SUMMARY:Oktoberfest Tasting
DESCRIPTION:Please join us on Friday\, October 10\, at 7:30 p.m.\, for our Oktoberfest tasting at the Harbour Square Club Room\, which provides us a stunning view of the Washington skyline. The price for this tasting is $35 for members\, $42 for guests. In past years for our Oktoberfests\, we virtually visited most of the wine regions of Germany: the Rheingau\, Rheinhessen\, Pfalz\, Mosel\, Salle-Unstrut\, Franken\, Hessische Bergstrasse\, Baden\, Wuerttemberg\, Ahr\, and Nahe (only the Mittelrhein and Sachsen are missing from our tours). This year\, our Oktoberfest is going international\, with a wine tour along a famous river valley and wine-growing region that traverses Germany\, Luxembourg and France – the Mosel/Moselle. Our tour provides an opportunity to experience both wines from our cellar and newly acquired ones from local retailers\, along with snacks\, representing the three countries along the Mosel/Moselle. As with years past\, your pourers (board members) have undertaken considerable research to ensure that your experience is both delicious and educational. The French portion of the Moselle is an old wine-growing region in Lorraine\, and now has its own wine appellation\, AOC Moselle\, but with the smallest production by far of the three countries lining the river\, only a couple of hundred hectares at most. Wine growing in this area was formerly much more extensive than today\, but suffered from Phylloxerra\, World War I\, and industrialization\, and at one point almost died out\, but has been recovering in recent decades. But because the production is still small\, we are supplementing the French portion of our tour with some Riesling wines from well-known producers in neighboring Alsace as well as from the Moselle proper (where very little Riesling is grown\, with the principal grapes allowed in the AOC being Auxerrois\, Elbing\, Muller-Thurgau\, Gamay\, Pinot Blanc\, Pinot Gris\, and Pinot Noir\, and there is also a little Gewürztraminer). Our wines from the French Moselle and Alsace will include:  -Chateau de Vaux Les Hautes-Bassieres\, Pinot Noir\, AOC Moselle (2012) – the only red wine on our tour  -Chateau de Vaux Les Gryphees\, AOC Moselle (2013) – a white wine blend   -Dirler Grand Cru Saering\, Riesling\, AOC Alsace (2008)  -Domaine Weinbach\, Cuvee Ste. Catherine\, Riesling\, AOC Alsace (2012)Next we come to the Moselle region in Luxembourg whose wines we have already been fortunate to enjoy in two tastings at the Luxembourg Embassy in Washington. Any members who have not attended those spectacular events should be sure to experience the wines of Luxembourg now\, while our cellar supply lasts – Luxembourg wines are rarely exported to the U.S.\, as the production is only about 1200 hectares in a single wine region\, the Moselle Luxembourgoise\, and most of that is consumed domestically. But there is a wide variety of grapes\, producing primarily white wines\, including Riesling\, Auxerrois\, Pinot Gris\, Gewürztraminer and others. Here\, we will experience the following wines:  -Bernard-Massard Clos des Rochers\, Grand Premier Cru\, Riesling (2007)  -Bernard-Massard Clos des Rochers\, Grand Premier Cru\, Auxerrois (2009)  -Bernard-Massard Clos des Rochers\, Grand Premier Cru\, Pinos Gris (2008)  -and one dessert wine for each – either -Guy Krier-Welbes Ellange-Gare Bech-Klien Nau\, Vendange Tardive\, Riesling (2010) or -Guy Krier-Welbes Ellange-Gare Bech-Klien Nau\, Vendange Tardive\, Gewurztraminer (2009)Finally\, we come to the magnificence of the German Mosel\, also primarily a white wine region\, with the share of Rieslings here rising to over 50%. The wine production here dwarfs the other two countries on the Moselle\, with over 12\,800 hectares cultivated in the German Mosel. Though the Mosel is Germany’s third largest wine region in terms of area and production\, it is often considered to rank highest in the quality of its vineyards\, especially those in the Middle Mosel. The Upper Mosel (Obermosel) is more like Luxembourg\, with less steep hills and around 800 hectares cultivated\, while the most famed Mosel wines are commonly encountered on the steep-sided slate hillsides in the Middle and Lower Mosel. From the German Mosel\, we will experience:  -Dr. Thanisch\, Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr\, Spatlese\, Riesling\, Middle Mosel (2009)  -Bollig Lehnert\, Piersporter Goldtropfchen\, Spatlese\, Riesling\, Middle Mosel (2004)  -Meulenhof\, Erdener Treppchen\, Spatlese\, Riesling\, Middle Mosel (1996)   -Staatsdomaene\, Trierer St. Maximiner Kreuzberg\, Auslese\, Riesling\, Upper Mosel (1990) The address for our tasting is 500 N Street SW\, Washington\, DC\, 20024. It is very easy to get to and park there. Just be sure to factor in the horrendous bridge traffic\, if coming in from outside Washington. We have reserved a few spaces in the Harbour Square complex’s visitor parking area\, but we cannot guarantee that parking will be available. Metro is very accessible\, the Green Line\, Waterfront-SEU\, www.wmata.com.   The deadline for reservations is Saturday\, October 4. Please send your check ($35 for members\, $42 for guests) with your reservation to ensure your seat is reserved for you. [We are exploring creating an electronic payment and reservation alternative in connection with a new chapter website we are developing\, and if that is ready in time for this tasting\, members will be notified.]Also\, if you have not paid your annual dues yet (July 1\, 2014 to June 30\, 2015)\, please include $35 with your check (single or couple membership). All Society members and guests are reminded that alcohol consumption can lead to intoxication\, and therefore Society members and their guests are expected to drink in moderation at Society events. It is advisable to provide designated drivers or other modes of transit where available\, or mostly to taste rather than consume alcohol when such drivers or alternative means of transportation are not available.

SUMMARY:Holiday Dinner at Rasika in the West End
DESCRIPTION:खुश छुट्टियाँ That is “Happy Holidays” in Hindi\, I think\, which is pertinent\, because …This year the dinner will be at Rasika in the West End\, Friday\, December 6\, 2013\, starting at 7 p.m.  The address is 1190 New Hampshire Avenue\, NW Washington\, DC 20037.The venue is stunning.  We plan to be in a private room\, the Library.  The menu showcases such modern Indian cuisine as Tawa (Griddle)\, Sigri (open Barbeque)\, Tandoori and regional dishes.  Naturally\, this served dinner will be paired with fabulous German wines selected specifically for the dishes themselves.  Among the wines Rasika serves several come from  vintners the club favors\, such as Müller-Catoir\, Leitz\, Doennhoff\, and Erben.  All the more reason to come to this event! We are planning an extensive menu comprising a variety of dishes\, and here is just a hint of what we have selected:Starter of Palak Chaat (crispy baby spinach\, sweet yogurt\, tamarind\, date chutney)Entree of Tandoori Tamatar Salmon (Scottish salmon\, sun-dried tomato\, basil\, mint chutney) and Chicken Tikka Masala (the national dish of England!)Dessert of Cardamom Ice Cream (which is absolutely delicious!)A subsequent announcement containing the full menu and paired wines will be forthcoming.

SUMMARY:Luxembourg Wine Tasting
DESCRIPTION:We have been invited to return to the beautiful Embassy of Luxembourg on Friday\, October 25\, 2013 at 7 p.m. for another exciting opportunity to enjoy the wines of the “other Mosel\,” the Moselle River in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Those who attended our last tasting at the Luxembourg Embassy in March 2011 will recall what a wonderful evening it was\, and this event promises to be even more spectacular\, with about twice as many wines — we had seven last time — and expect over a dozen to be available this time. Some of the dry and sparkling wine varieties will be familiar from the last tasting\, but this time we will also have many of the sweeter “specialty wines” of Luxembourg\, including the vendange tardive (late harvest)\, vin moelleux (mellow wine)\, vin de glace (ice wine)\, and vin de paille (straw wine). This is truly a unique tasting opportunity\, as Luxembourg’s specialty wines are produced in very small quantities and are not normally available in the United States — we have them thanks to the assistance of our Embassy contacts.Ambassador of Luxembourg Jean-Louis Wolzfeld will deliver some opening remarks on the history of wine-making in Luxembourg\, its wine region and the types of wines. In addition\, Ambassador Wolzfeld is choosing several special wines from his Embassy’s cellar that we will be able to taste in comparison with the Luxembourg wines that are now in our Society Cellar. Light refreshments will be served during the tasting.

SUMMARY:Oktoberfest "Reverse" Tasting
DESCRIPTION:Please join us Saturday\, September 21\, at 7 p.m. for our tasting at the Harbour Square Club Room\, which provides us a stunning view of the Washington skyline. The price for this tasting is $25 for members\, $32 for guests.  In years past\, we (virtually) visited the Rheingau\, Rheinhessen\, Pfalz\, and Mosel to celebrate and learn more about these regions’ fine wines. This year we visit some of our lesser well known regions. It is an opportunity to experience wines from our cellar and local retailers along with snacks representing these regions. As with years past\, your pourers (board members) have undertaken considerable research to ensure your experience is both delicious and delectable. Here are a couple of articles to tickle your tongues (best to read them in the order listed):Wines of the Times: Germany’s Rieslings on the Tip of the Tongue\, by Eric Asimovwww.nytimes.com/2013/08/28/dining/reviews/germanys-rieslings-on-the-tip-of-the-tongue.htmlOn the Riesling Road: Day 5 – Dry Fear and Loathing on the Rhine for Theise and Co.?www.stuartpigott.de/?p=3855We have selected the specific wines we’ll be sampling. SUMMARY:German Dry Rieslings!
DESCRIPTION:Riesling in general and dry Riesling in particular is not really trendy in the U.S. Yet Eric Asimov\, the New York Times´ wine critic\, recently detected a “rising popularity of Riesling.” which\, to him\, signaled “the increasing sophistication of Americans who have fallen in love with wine.”Our April tasting will put our love for German wines to the stellar test of dry Riesling. Gunther Hellmann has offered to do a tasting of exclusively dry Riesling. He is a wine aficionado\, visiting Washington DC for a few months and has participated in two of our recent tastings. He will share his take at and love for German wine\, in particular dry Riesling\, with us.Gunther Hellmann was so kind  as to bring a selection of wines from his cellar inGermany for this tasting\, which we will complement with additions from local stores. The selection consists of  dry Rieslings from the Mosel\, the up and coming Pfalz and Rheinhessen regions and the Nahe Valley. The tasting will include “Grosses Gewaechs/Grand Cru” wines from world-class Riesling producers Weingut Klaus Peter Keller in Rheinhessen and Weingut Hermann Doennhoff in the Nahe Valley. Overall\, we will get a very good overview of what German winemakers are able to produce when it comes to other than sweet-style wines. The tasting will be on Friday\, April 19\, at 7 p.m. The price is $35 for members and $42 for non-members.The wines we will be serving (listed here in alphabetical order) are:2009 Bassermann-Jordan\, Auf der Mauer\, Pfalz2011 Dönnhoff\, Riesling trocken\, Nahe2010 Dönnhoff\, Hermannshöhle\, Grosses Gewächs\, Nahe2011 Fogt\, Spätlese trocken\, Siefersheimer Goldenes Horn\, Rheinhessen2011 Franzen\, Riesling trocken\, “Der Sommer war sehr groß”\, Mosel2007 Heymann-Löwenstein\, Schieferterrassen\, Mosel2006 Keller\, Hubacker\, Großes Gewächs\, Rheinhessen2008 Koehler-Ruprecht\, Saumagen\, Kabinett trocken\, Pfalz2009 Seehof\, Westhofener Steingrube\, Rheinhessen2011 Wagner-Stempel\, Siefersheimer Riesling trocken\, Vom Porphyr\, Rheinhessen

SUMMARY:Rapturous Reds Redux
DESCRIPTION:Join us Friday\, February 22\, at 7 p.m.\, as we experience “Rapturous Reds Redux” as presented by our own Michael Fritze\, who has spent his time meticulously researching candidates for this tasting.  The price for this tasting is $35 for members and $42 for non-members.   It will be held at the Harbour Square Club Room.We are happy to present a reprise of last year’s popular German red wine tasting.  Although Germany is rightfully known for world-class white wines\, a revolution is taking place in German red wine quality.  This is due to a combination of improved winemaking practices and the effects of global warming.  Together with the traditional red wine regions of the Ahr\, Wűrttemberg\, Baden and Rheingau (Assmannshausen)\, a new generation of ambitious vintners is realizing extraordinary quality improvements in German red wine.  Mike Fritze has again thoroughly researched both existing and new red wine vintners and developed a tasting menu that should satisfy everyone’s curiosity about German red wines.  This tasting will feature prominent German red wine producers from the Pfalz\, Rheinhessen\, Baden\, Ahr\, and Rheingau. Varietals featured include Spaetburgunder (Pinot Noir)\, Dornfelder\, Trollinger and Lemberger. The wines we will taste:N.V. Wűrttembergische Weingärtner (WZG) Trollinger QbA\, Wűrttemberg (Möglingen)2008 Schnaitmann Lemberger Württemberg Trocken Wűrttemberg (Fellbach)2009 Villa Wolf Pinot Noir  Pfalz (Wachenheim)2009 Becker Pinot Noir Pfalz (Schweigen)2009 Knipser Blauer Spätburgunder Trocken Pfalz (Laumersheim)2008 August Kessler Spätburgunder Rheingau (Assmanshausen)2008 Bernhard Huber Pinot Noir Baden (Malterdingen im Breisgau)2011 Meyer-Näkel “Blauschiefer” Pinot Noir Ahr (Dernau)2009 Schneider Dornfelder Trocken Rheinhessen (Nierstein)2007 Knipser “Gaudenz” Pfalz (Laumersheim)

SUMMARY:Annual Membership Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Prosit Neujahr! You are cordially invited to attend this year’s membership meeting on Friday\, February 1\, at 7 p.m. There will be some very good wines from the cellar to drink with our — by now traditional — quiz game and cheeses and bread to go with the wines. There will also be short reports on how we arrive at prices for a tasting and the report on the chapter’s finances\, membership\, etc.It is at this annual meeting we elect new officers. We are anticipating vacancies on the board this coming year\, including the possibility that our current president plans to step aside\, into the emeritus position.  This election is critical to the future of the society and your vote counts!!  We should take advantage of this opportunity to introduce fresh thinking into guiding the evolution of the society and planning future events.  Please consider giving back to the Chapter by serving on the board or by volunteering to plan a monthly tasting.  It is very important that you come and vote at this meeting — it is your chapter and you can help shape its activities by voting.  The wines we will be tasting are a spectacular vertical tasting through which we will impart an appreciation of how our favorite wines will age. 2001 Donnhoff Norheimer Kirschheck Spatlese\, Nahe2011 Donnhoff Norheimer Kirschheck Spatlese\, Nahe2003 Donnhoff Oberhauser Brucke Spatlese\, Nahe2011 Donnhoff Oberhauser Brucke Spatlese\, Nahe1998 Kruger Rumpf Munsterer Dautenpflanzer Spatlese\, Nahe2011 Kruger Rumpf Munsterer Dautenpflanzer Spatlese\, Nahe1999 JJ Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spatlese\, MSR2011 JJ Prum Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spatlese\, MSR

SUMMARY:Summer Solstice Potomac River Cruise
DESCRIPTION:We will be casting off all lines and getting underway from Georgetown Harbor\, just at the bottom of 31st Street NW at 7:15 PM June 24\, aboard the Nightingale.  We will have a few cheeses and fruits to complement our excellent cellar wines. This will be a relaxing\, post-dinner cruise so we can concentrate on the wines and the atmosphere.  There are many dining establishments in the Georgetown area\, several right in the Georgetown Harbor area\, and we encourage all who want to take the cruise to dine there beforehand.  The boat\, the Nightingale\, is the same boat we used the last several years and it is the perfect size for our group. It is all on one level\, and we have tables and chairs and a bar from which to serve the wine.  It also has protection against inclement weather\, which of course will not occur.So\, please join us for this pleasant summer evening on the river.

SUMMARY:New Vintage Tasting with Phil Bernstein
DESCRIPTION:Every year we host a tasting to provide members and guests with an early opportunity to taste wines from the new vintage.  The 2010 wines are just arriving\, and now is a great time to sample what is available so you can decide what to buy based on the most important information– what tastes good to you!The tasting will be Friday\, February 17\, at 7 p.m. The price is $35 for members and $42 for non-members.2010 was an extremely unusual vintage in Germany\, with some of the lowest yields in the past 100 years. In his recent report\, David Schildknecht writes that some of the 2010 wines are frightful and many others are mind-bendingly complex. In the words of Terry Theise\, what’s good in 2010 is absurdly good\, and what’s not good is a mess. His candidate motto for the 2010 vintage is: WTF!!We are fortunate that DC boasts one of the best German wine retailers in the country\, Phil Bernstein of MacArthur Beverages\, who will pick some of the good stuff for us. Phil will present some value wines\, some wonderful wines\, and some new wines. The wines we will be serving are:2010 Dr L Riesling Qba2010 St Urbans Hof Riesling Qba2010 Donnhoff Kreuznacher Krotenpfuhl Riesling Kabinett2010 Donnhoff Oberhauser Leistenberg Riesling Kabinett2010 A.J. SUMMARY:Rieslings 'round the World
DESCRIPTION:Mark your calendar now for our “Rieslings ’round the World” Riesling Blind Tasting\, led by our own Carl Brandhorst.  The evening’s tasting takes place in the Harbour Square Club Room. The address for our tasting is 500 N St SW\, Washington\, DC. 20024-4605. Parking is available on the street and in the complex on a first-come-first-served basis. The date is Friday\, November 4th\, starting at 7:30 PM.  The price will be $35 for members and $42 for non-members. At this tasting\, the German Wine Society will present a blind tasting of Rieslings from several countries around the world.  There will be ten wines in two flights\, five wines to a flight.  There will be one German wine to satisfy those thinking that only German Rieslings are worth drinking.  In each flight\, five wines will be poured for comparative tasting.   During the break between the flights\, light hors d’oeuvres will be served. Only crackers and water will be available during the flights.. The session will be limited to 36 participants because the available wine is limited. After each flight participants will receive a list of the wines tasted. During the flights\, sheets containing the modified Davis Scale\, normally used in national wine judging events\, will be provided so that participants can record their impressions based upon color\, aroma\, taste\, finish and hedonistic impression. The purpose of this educational tasting is to show that excellent Rieslings are produced in countries other than Germany\, and for each participant to determine which of the wines he or she prefers.  In selecting the Rieslings for this presentation\, the presenter tasted many Rieslings generally available in the Washington metropolitan area to see which ones met his criteria.  The criteria will be stated at the beginning of the presentation. The deadline is Friday\, October 31st.  Please send your reservation ASAP\, so we can finalize planning. We are united in our love for German wines.  But the Riesling grape grows in many places and makes excellent wine outside of Germany. This is not an exercise to pick out the German wine\, but to show the variation that the Riesling grape exhibits and to see if you like some of these different styles.

SUMMARY:Rapturous Reds
DESCRIPTION:Join us Friday\, October 14\, at 7 p.m.\, as we experience “Rapturous Reds” as presented by our own Michael Fritze\, who has spent his summer meticulously researching candidates for this tasting. The winemakers represented at this tasting are part of the  red wine revolution currently underway in Germany.  German red wines tend to be not like the fruity red wines we know from warmer countries.  Rather\, they show as lean and more elegant\, with a lot of finesse.30 years ago\, in the international scene\, people would not talk about German red wine.  This has changed\, and rightly so.  Germany now produces red wines that compete with the best of the world.  The share of red wines in terms of production has increased from 10 percent in the 1980s to about 35 percent now in Germany. The wines we will taste:TROLLINGER:  This very old red variety probably originated in\, and derives its name from\, Tirol\, where it is known as Schiava (Italy) and Vernatsch (Austria).  A large yielder that ripens very late\, it produces fragrant\, fruity\, light wines with a pronounced acidity.*NV Winzergenossenschaft Württemberg\,  TrollingerSPÄTBURGUNDER:  In Germany\, the Spätburgunder is to red wine what the Riesling is to white wine: the cream of the crop.  In fact\, Germany is the world’s third largest producer of Pinot Noir. The German name for the grape is Spätburgunder – late (spät) ripening pinot (burgunder).*2008 August Kessler Spätburgunder Qualitätswein Trocken\, Rheingau (Assmanshausen)2010 Vier Jahreszeiten Pinot Noir Qualitätswein\, Pfalz (Bad Dürkheim)2008 Meyer-Näkel Blauschiefer (Blue Slate) Pinot Noir Qualitätswein Trocken\, Ahr2008 Knipser Blauer Spätburgunder Trocken\, Pfalz (Laumersheim)2008 Becker Estate Pinot Noir Qualitätswein\, Pfalz (Schweigen)2008 Villa Wolf Pinot Noir\, Pfalz (Ernst Loosen owned)DORNFELDER:  Among new varieties\, the Dornfelder shows great promise.  A prolific\, relatively early ripener\, it produces wine far deeper in color than is typical of German reds.*  Additionally\, Dornfelder produces wines heavier and noticeably more tannic than spätburgunder.2009 Windsong VA Dornfelder2008 Georg Albrecht Schneider Dornfelder Qualitaetswein Trocken\, Rheinhessen (Nierstein)2007 Weingut Binz Dornfelder Trocken\, Rheinhessen (Nackenheim)2008 Weingut Walter Merk Dornfelder Trocken\, Pfalz* This information is cited from the German Wine Institute\, www.germanwines.de

SUMMARY:Lindsay Morriss and George Albrecht Schneider Wines Tasting
DESCRIPTION:Join us Friday\, September 16\, at 7 p.m.\, as we taste the wines from the renowned Weingut George Albrecht Schneider as presented by German wine expert Lindsay Morriss.Lindsay Morriss joins us this evening from Rhode Island.  Lindsay is an expert when it comes to German wine.  She graduated in 2010 with a MBA degree in Wine Marketing & Management from the French Business School INSEEC Bordeaux.  The topic of her MBA thesis was: “Raising the Profile of German Wines in the U.S. Market.”  Lindsay argues that Germany should place more emphasis on promoting other grape varieties outside of Riesling when marketing its wines in the U.S.\, such as its abundant red grapes and white Pinots (Pinot Blanc and Pinot Gris).  As part of her studies\, Lindsay interned last fall at Weingut Georg Albrecht Schneider.  She probably knows this winery and its wines better than anyone else in the U.S.Weingut Georg Albrecht Schneider has been exporting wine for over 30 years and is no stranger to the German wine scene in the U.S. Today\, about half its total production is exported\, of which 70% goes to the U.S. and the remainder to Japan.  The estate cultivates 37 acres of premium vineyards situated along the Rhine River that are planted with over ten grape varieties (52% Riesling; 17% Müller-Thurgau; 8% Silvaner; 8% Pinot Gris/Blanc; 8% red wine varieties; 7% other).  You may have already met Ulrike Schneider in Washington D.C.\, where she regularly comes once or twice a year to present her family’s wines.  With vineyards situated on Nierstein’s acclaimed  “red slope\,” Georg Albrecht Schneider counts as one  of Germany’s leading winemaking estates. Our Board member Christian Schiller\, who had met Lindsay at Weingut Georg Albrecht Schneider while she was interning there\, recently revisited the winery and took some pictures that he will present during the tasting. Check out Christian Schiller’s excellent recap on our event!

SUMMARY:Portfolio Tasting with Domaine Select and Daniel Hubbard
DESCRIPTION:Please join us Saturday\, April 9\, at 7 p.m.\, for our upcoming tasting with Daniel C. Hubbard of Domaine Select Wine Estates (DSWE). He has planned a power-point presentation to share with us his extensive knowledge of German wine.  As DSWE’s Central European portfolio manager and Mid-Atlantic sales manager\, Daniel is well established with the German wine scene\, as our board member Christian Schiller can attest.  They met at the 1st International Riesling Symposium last year at Schloss Reinhartshausen in the Rheingau. The tasting will be at the Harbour Square Club Room.  As you will recall\, this venue provides us a stunning view of the Washington skyline. The price for this tasting is $35 for members and $42 for non-members.In 2010\, DSWE was named Food & Wine magazine’s Importer of the Year.  The German wine portfolio of DSWE is exquisite and diverse\, containing\, at one end\, the Pfalz wines of Weingut Christmann\, whose owner\, Steffen Christmann\, is the current VDP President\, the organization of Germany’s elite winemakers\, and at the other end\, the wines of Dirk Wuertz\, a young and upcoming German winemaker who sells his Rieslings as bag-in box wines at Whole Foods and New York’s trendy wine bar “The Ten Bells.”  It’s one heck of a selection! The wines have been selected.  They are four flights of three wines each\, each flight representing a particular vintner.  The wines are: 2009 Christmann\, Riesling\, Deidesheimer Paradiesgarten\, Pfalz2009 Christmann\, Riesling IDIG GG\, Pfalz2009 Kuhling-Gillot\, Riesling Nierstein\, Rheinhessen Rheinhessen2009 Peter-Jakob Kühn\, Riesling Quarzit\, Rheingau2009 Peter-Jakob Kühn\, Riesling Doosberg\, 1. SUMMARY:Luxembourg Wine Tasting at Luxembourg Embassy
DESCRIPTION:Mark your calendars! We have been invited to an exciting opportunity to enjoy the wines of the “other Mosel\,” the Moselle River in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg\, at the beautiful setting of the Embassy of Luxembourg on March 18\, 2011 at 6:30 p.m.   The price for the evening’s tasting is $25 per participant.  This  amount will form our charitable donation\, as requested by the Embassy in lieu of an event charge. The deadline to submit reservations for this event is March 14\, 2011.  The Embassy of Luxembourg is able to accommodate a maximum of 40 guests.  As this event is expected to be quite popular\, please send your check promptly with your reservation.  Also\, please bring identification for admission to the Embassy. About Luxembourg Winemaking: Luxembourg has a 2000-year history of wine-making\, but its wine production is not large and  exports are mainly to Belgium and Germany\, so this tasting affords a unique chance to try a variety of wines from Luxembourg in the United States.  In addition to sharing a great wine-producing region with Germany (Luxembourg’s vineyards in the Moselle valley adjoin Germany’s Upper Mosel)\, most of the grapes grown in Luxembourg are also found in Germany\, including the noble Riesling\, Pinot Gris (Ruländer)\, Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder)\, Gewürztraminer\, Auxerrois\, Mueller-Thurgau\, and Elbling.   However\, most of the wines of Luxembourg are drier than those produced in Germany\, and the classification system varies considerably from the one familiar to German wine-lovers\, so this should be a very interesting experience in learning about the different ways that one of Germany’s neighbors can produce fine wines using the same grapes and river valley as our familiar German Mosel wines.   The Ambassador of Luxembourg\, Jean-Paul Senninger\, who is from Luxembourg’s wine-growing region\, will present the wines personally\, and there will also be a presentation on wine-making in Luxembourg. About the Evening: The four principal types of wines that will be available come from one of Luxembourg’s largest producers\, Bernard-Massard\, and its Clos des Rochers estate.  These include Clos des Rochers Riesling\, Clos des Rochers Pinot Gris\, and Clos des Rochers Auxerrois\, as well as a Bernard-Massard Cuvee de l’Ecusson Cremant\, Luxembourg’s well-known sparkling wine.  In addition\, the Embassy plans to offer some wines for tasting from its private stock\, produced by the State-owned wine institute’s own vineyards and not available for sale to the general public\, likely including a Gewürztraminer.  Through the evening\, the Embassy will be serving light refreshments artfully prepared by its chef.

SUMMARY:New Vintage Tasting with Phil Bernstein
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for our upcoming tasting with Phil Bernstein of Addy Bassins. The tasting is scheduled for Friday\, February 25\, at 7 p.m. at the Harbour Square Club Room.  As you will recall\, this venue provides us a stunning view of the Washington skyline.  The price for this tasting is $35 for members and $42 for non-members. This event will provide an opportunity to taste the new German vintage\, 2009.  This is a vintage that has been widely hailed as excellent by the critics. It also provides a nice contrast to the 2008s we tasted with Phil last year: 2008 was a classic year\, with minerality and acidity rather than lots of sugar; 2009 retains the minerality and acidity but it’s wrapped up in more substance.  In the words of Terry Theise\, 2008 is the little sister who likes dancing; 2009 is the older brother who likes playing sports. The wines are just arriving\, and now is a great time to sample what is available so you can make choices about what to buy based on the most important information of all — what tastes good to you! SUMMARY:Exciting pairing of wines at the National Press Club
DESCRIPTION:Our special event at the National Press Club is almost upon us — less than two weeks away. We’ve prepared a very special evening for you on Friday\, August 13. We’re heading to the Orient\, via the National Press Club downtown\, to sample wines specially selected for us by James Kellaris.  The evening’s theme is the pairing of our favorite wines with Southeast Asian cuisine.  The NPC chef is very excited about this challenge and is whipping up a menu sure to please all palates. This event will feature light fair\, with each of the three courses served Mezze-style to the table. James Kellaris comes to us from Roanoke Valley Wine Company\, whose German wine portfolio is terrific\, and brings with him a wealth of knowledge on German wine. He will be discussing each of the wines as it is served and comment on how the character of each wine goes with the food being served. Perhaps you have made James’ acquaintance at Arrowine\, where he occasionally presents his wines on Fridays and Saturdays. Here are the wines we will be tasting\, paired with light dishes specially selected to match the wines. A TRIO OF DRY WINES –        Hans Wirsching\, Silvaner 2007 (Franken)         Pfeffingen\, Dry Riesling 2007 (Pfalz)         Becker\, Pinot Noir 2007 (Pfalz) A TRIO OF KABINETTS        JJ Pruem\, Wehlener Sonnenuhr\, Riesling Kabinett 2007 (Mosel)         Gunderloch\, “Jean Baptiste\,” Riesling Kabinett 2008 (Rheinhessen)         Von Buhl\, Armand\, Riesling Kabinett 2008 (Pfalz)   III.    RESERVE WINES –         Schlossgut Diel\, Dorsheimer Goldloch\, Riesling Grosses Gewaechs 2006 (Nahe)         Schaefer Froehlich\, Bockenauer Felseneck\, Riesling Spaetlese 2008 (Nahe) This promises to be a wonderful event so send off your reservations right away and don’t miss out. The price for this paired tasting is just $60 for members and $67 for non-members. The address for our tasting is 529 14th St NW Washington\, DC 20045. We recommend taking Metro\, but it is very easy to get to the NPC and park there. The deadline for reservations is Tuesday\, August 10.
