Sekt\, Winzersekt\, Secco\, Pet-Nat\, to name just a few. But they all have one thing in common: they have significant levels of carbon dioxide in the bottle to make them fizzy. However\, there are different procedures to get the fizz into the bottle. We will taste 12 sparkling wines and will evaluate the difference in the various methods of how the CO2 gets into the bottle.   Half of our sparkers are from German regions\, and the other half from various other countries as listed\, including Austria\, France\, Italy\, and the U.S.             1)    Secco\, Hillinger\, Burgenland\, Austria               2)    Prosecco\, Bisol\, Italy             3)    Dr. L\, Mosel              4)    Pet-Nat\, Melsheimer\, Mosel              5)    Pet-Nat\, Tscherne 18-Pet Pink\, Steiermark\, Austria               6)    Korbel\, California               7)    Steininger\, Grüner Veltliner Sekt\, Brut Nature\, Kamptal\, Austria              8)    Peter Jakob Kühn\, Riesling Sekt\, Brut\, Rheingau                9)    Jülg\, Crément Brut\, Pfalz                       10)   Griesel\, Chardonnay Brut Nature\, Hessische Bergstraße           11)   Domaine Carneros by Taittinger\, Napa Valley             12)   Taittinger Brut La Française\, France  A tasty buffet of cheeses\, bread\, crackers\, charcuterie\, grapes and veggies will be provided to accompany the bubbly wines. Our tasting will begin at 7 p.m on Saturday\, November 5\, with the doors opening at 6:30 p.m. to admit guests.  The location is the Van Ness Room that we have often used before for membership meetings and other events\, at 3001 Veazey Terrace NW\, Washington\, DC 20008. First\, you can register below\, and make payment by PayPal.  (The event registration is closed.) Register for this Event click here You will need to create a GWS account for the website if you do not already have one\, and you will also need to have a PayPal account\, as we cannot accept payment by other forms of credit or online transfer. For the health and safety of all members and guests\, those attending this event are required to show proof of vaccination against covid-19.  This may be done in advance by sending an e-mail to the GWS Capital Chapter Secretary with a legible photo image of a vaccination card\, or by producing a vaccination card at the event either physically or by a legible photo image at the time of signing in at the event.  The GWS Capital Chapter has consistently followed this policy at our in-person events since resuming those events in the summer of 2021\, and due to concern for our members and friends\, we are maintaining that policy for this event as well.  Guests who fail to provide proof of vaccination will not be admitted.  Masks will not be necessary.  All GWS members and guests are reminded that alcohol consumption can lead to intoxication.   Members and guests should use public transportation to events\, rely on a designated driver\, or taste the wines rather than finish them. If you have questions about this event\, you may contact the event organizer and presenter\, Annette Schiller\, at aschiller@ombiasypr.com  .   For questions about registration and membership\, please contact Carl Willner\, Capital Chapter President and Secretary\, at  carl.willner1@verizon.net . If you no longer wish to receive our announcements\, please reply to this email to the sender. If registering by mail\, please fill out and cut the reservation form below with your check – do not mail the entire notice.
