SUMMARY:Wine Cruise at the Potomac - July 16th\, 2022
DESCRIPTION:ANNOUNCING THE RETURN OF THE GERMAN WINE SOCIETY’S POTOMAC WINE CRUISE!Get ready to cast off on the Potomac for a German wine cruise! Yes\, the Capital Chapter of the German Wine Society is once again holding our Potomac wine cruise this summer\, back by popular demand after last year’s very successful voyage. As we did in July 2021\, and also regularly for several years in 2010-2013 and earlier\, we will enjoy the traditional GWS summer wine cruise past the beautiful river banks and monuments of our nation’s Capital. Please join us to enjoy many wines from Germany and other countries as we cruise along the Potomac for two hours\, from 3 pm to 5 pm on Saturday\, July 16\, 2022. We will board Capitol River Cruises’ Nightingale from the Georgetown waterfront\, at 3050 K Street N.W.\, Washington\, D.C. – the end of 31st Street\, by the Fiola Mare restaurant. Be sure to be on the wharf before departure time – the cruise boat cannot wait for late arrivals! We can accommodate only 50 guests on the Nightingale for this event\, so reserve early to avoid disappointment. Reservations for this event are due by Tuesday\, July 12\, 2022\, to give us sufficient time to have enough wine and supplies for all aboard.Parking is readily available in garages along the Georgetown riverfront\, and it is possible to walk from Metro at the Foggy Bottom station as well (if you are a good walker). We will be providing all the wines for this event\, as well as disposable plastic glasses and cutlery\, paper plates and napkins\, and will also bring some deli sandwiches or other snacks. Guests are also encouraged to bring their own favorite cheeses\, breads or other food on board. This will be a relaxing cruise\, with no presentation\, allowing everyone to concentrate on the wines\, good company and atmosphere. There are many outdoor and indoor dining establishments along the Georgetown waterfront for dinner after the cruise\, which we encourage you to try.The Nightingale is a boat we have used for some previous cruises\, and is all on one level\, with tables and chairs\, and a bar area from which we can serve wines. It also has protection against inclement weather\, though we have been fortunate with our past wine cruises and reasonably hope for a sunny afternoon once again. The cruise will take place rain or shine\, unless weather conditions do not allow the cruise to set out safely\, in which case we will reschedule or provide refunds. The wines for our cruise will be a mixture of whites and reds\, mostly German but with some other international wines included as well for variety (from Luxembourg\, Alsace\, Austria\, or other regions of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire). There will be a good mixture of both dry and sweet wines\, including many Spätlese prädikat wines! Because this is not a formal presentation\, and we will only have one or two bottles on hand of each of the wines listed\, everyone will not get the same wines\, but all on the voyage should have the chance to savor around 8-10 different wines. We look forward to sharing the lovely qualities of these German and international wines with our members and guests again in-person\, an experience we had to miss for much of the past two years. Here’s the wine list we have planned: Sparkling WinesNV Von Winning Riesling Sekt Extra Brut Pfalz2016 Von Schubert Maximin Grunhauser Riesling Sekt BrutGerman Wines (8 of 13 German wine regions represented)2015 Vinum Autmundis Umstädter Stachelberg Pinot Blanc Trocken Hessische Bergstrasse2015 and 2016 Bollig-Lehnert Piesporter Goldtropfchen Riesling Spätlese Mosel2019 Clemens Busch Riesling Trocken Mosel2019 Clemens Busch von Roten Schiefer Riesling Mosel2013 Donnhoff Norheimer Kirschberg Riesling Spätlese Nahe2016 Donnhoff Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Spatlese Nahe2014 Dr. Loosen Riesling Mosel2017 Dr. Thanisch Riesling Spätlese Mosel2015 Dr. Nagler Ruedesheim Bischofsberg Riesling Kabinett Feinherb Rheingau2019 Dr. Wagner Ockfener Bockstein Riesling Kabinett Mosel2017 Erich Schonleber Halenberg Riesling GG Nahe2018 Falkenstein Niedermenninger Herrenberg Riesling Spätlese Feinherb Mosel2018 Falkenstein Krettnacher Eucharisberg Riesling Kabinett Alte Reben Mosel2015 Forstmeister Geltz Zilliken Saarburger Rausch Riesling Kabinett MoselNV Fritz Muller Perlwein Mueller-Thurgau Trocken Rheinhessen2017 Knauss Trollinger Wuerttemberg2017 Messmer BurrWeller Altenforst Rieslaner Spätlese Pfalz2014 Muller-Catoir Haarst Buergergarten Riesling Trocken Pfalz2016 Schnaitmann Lemberger Trocken Wuerttemberg2018 Shelter Winery Lovely Lilly Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder) Baden Wines from Other Countries (6 countries represented)2012 Bernard-Massard Rivaner Luxembourg2017 Paul Blanck Gewuerztraminer Alsace2017 Hillinger Spatburgunder Burgenland Austria2014 Markowitsch Rubin Carnuntum Zweigelt Goettlesbrunn Austria2014 Chateau Valtice Vino z Czech Rivaner Czechia2015 Brkic Citfucka Zilavka Bosnia2017 Cantina Tramin Lagrein Sudtirol Italy2018 Elena Walch Trollinger Südtirol ItalyOur event price is $68 for members and $75 for non-member guests. Despite rising fuel costs that have substantially increased the cost for our boat rental\, our event price is only $5 more than last year. As our GWS chapter website is still not working properly for orders and we cannot post this event there yet\, we are requesting all members and guests to make their reservations by mailing in the attached reservation form with a check. Please make all checks payable to “German Wine Society” and send by mail to Carl Willner\, Capital Chapter President and Secretary and the organizer for this event\, at 1014 Reserve Champion Drive\, Rockville\, MD 20850\, together with the completed registration form below. Cut the reservation form below and send with your check – do not mail the entire page. If you owe dues to qualify for member status\, please submit a $35 dues payment (for an individual or couple) either online or by check. The Chapter Secretary can confirm your membership status if you are not sure. If you have questions about the event\, please contact Carl Willner by email at carl.willner1@verizon.net. If the website is restored and we can post the event there before the deadline\, you would also then have the option to register and pay for this event via Paypal by going to our website: https://germanwinesocietydc.org. You will need to set up a GWS account if you have not done so already for past events\, and have a Paypal account. We are eagerly anticipating seeing all of you in person again for this comfortable afternoon on the Potomac! All GWS members and guests are reminded that alcohol consumption can lead to intoxication. Members and guests should rely on a designated driver or public transportation\, and if those are not available\, drink in moderation\, tasting the wines rather than finishing them.We are very pleased that it has become safe enough to do in-person events once again\, consistent with CDC guidelines and local D.C. health rules. For added security of our members\, however\, we request that you attend this event only if you have been fully vaccinated against covid-19. Proof of vaccination will be requested\, and can either be shown when arriving for the event\, or supplied in advance by a legible e-mailed photo. We have followed this policy successfully since last year’s cruise\, and given that covid risks still exist in our community\, we want everyone to be able to feel secure in attending this special wine cruise. We are not sure whether there will be any mask requirement in effect at the time of the cruise\, either imposed by city authorities or the cruise company\, but please have a mask on hand to wear when boarding and interacting with boat crew should that be required (the crew has also been vaccinated). Masks will not be required otherwise once everyone is aboard – a significant advantage of doing an outdoor event._______________________________________________________________________________________ RESERVATION FORM for Saturday\, July 16\, 2022\, German Wine Society Potomac Wine Cruise Member(s) Name(s) ___________________________________________________ Guest(s) Names(s) _____________________________________________________ Total Enclosed ________________________________________________________ Daytime/ Cell Phone Number _____________________________________________ E-Mail _______________________________________________________________

SUMMARY:GWS New Vintage Tasting (2020 Wines) with Phil Bernstein - May 20th\, 2022
DESCRIPTION:Every year we host a tasting to try German wines from the new vintage\, with a focus on Riesling. Our host is Phil Bernstein\, General Manager of MacArthur Beverages\, one of the leading retailers of German Riesling in the country. Every year\, Phil brings fabulous wines for us to try and this year will definitely be no exception. We now have a tentative wine list for the event to share with you. The new vintage is 2020. Last year we tasted the wines of 2018 and 2019\, so this event brings us up to date. Early reports describe the 2020 wines as: beautiful\, elegant\, classic. John Gilman writes that some of the 2020s are the best young German Rieslings he has ever tasted. We will be enjoying 10 German wines from 2020 plus a welcoming sparkling wine\, with a variety of Feinherb\, GG\, Kabinett\, Spätlese and Auslese. The tentative list is below. As those who have attended previous New Vintage events are aware\, Phil always chooses a good mix of high-quality producers for us\, with both dry wines and sweet wines of various prädikat levels. There will also be a selection of cheeses\, breads or crackers\, cold cuts and veggies provided to accompany the tasting. First Flight: Fine Feinherbs Weiser-Kunstler Riesling Feinherb MoselPeter Lauer Barrel X Riesling Feinherb Mosel (Saar)Second Flight: Glorious GGs from Emrich-Schonleber Emrich-Schonleber Fruhlingsplatzchen Riesling GG Nahe (96 WA)Emrich-Schonleber Halenberg Riesling GG Nahe (96 WA) Third Flight: A Kabinett Duo Willi Schaefer Graacher Himmelreich (or Domprobst) Riesling Kabinett Mosel (93 WA\, 94 JS)Carl von Schubert Maximin Grunhauser Abtsberg Riesling Mosel Fourth Flight: A Pair from Prüm JJ Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett MoselJJ Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Kabinett SpätleseFifth Flight: Auslese Grand Finale Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Sonnenuhr “Rotlay” Riesling Auslese Mosel (98 JS)Weiser-Kunstler Enkircher Ellergrub Riesling Auslese Mosel (375 ml) DATE: Friday\, May 20th\, 2022. Doors open at 6:30 pm; tasting begins at 7:00 pm. REGISTRATION DEADLINE: Tuesday\, May 17\, 2022.VENUE: The Colonnades\, 2801 New Mexico Ave\, NW\, Washington\, DC. There is parking on New Mexico Ave and valet parking for a small fee. Please be sure to reserve on time for this popular event\, as we have a capacity limit of 50 at this location\, as we did last year. This event is taking place in the Party Room\, entered through the Card Room – turn right from the main lobby after you come into the building.COST: $56 per person for members\, $66 per person for non-members.If you have any questions about the tasting\, please email the organizer\, Dave Wendler: davewendler@yahoo.com. For questions about membership status and registration\, please email the Chapter President and Secretary\, Carl Willner\, at carl.willner1@verizon.net . We normally have two ways to register and pay for our events\, either sending a check and the registration form through the mail\, or registering online through out website and submitting payment using a PayPal account. However\, we are experiencing difficulties with loading new event announcements and payment links on our website at present\, and it does not appear those problems will be resolved before this event takes place\, so for this event\, we are asking all members and guests to pay using the traditional method of mailing the form with a check. To register and pay by check\, complete the form below\, and detach and mail it\, with your check made out to the ‘German Wine Society’\, to the Chapter President and Secretary\, Carl Willner\, at: 1014 Reserve Champion Drive\, Rockville\, MD 20850. If registering as a member and your dues are not current (confirm with the Secretary first if not sure)\, also include a payment of $35 for dues\, as an individual or a couple. Once the website is working properly\, if this happens in time\, an event announcement will be posted there with a payment link. As it is unlikely that we will have the website available\, though\, we encourage you to register now by the one method we have available. Registration and payment by PayPal\, when this is working\, is done through our chapter website: germanwinesocietydc.org. If you will be making a payment online to register for our Society’s events\, or to pay membership dues ($35 per person or couple\, annually)\, please be sure to have a PayPal account established to use; we cannot accept payment by other forms of credit. For the safety of all of our members and guests\, we are continuing to require that participants in this event provide proof of vaccination for covid-19. Please be prepared to show proof of vaccination (a physical vaccination card or legible electronic image) when arriving at the event\, or send proof in advance to the Chapter President and Secretary at the email address above. Masks are optional for this event\, unless the District of Columbia health authorities or the Colonnade re-impose a masking requirement before the event date. All GWS members are reminded that alcohol consumption can lead to intoxication. Therefore\, Society members and their guests are expected to drink in moderation at Society events. Please bear in mind the usual precautions about either taking public transportation or a taxi/Uber (unfortunately the Colonnade is not near a Metro stop)\, having a designated driver where available\, or mostly tasting rather than consuming alcohol when such drivers are not available. All participants must be of legal age (21 years of age or older) to join the event and consume alcoholic beverages. If you no longer wish to receive messages from the German Wine Society\, please notify the President and Secretary at the above email address.____________________________________________________________________________ Cut and return this portion of the notice if registering by mail – do not return the entire form.GERMAN WINE SOCIETY NEW VINTAGE TASTING – May 20th\, 2022Member(s) Name___________________________________________________Non-Member(s) Name_______________________________________________ Amount Paid ______________________________________________________Email ____________________________________________________________ Telephone__________________________________________________________ Carl Willner carl.willner1@verizon.net + Add to contacts

SUMMARY:A Tale of Two Gs: Comparative Tasting of German and Georgian Varietals in the Finger Lakes - April 2nd\, 2022
DESCRIPTION:Gs: Comparative Tasting of German and Georgian Varietals in the Finger Lakes – April 2nd\, 2022\nApril 2 @ 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm \n\nGerman Wine Society Members and Friends\, \n\nWe would like to remind you of our upcoming New York winery tasting\, which features a virtual presentation and wines to be shipped to us directly from the winery\, including some grapes that we have never tried in our Society’s events before. This is an event not to be missed! Please register with the Capital Chapter of the German Wine Society and purchase your wine packs from the winery as explained in this notice\, as soon as possible. There is still time to get your wines before the tasting\, but the deadline is getting close. \n\nThis event reminder also provides notice of a wine substitution. Our host for this event\, the Dr. Konstantin Frank winery\, informs us that the Pinot Noir described in our prior communication has unexpectedly sold out\, apparently because of a recent very successful benefit the winery conducted for Ukraine. We have agreed it will be replaced by the winery with their Blaufränkisch for all sales going forward\, though a few participants who ordered early are still receiving the Pinot Noir. Both will be discussed during the event. \n\nWe will now have a tasting of a Riesling and a Blaufränkisch – the former being the most widely planted white grape in Germany\, while the latter is a red grape also known as Lemberger in Germany and primarily planted there in the Württemberg wine region around the town of Stuttgart. Blaufränkisch is also planted in several other countries in Central Europe\, including Austria\, Slovenia (its German name came from being imported to Germany from Lemberg in the region of Lower Styria\, then in the Austro-Hungarian Empire and now in Slovenia) and Hungary. These will be tasted side by side with the two ancient varietals Rkatsiteli (white) and Saperavi (red) originating in the country of Georgia\, considered to be the oldest wine producing nation in the world. We will compare these Old World varieties planted in the New World. \nWe will be visiting again with Meaghan Frank of the Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery in the Finger Lakes. A number of wineries and winemakers in the Finger Lakes produce a wide range of high-quality wines. The Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery is among the most prominent of these\, and was a pioneer in establishing and developing the region. \n\nBefore the GWS held our first virtual event with the Dr. Konstantin Frank winery in 2021\, our Vice President Christian Schiller had written about the winery and its wines in his wine blog\, and we had enjoyed some of their wines at our events. Our virtual event last year with Meaghan Frank focused on Rieslings\, and we tasted wines from sparkling through late-harvest. Those who had the chance to attend that event will recall that Meaghan was a most gracious and knowledgeable guide to her family’s vineyard and its varied wines. \n\nThis time we will meet via Zoom on Saturday\, April 2\, 2022\, from 4 pm – 6 pm EST. This event requires both registration with the GWS to attend the event\, and a purchase of one of the packages of wines offered from the vineyard to participate (the GWS does not sell the wines). Above all\, please plan ahead with sufficient time to purchase and receive your wines directly from the winery. You may choose one of three packages\, as detailed below. These wines are offered at all-in prices with a generous discount and shipping costs are included (applicable taxes vary by state and will be added). The deadline to register for this event is on Friday\, March 18\, 2022. \n\nOur presenter\, Meaghan Frank\, is the fourth generation to run the winery. She is the great granddaughter of the founder\, Dr. Konstantin Frank. Meaghan earned an MBA in wine business from the University of Adelaide\, Australia\, a Masters in enology from Cornell University\, New York\, and the WSET Diploma from the Wine & Spirit Education Trust. \n\nFrederick Frank\, President of the winery\, remains involved\, and took over from his father\, Willy Frank. Fred is a graduate of Cornell University and attended the Geisenheim Research Institute for Viticulture and Enology in Germany. \n\n\nFounder Dr. Konstantin Frank\, of German ancestry\, was born in Odessa in 1899\, then part of the Tsarist Russian Empire. He earned his Ph.D. in Viticulture in the Ukraine. Surviving the Russian Revolution and two World Wars\, Dr. Frank arrived in New York with his family in 1951. He purchased land in the Finger Lakes\, and\, as told by the winery\, “With decades of knowledge and experience\, Dr. Frank successfully planted the first European grape varieties in the Eastern United States in 1958.” Others thought the region was too cold for European vitis vinifera varietals\, but he proved otherwise. When the first vintage was released in 1962\, Dr. Frank was 63 years old. Also\, he founded the American Wine Society. \n\nIn the book\, “Finger Lakes Wine and the Legacy of Dr. Konstantin Frank\,” published in 2015\, author Tom Russ refers to Dr. Frank as the “Father of Vinifera in the East” and writes that he “is remembered throughout the United States as a pioneer and advocate for vinifera grapes and quality wine.” The book\, which is optional\, is available at www.Amazon.com. \n\nFor more information\, you may also wish to visit the website at www.drfrankwines.com. \n\nBecause we are continuing to operate in a virtual environment for this event\, we have a different type of process to sign up for and participate in this tasting than for our in-person events. The first step\, as usual\, is to register for the event\, either using PayPal for payment \n\nRegister for this Event click here \n \n\n\nor by completing and submitting the attached registration form and including a check made out to the German Wine Society. The price to participate in this event is modest\, just $10 per membership account (individual or couple) for members\, or $20 for non-members\, to contribute to our D.C. chapter expenses. You will need to have internet access to Zoom to participate in our tasting\, either downloaded on your computer or otherwise available through your browser. Everyone who registers by the deadline will receive a Zoom link on the day of the event from board member Karen Stokes. \n\nhe next step is to choose and order your wines for the tasting from the vineyard. Meaghan Frank will present the two white wines in one round followed by the two red wines. You do not have to order all of the wines. You may order the two white wines or the two red wines or all four wines: \n\nPackage #1 (2 Bottle Pack – White Wine): Package Price $50.00 \n\nRkatsiteli\, 2021 – Elegant\, aromatic and tropical\, Rkatsiteli originates in the country of Georgia. It is one of the oldest grape varieties in the world dating back to 3000 B.C. The grape has a strong resistance to cold winters and retains crisp acidity. \n\nMargrit Dry Riesling\, 2019 – A special single-vineyard Riesling from a warmer site that produces riper grapes\, this wine is dry but does contains residual sugar at 5.9 g/L. The Magrit Riesling has an impressive rating of 92 points from the Wine Advocate. \n\nPackage #2 (2 Bottle Pack – Red Wine): Package Price $55.00 \n\nSaperavi\, 2019 – This ancient variety native to Georgia was first brought to the Finger Lakes by the founder in the early 1960s. Fermented in stainless steel\, the wine is aged 16 months in new and old French Oak. The winery describes it as violet in color and full bodied with polished tannins and notes of plum\, black cherry\, earth\, cedar and smoke. \n\nBlaufränkisch\, 2019 – This wine is aged 18 months\, 20% in new\, and 80% in 2-4 year old\, French oak. The dark-skinned grape also known as Lemberger is a late-ripening variety\, growing well in certain cooler-weather regions such as the Finger Lakes\, and producing red wines which are typically rich in tannin. Flavors are described as those of plums and blueberries with a characteristic spicy richness. \n\nOld Vines Pinot Noir\, 2019 (for those who received this wine instead by an early order) – The Pinot Noir includes grapes from vines planted by the founder in 1958\, some of the oldest Pinot Noir vines in the United States. Fermented in stainless steel\, the wine is aged 18 months in 2-4 year old French Oak. Descriptors from the winery include cranberry and red cherry flavors with subtle oak and a long finish. \n\nPackage #3 (4 Bottle Pack): Package Price $100 \n\nAll of the above wines in both packages\, including one bottle each of the 2019 Margrit Dry Riesling\, the 2021 Rkatsiteli\, the 2019 Blaufränkisch and the 2019 Saperavi\, for $5.00 less than buying the two packages separately. An excellent deal\, especially with flat-rate shipping included in the total price! Experience every wine in the tasting from the comfort of home. \n\nLink to order packages (copy into your browser rather than just clicking): \n\nhttps://www.drfrankwines.com/german-wine-society-dc/ \nShould you have any questions about purchases or shipping\, please contact the winery directly. We have included the above link for ordering the wine packages for you to plan ahead to order and have these wines in time for the tasting and for your inventory. The winery will ship to California\, Pennsylvania\, Maryland\, Virginia and Washington\, D.C.\, plus other continental States at their discretion and subject to State regulations. We will be letting other GWS chapters know of the opportunity to participate in this tasting – one of the advantages of a virtual event! \n\nArrange your favorite appetizers and other dishes to accompany your wines\, and be ready to enjoy the tasting. \nAll correspondence in response to this email should be directed to our President and acting Secretary\, Carl Willner\, by email to carl.willner1@verizon.net\, or by mail at:Carl Willner \n1014 Reserve Champion Drive Rockville\, MD 20850 \nIf you will be making a payment online to register for the event\, or to pay membership dues ($35 per person or couple\, annually)\, please be sure to use PayPal; we cannot accept payment by other forms of credit. If you decide to register by mail\, please mail your registration to the Chapter Secretary at the above address\, with your check made out to the German Wine Society. \nAll GWS members are reminded that alcohol consumption can lead to intoxication. Therefore\, Society members and their guests are expected to drink in moderation at Society events. Fortunately\, one of the benefits of holding an online event is that most of you will be safely at home and not driving to the event\, but should you decide to visit a friend to participate from there\, please bear in mind the usual precautions about having a designated driver where available\, or mostly tasting rather than consuming alcohol when such drivers are not available. All participants must be of legal age (21 years of age or older) to join the event and consume alcoholic beverages. \nCarl Willner President and Secretary\, German Wine Society Capital Chapter \n\nPlease clip and return this registration form if registering by mail\, to the Secretary at the address listed above. SUMMARY:2022 Capital Chapter Membership Zoom Meeting - Saturday\, Feb. 26th\, 2022
DESCRIPTION:Prosit Neujahr! Online registration for the 2022 Capital Chapter Membership Meeting is now open! Please make reservations by February 21\, 2022. This year’s Membership Meeting will take place on Saturday\, February 26\, 2022\, starting at 5:00 pm EST\, and planned to last until about 7 pm. As with our last Membership Meeting in February 2021\, due to continuing health concerns\, the Membership Meeting this year will be held online\, using Zoom. You will have to have access to Zoom to participate in the meeting\, either downloaded on your computer or otherwise available through your browser (please note\, however\, that there is an option for members to vote in the election by mail even if you do not have Zoom access). Everyone who provides notification of their intent to come (by registering on the website\, by mail or email) will receive a Zoom link from Board member Karen Stokes by email prior to the event\, which can be used to log in at the start time. The meeting’s start time at 5:00 pm EST allows members who may be in Europe also to participate. Our agenda will begin with reports from the officers of the Chapter\, followed by the Board election\, and then open discussion of other chapter business and questions. The business portion of the meeting will be followed by the fun part – a multiple-choice quiz on knowledge of German wines on the theme of “What Wine Am I Drinking?” for a wine prize from our cellar (to be delivered as soon as we can have in-person events again\, or by arrangement with the Cellarmaster for pickup). Of course\, as this is an online event\, members will supply their own choice of wines\, cheeses and other foods\, and there will be an opportunity to discuss your wine choices with other participants\, as we did during the last Membership Meeting. Members pay nothing for this event (but still need to register via our website or mail\, or by email to the Secretary\, so that we can have an accurate count of who is coming and can send the Zoom link to everyone); non-members pay $10 each\, through website registration using PayPal or by check. There will be a discussion of our finances\, membership and cellar status\, followed by an open discussion of plans for the future. What would you like to have the Society do – what are your expectations? The Board needs to know! The Chapter Board is also proposing several amendments to our Chapter By-Laws\, which have not been updated since 2014. These amendments are attached for your consideration. We will vote on adoption of the amendments at the Membership Meeting\, but those not able to attend can also vote by returning the completed form attached to the proposed amendments to the Secretary\, by mail or email\, by February 21. It is at this annual meeting we elect new officers and directors to the Chapter Board. Only members in good standing\, with annual dues payments current\, are entitled to vote in the election or to attend this event free of charge; $35 annual dues payments per individual or couple may be made online through the website using PayPal or by check to ensure that you are current\, before the meeting. Please contact the Secretary if you are not sure whether you are current. Members can vote in person at the meeting\, or by returning their written ballots by February 21\, 2022. Candidate statements and the ballot form (for those who will not be voting in person at the election but would still like to submit a vote) are attached to this notice in a separate document. Nominations of other candidates than those listed below and on the attached ballot have to be received by no later than Saturday\, February 12\, 2022\, under our By-Laws\, so as to allow revised ballots for the election to be prepared and distributed. All of the candidates running have already been serving in their positions\, but we have one open Director position without a candidate\, due to the loss in 2020 of our longtime member and friend Stephen Kent. The Chapter President is also running for Chapter Secretary\, in the absence of a separate candidate to fill the Secretary position; he was elected to serve in both capacities for the past two years. The candidates running for positions on the Board this election are: Carl Willner – for Chapter President and Secretary (positions listed separately on ballot) Christian Schiller – for Chapter Vice President Ken Belsley – for Chapter Treasurer Maria So – for Director\, also serving as Webmaster Jim Palanchar – for Director Karen Stokes – for Director\, also serving as Cellarmaster Our By-Laws do not permit nominations from the floor at the meeting for any position for which a candidate is already running\, but only in advance so that ballots for a disputed election can be prepared\, although floor nominations for uncontested positions are allowed. For this election\, all Board positions except one Director slot have one candidate running. You can give back to the Chapter by volunteering to plan or help with a monthly tasting\, in addition to serving on the board. Your active participation in planning and managing events helps the organization grow – and to do so in the direction you choose. All correspondence in response to this email should be directed to our President and Secretary\, Carl Willner\, by email to carl.willner1@verizon.net or by mail at: Carl Willner 1014 Reserve Champion Drive Rockville\, MD 20850 Carl Willner President and Secretary\, German Wine Society Capital Chapter ___________________________________________________________________________________ Please clip and return this registration form if registering by mail\, to the Secretary at the address listed above. Do not return the entire event notice. If you are voting by mail rather than by participating in the online meeting\, please also clip the ballot form from the attached Candidate Statement and return that to the Secretary\, as well as your vote on the By-Laws amendments. Reservation Form for GERMAN WINE SOCIETY CAPITAL CHAPTER MEMBERSHIP MEETING\, SATURDAY\, FEBRUARY 26\, 2022 Name(s) _______________________________________________________________ Member or non-Member __________________________________________________ Payment submitted _______________________________________________________

SUMMARY:GWS Holiday Dinner at the Cosmos Club - Saturday December 18th\, 2021
DESCRIPTION:Ho\, Ho\, Ho\, German Wine Society Members and Friends of German Wines\, it’s nearly time to hang the stockings and dream of delicious German wine! While we had a fun holiday gathering on Zoom last year choosing our own wines and stayed safe during the pandemic\, at last we can gather in person again in Washington\, D.C. and partake of the same wines together amidst all the elegance of Embassy Row\, with the same policies we have used for our other in-person events this past summer and fall. So\, please plan to attend the GWS Holiday paired dinner at the Cosmos Club\, Saturday\, December 18\, 2021 starting at 7 pm\, with registration and service of welcoming sekt and hors d’oeuvres beginning at 6:30 pm. We are very fortunate to have access to this elegant and festive venue again this year\, marking our return after our last event there in December 2019. This has become possible because the Cosmos Club is now requiring vaccination against covid-19 for all staff\, members and guests in the mansion. The paired dinner includes a variety of eight wines (mainly German\, with one Austrian)\, among them high-prädikat selections\, and a three-course meal preceded by hors d’oeuvres. In addition\, there will be entertainment – holiday piano music\, and an opportunity to sing some German and other traditional songs together! This year\, we are offering a choice of four different entrees with different prices\, more options than ever before – be sure to register for the one you want\, and if there are multiple people on your order\, register separately for each different entree choice. Location: The address for our holiday dinner is 2021 Massachusetts Avenue\, N.W.\, Washington\, D.C. 20008\, just a few blocks from Dupont Circle. Metro is near (Dupont Circle Red Line) and parking is available to the rear of the club. The stunning venue is\, as in past years\, the wood-paneled Members Dining Room on the 2nd floor in this landmark building. Perfect for a special holiday wine event with family and friends! Safety Precautions: Please remember that we\, like the Cosmos Club\, require all members and guests to be fully vaccinated against covid-19\, and we also require proof of vaccination (CDC card or other official document)\, either when checking in for the event or beforehand by providing an email photo to carl.willner1@verizon.net. NO EXCEPTIONS. We have followed this policy successfully at our other in-person events this fall\, allowing all members and guests to enjoy the event safely. Please also wear masks when arriving\, moving through the club and checking in\, though you can of course remove masks during the dinner. Menu: The paired menu will be as follows: Welcome and hors d’oeuvres Belgian Endive with Pickled Cranberry-Chevre Mousse\, Charred Broccoli Salmon Rilette with Lemon Pepper Caviar\, Buckwheat Blini Barbecue Spice Grilled Steak Skewer with Chimichurri Sauce nv Dr. Loosen “Dr. L” Sparkling (Sekt) Riesling Salad appetizer Kabocha Squash (Caramelized Squash\, Spiced Pecans\, Spinach\, Pomegranate-ginger Vinaigrette) Popover Bread 2017 Dr. Heyden Silvaner Old Vines Trocken Rheinhessen 2015 Dr. Nagler Rüdesheim Bischofsberg Riesling Kabinett Rheingau Entree (choose one dish when registering) Porcini Rubbed Beef Tenderloin (Roasted Root Vegetable Medley\, Haricots Vert\, Veal Glaze\, Sherried Arugula Salad) Roasted Duck Breast (Kale Saute\, Turnip Puree\, Pickled Red Onion\, Dried Cherry Jus) Seared Atlantic Halibut (Artichokes\, Plum and Tomato Stew) Seitan and Chickpea Stuffed Eggplant (Eggplant\, Crispy Brussels Sprouts\, Swiss Chard\, Pickled Shallots )(vegetarian option) 2016 Dr. Thanisch Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Kabinett Feinherb Mosel 2012 Spritzer Oestricher Lenchen 303 Riesling Spätlese Rheingau 2019 Hofgut Falkenstein Niedermenniger Herrenberg Rotwein Trocken Mosel Dessert Chocolate Pot au Creme (Dried Meringue\, Fresh Berries) 2016 Heinz Eifel Mainzer Domherr Silvaner Eiswein Rheinhessen 2015 Steindorfer Cuvée Klaus (70% Ottonel/30% Sauvignon Blanc) Beerenauslese Burgenland Austria Coffee and Tea Service Parking: Club parking is off Florida Avenue behind the club. There is a small white sign showing the parking entrance. Parking is included in the event price and there is no tipping at the club including the valet parking. Parking is limited and club members have preference. It is highly advisable not to arrive late in case there are other functions going on at the club that evening. Dress Code: The dress code for the Cosmos Club is strict – jackets and ties for men\, comparable business or evening attire for women. No jeans or tennis shoes Prices: The dinner price\, varying by entree selected\, is: Porcini Rubbed Beef Tenderloin $176 members/$186 non-members Seared Atlantic Halibut $165 members/$175 non-members Roasted Duck Breast $163 members/$173 non-members Seitan and Chickpea Stuffed Eggplant (Vegetarian) $150 members/$160 non-members If you are not sure of your current membership status\, please contact the Chapter President and Secretary\, Carl Willner\, at carl.willner1@verizon.net before ordering to confirm. When and How to Register: The deadline for reservations is Sunday\, December 12 so that we may provide the chef with an accurate count of total guests as well as the entrees chosen for each guest\, and allow time for place cards for each guest to be made. No late reservations can be allowed for this event due to these club requirements. This promises to be a wonderful event so please make your reservations right away and don’t miss out! There are two ways to join in the fun. You can register and pay online for the event using PayPal. There are separate buttons to choose each entree menu option. An email message to the Secretary at carl.willner1@verizon.net to let us know who is having each entree option would be appreciated\, if there are multiple guests on the reservation with different entree preferences – otherwise\, we will need to reach out to you. Or\, you can submit a check for the event to our Chapter President and Secretary\, Carl Willner\, payable to the German Wine Society\, at the following address and using the form below\, and making sure to note your entree preference for each guest. Any member dues that may be owed can also be paid online or by check. Please include names\, number of guests\, email and phone number. Carl Willner 1014 Reserve Champion Drive Rockville\, MD 20850 Tours: The Cosmos Club has advised us that tours of the historic club mansion for interested guests are once again possible\, as in past years\, as long as guests wear masks while moving about the building. Availability of tours will depend on willingness of members who are also Cosmos Club members to conduct them. If you would like to participate in a tour\, please reply to this message and let us know of your interest\, and you will be advised at a later date if the tours are being offered by one of our members and when to arrive for them. Questions about Event: The event organizer is Carl Willner\, who can be reached by email at carl.willner1@verizon.net\, or at 202-674-9044. Please contact him with any questions\, including current membership status\, or correspondence in response to this email. All Society Members and guests are reminded that drinking alcohol can lead to intoxication\, and therefore Society members and their guests are expected to drink in moderation at Society events. It is advisable to provide designated drivers or other alternative modes of transit to driving where available\, or mostly to taste rather than fully consume alcohol where such drivers or alternative modes of transit are not available. If you no longer wish to receive our announcements\, please reply to this email to our Secretary\, Carl Willner. If registering by mail\, please cut and return the reservation form portion of the notice below – do not mail the entire notice. ______________________________________________________________________________ Reservation form for GERMAN WINE SOCIETY HOLIDAY DINNER AT THE COSMOS CLUB\, SATURDAY\, DECEMBER 18\, 2021\, 7 pm – 10 pm (with registration and welcome beginning at 6:30 pm) Member Name(s) ______________________________________________________________ Guest Names(s) ______________________________________________________________ Total Enclosed ________________________________________________________________ Daytime Phone Number _______________________________________________________ Entrees and number of each chosen: Beef Tenderloin _____ Halibut _____Duck _____ Vegetarian _____ Please indicate who is having each entree\, if multiple guests are on the reservation.

SUMMARY:German Wine Society Red Wines Dinner Tasting - Nov. 13\, 2021
DESCRIPTION:One of the goals of the German Wine Society is education\, so we regularly present wines that may be less familiar to our members and guests. This year\, we are offering a tasting of twelve red wines made from German grape varieties\, including some produced in other countries. These wines cover a wide range of tastes\, familiar and not so familiar. The share of red wines among German wine production has increased over the past few decades from a mere 10% in the 1980s to about a third today. Global warming and greater interest in red wines have driven this change. German red wines made the news recently\, due to the severe flooding in Northwest Germany\, which badly affected the Ahr wine region\, known for making mainly red wines. We have a very high quality wine from that region\, from Weingut Mayer-Näkel. This winery was very close to the river and severely damaged. Five German wine regions\, and three other countries\, are represented in the tasting. Old Europe\, the restaurant in Washington\, D.C. hosting our event\, will provide a seasonal German buffet dinner to complement the wines. The menu has not yet been finalized\, but is expected to include an appetizer platter\, entrees such as beef gulasch with spatzle\, seasonal vegetables\, and desserts including strudel and chocolate cake. DATE: Saturday\, November 13\, 2021. Doors open at 5:30 PM\, tasting and dinner begins at 6:00 PM VENUE: Old Europe\, 2434 Wisconsin Avenue NW\, Washington\, DC. There is only limited street or outdoor lot parking in the vicinity. It is best to take a taxi or bus if possible; Metrorail is not close. COST: $78 for members/$88 non-members. Please check your membership status with the Secretary at carl.willner1@verizon.net if not sure whether you are current\, before registering. DEADLINE TO REGISTER: Saturday\, November 6\, 2021. We need to provide Old Europe with an estimate of attendance a week before the event. Finally\, because we want all of our members and guests to enjoy this event in the greatest degree of safety possible under current health conditions\, we are requiring that everyone attending this event be fully vaccinated for covid-19. You will be requested to show proof of vaccination when entering the event (or optionally in advance as indicated below). If you do not provide such proof\, you will not be admitted to the event – NO EXCEPTIONS. Please also have masks on when arriving at the event to comply with applicable rules for indoor events in D.C. – you will be able to remove them when eating and drinking. As an option\, you can submit a legible photocopy of your proof of vaccination (CDC Card or other public health authority certificate) to the President and Secretary\, Carl Willner\, in advance of the event\, by email to carl.willner1@verizon.net or with a registration form if mailed in\, and have this requirement checked off on our registration list before arrival. The staff at Old Europe are all vaccinated\, and our event will take place with as much separation from other restaurant guests as possible – either in the lower Rathskeller room which we would have to ourselves\, or separate from other diners in the main restaurant\, depending on turnout. SUMMARY:Rescheduled GWS New Vintage Plus Tasting with Phil Bernstein - Sept. 17th\, 2021
DESCRIPTION:Every year we host a tasting to try German wines from the new vintage\, with a focus on Riesling. Our host is Phil Bernstein\, General Manager of MacArthur Beverages\, one of the leading retailers of German Riesling in the country. Every year\, Phil brings fabulous wines for us to try. In March 2020\, we had planned to conduct our annual New Vintage tasting\, but were regrettably forced to postpone due to pandemic conditions. We are now pleased to announce that we have been able to reschedule this event\, renamed the “New Vintage Plus” tasting (for the additional year that has passed)\, at a new location in the Washington\, D.C. suburb of Rockville\, MD\, on Friday\, September 17\, 2021. The location we had previously used at Harbour Square in Southwest Washington\, D.C. is no longer available\, but this new location is readily accessible\, near the major highways of I-270 and MD 355 for driving and also Red Line Metro\, and with ample parking. Some of our members and guests chose to keep their reservation and payment on file with us when we postponed this event last year\, awaiting rescheduling\, but we have some additional spaces as well for new guests\, or ones who opted for refunds last year but would like to sign up again now. If you would still like to attend this event and chose to keep your reservation and payment on file with us last year\, there is nothing further you need to do\, as we have your reservation\, but please confirm by email to the Secretary at the address below to let us know you are still coming. If you do not already have a reservation on file but would like to come\, you will need to register now (we do not allow walk-ins at the event without prior registration). If you kept your reservation on file but are not able to attend on the new date\, or are not vaccinated for covid-19 and so cannot meet our vaccination requirement for attendance\, please let us know before the registration deadline and we will provide a refund of the original price paid. As originally planned in 2020\, we will sample ten German wines\, accompanied by a tasty buffet of cheeses\, breads\, grapes\, veggies and cold cuts. Some of these wines are still available from MacArthur Beverages\, if you would like to get them for yourself after tasting them\, but others are not\, and so this will be the only opportunity to try these great wines selected for us by Phil. And\, fortunately for all of us\, the U.S. government is no longer imposing special tariffs on German wines! Plus\, you will be enjoying these ten wines at pre-inflation prices from 2019 and early 2020\, the same event price we were offering in March of last year. The 2018 vintage that we will be tasting is described by Terry Theise as offering consistently fresh and wonderful wines that are “perhaps 80% delicious and 20% fascinating.” All wines below are from the 2018 vintage unless otherwise noted. Never fear\, German wine lovers – we are still planning to do another tasting or tastings later on with the wines of the 2019 and 2020 vintages\, which will be the newest vintages now available. The deadline for registration is Monday\, September 13\, 2021. We have a maximum capacity of 50 attendees at this location\, but will only have 22 additional spaces for this event\, based on those who have already registered from last year\, and have kept their reservations. Sign up soon to be sure you don’t miss this always-popular event! DATE AND TIME: Friday\, September 17\, 2021. Doors open at 6:30 pm; tasting begins at 7:00 pm. VENUE: King Farm Community Center\, 300 Saddle Ridge Circle\, Rockville\, MD 20850\, in the King Farm development. This is a large\, free-standing building in the middle of a circle\, with high ceilings\, a fireplace\, kitchen with refrigerator for wine chilling\, and French doors and a balcony overlooking a pool area (the balcony will not\, however\, be open during the event). Normally it can accommodate up to 100 people\, but capacity has been reduced to 50 for greater safety in current health conditions. Please park in the lot behind the swimming pool adjacent to the community center\, and then come around to the front of the circle (not through the pool area) to enter the building. You can reach King Farm easily when driving either off Exit 8 from I-270 (turn into King Farm using the Redland Boulevard turnoff on the right from the exit)\, or from MD 355 exiting onto Redland Boulevard into King Farm. Normally the Shady Grove Metro station on the Red Line is the most convenient to King Farm\, right across 355\, but we have learned that the two closest Metro stations\, Shady Grove and Rockville\, will be closed for repairs during this time. So\, if arriving by Metro on the Red Line\, please get off at the Twinbrook station and take a cab to King Farm from there (there may also be Metro shuttle buses connecting from Twinbrook to Shady Grove\, and if you go to Shady Grove this way there are normally shuttles running from Shady Grove into King Farm until 7:30 pm – the Red shuttle goes to the Community Center). WINES: (same as planned for last year) First Flight: Welcoming Sekts nv Von Winning Riesling Sekt Extra Brut 2016 Von Schubert Maximin Grunhauser Riesling Sekt Brut Second Flight: Glorious GGs Willi Schaefer Graacher Himmelreich Riesling GG Mosel Dönnhoff Dellchen Riesling GG Nahe Third Flight: A Flight of Fabulous Falkensteins Hofgut Falkenstein Krettnacher Euchariusberg Riesling Kabinett Alte Reben Mosel Hofgut Falkenstein Niedermenniger Herrenberg Riesling Spätlese Feinherb Mosel Fourth Flight: Dönnhoff’s Splendid Spätlese Dönnhoff Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle Riesling Spätlese Nahe Dönnhoff Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Spätlese Nahe Fifth Flight: An Auslese Grand Finale from Selbach Oster Selbach Oster Zeltinger Schlossberg “Schmitt” Riesling Auslese Mosel Selbach Oster Zeltinger Sonnenuhr “Rotlay” Riesling Auslese Mosel The Willi Schaefer and the two Selbach Osters are still listed as being available on the MacArthur Beverages website. If you have any questions about this event\, they can be sent to Carl Willner as well\, or you can contact Dave Wendler\, the original organizer\, at: davewendler@yahoo.com. There are two ways to register and pay to attend this event\, if you do not already have a paid registration on file. First\, you can complete the attached registration form\, detach it from the event notice\, and mail it to the Chapter President and Secretary\, at: Carl Willner\, 1014 Reserve Champion Drive\, Rockville\, MD 20850. Include a check for the appropriate amount made payable to ‘German Wine Society.’ Second\, in the alternative\, you can register for this event online and pay by PayPal. To register and pay online\, you will need to set up an account on the website and have signed up for PayPal as well before registering for this event. We cannot accept payments by other forms of credit. Please be sure\, in signing up\, to submit payment based on your current member or non-member status. If your dues year has expired and you want to register as a member\, please include a $35 dues payment (for an individual or couple) as well. All members and guests are reminded that alcohol consumption can lead to intoxication. Therefore Society members and their guests are expected to drink in moderation at Society events. It is advisable to provide designated drivers where available\, use Metro or other forms of public transportation\, or mostly to taste rather than consume alcohol when not using designated drivers or public transportation. Finally\, because we want all of our members and guests to enjoy this event in the greatest degree of safety possible under current health conditions\, we are requiring that everyone attending this event be fully vaccinated for covid-19. Please be prepared to show proof of vaccination when entering the event if requested. If you are requested to show such proof and cannot do so\, you may not be admitted. We also had this requirement for our River Cruise event in July of this year\, and given continuing heath concerns\, we consider it prudent to continue this precaution for this event as well. Please also note that Montgomery County does require masks again for indoor events when not eating and drinking\, so we request that you wear a mask when arriving and signing in. If you no longer wish to receive our announcements\, please contact the Secretary at the e-mail address indicated above. Please clip and return this registration form if registering by mail\, to the Secretary at the address listed above. Do not return the entire event notice. SUMMARY:GSW Summer Wine Cruise - July 10th\, 2021
DESCRIPTION:ANNOUNCING GERMAN WINE SOCIETY’S RETURN TO IN-PERSON EVENTS WITH WINE CRUISE! Get ready to cast off on the Potomac for a German wine cruise! Yes\, the Capital Chapter of the German Wine Society is resuming in-person events this summer. Our kick-off will be an experience we have missed for several years (though it was a regular event from 2010-2013 and earlier)\, the traditional GWS summer wine cruise past the beautiful river banks and monuments of our nation’s Capital\, passing Hains Point and the newly redeveloped Southwest Waterfront. Please join us to enjoy many wines from Germany and other countries as we cruise along the Potomac for two hours\, from 4 pm to 6 pm on Saturday\, July 10\, 2021. We will board Capitol River Cruises’ Nightingale II from the Georgetown waterfront\, at 3050 K Street N.W.\, Washington\, D.C. – the end of 31st Street\, by the Fiola Mare restaurant. Be sure to be on the wharf before departure time – the cruise boat cannot wait for late arrivals! We can accommodate only 45 guests on the Nightingale II for this event\, so reserve early to avoid disappointment. Reservations for this event are due by Tuesday\, July 6\, 2021\, to give us sufficient time to have enough wine for all aboard. Parking is readily available in garages along the Georgetown riverfront\, and it is possible to walk from Metro at the Foggy Bottom station as well. We will be providing all the wines for this event\, as well as disposable plastic glasses and cutlery\, paper plates and napkins. Guests should plan to bring their own food on board for greater safety\, though we may provide some surprise treats. This will be a relaxing cruise\, with no presentation\, allowing everyone to concentrate on the wines\, good company and atmosphere. There are many outdoor and indoor dining establishments along the Georgetown waterfront for dinner after the cruise\, which we encourage you to try. The Nightingale II is a boat we have used for some previous cruises\, and is all on one level\, with tables and chairs\, and a bar from which we can serve wines. The wines for our cruise will be a mixture of whites and reds\, mostly German but with some other international and U.S. wines included as well for variety – all with some German or Austrian grape connection. Get ready to savor some very special\, high-prädikat wines! We want to remind everyone of the lovely qualities of German wines we have missed sharing with each other in-person. Here’s the wine list we have planned: Welcome wines – nv Peter Lauer Riesling Sparkling Mosel or nv Dr. Loosen Riesling Sparkling Mosel 2018 Villa Wolf Pinot Gris or Gewürztraminer Pfalz 2017 Dr. Loosen Urziger Wurzgarten Riesling Mosel 2014 Otium Blaufränkisch\, United States 2015 Otium Gruner Veltliner\, United States 2012 Shelter Winery Spatburgunder\, Baden 2016 Clemens Busch von Roten Schiefer Riesling Mosel 2017 Bernkasteler Doctor Riesling Kabinett Mosel 2015 St. Christopher Piesporter Goldtropfchen Riesling Spatlese Mosel 2015 Max Ferd. Juffer Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese 2013 Siefried Nelson Sweet Riesling\, New Zealand Our event cost is $63 for members and $70 for non-member guests. You can easily register and pay for this event : (This event is fully booked.) You will need to set up a GWS account if you have not done so already for past events\, and have a Paypal account. You may also pay by check by following the instructions below. We are eagerly anticipating seeing all of you in person again for this comfortable afternoon on the Potomac! All GWS members and guests are reminded that alcohol consumption can lead to intoxication. Members and guests should rely on a designated driver\, and if one is not available\, drink in moderation\, tasting the wines rather than finishing them. We are very pleased that it has become safe enough to contemplate doing in-person events once again\, consistent with CDC guidelines and local D.C. health rules. For added security of our members\, however\, we request that you attend this event only if you have been fully vaccinated against covid-19. Hopefully\, by the fall\, vaccinations will be widespread enough that we will no longer need to insist on this for all in-person events\, but our country and region are not quite there yet\, and we want everyone to be able to feel secure in attending this special wine cruise. We have also been informed that the cruise company will ask our guests to wear masks when boarding and interacting with boat crew (the crew has also been vaccinated) but masks will not be required otherwise once everyone is aboard – a significant advantage of doing an outdoor event. ________________________________________________________________________ RESERVATION FORM for Saturday\, July 10\, 2021\, German Wine Society Wine Cruise Member(s) Name(s) ___________________________________________________ Guest(s) Names(s) _____________________________________________________ Total Enclosed ________________________ Daytime/ Cell Phone Number ___________ E-Mail _______________________________________________________________

SUMMARY:American Rieslings from New York State\, Zoom and Tasting Event - May 22\, 2021
DESCRIPTION:For our next event\, we are tasting American Rieslings from the State of New York\, visiting with Meaghan Frank of the Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery in the Finger Lakes. As you may know\, a number of wineries and winemakers in the Finger Lakes are known for producing a wide range of high-quality wines including sparkling wines and cool-climate Rieslings in all styles. The Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery is among the most prominent of these producers and was a pioneer in establishing this region. Our Vice President Christian Schiller has written about this winery in his wine blog\, and we have occasionally enjoyed its wines in our events\, but the GWS has never before focused on a specific Finger Lakes winery for a tasting. We will meet for our tasting via Zoom on Saturday\, May 22\, 2021 from 4 pm – 6 pm EST. The deadline to register for this event is Monday\, May 10\, 2021. Above all\, please plan ahead to purchase your wines directly from the winery. You may choose one of three packages\, as detailed below. These are offered at all-in prices including shipping charges and a generous 20% discount on the wines. Meaghan Frank\, Vice President and our presenter for this event\, is the fourth generation to run the winery. She is the great granddaughter of the winery’s founder\, Dr. Konstantin Frank. Meaghan is in charge of operations including winemaking\, staffing and export markets. Meaghan earned an MBA in wine business from the University of Adelaide\, Australia\, a Masters in enology from Cornell University in New York\, and the WSET Diploma. The third generation of the winery’s management also remains involved\, with significant ties to Germany. Frederick Frank\, President of the Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery\, took over from his father\, Willy Frank. Fred is a graduate of Cornell\, and attended the Geisenheim Research Institute for Viticulture and Enology in Germany. He oversees operations focused on production\, vineyards and national wholesale. Founder Dr. After some years\, he purchased land in the Finger Lakes. As the winery states\, “With decades of knowledge and experience\, Dr. Frank successfully planted the first European grape varieties in the Eastern United States in 1958.” Others thought the region was too cold for European varietals\, but he proved otherwise. The first vintage was released in 1962. Dr. Frank was then 63 years old. He went on to found the American Wine Society in 1967. In the book\, “Finger Lakes Wine and the Legacy of Dr. Konstantin Frank\,” published in 2015\, author Tom Russ refers to Dr. Frank as the “Father of Vinifera in the East” and writes that he “is remembered throughout the United States as a pioneer and advocate for vinifera grapes and quality wine.” This book may be purchased at www.Amazon.com. For more information on the winery\, including videos\, you may wish to visit the winery’s website at www.drfrankwines.com. Because we continue to operate in a virtual environment\, we have a different type of process to sign up for and participate in this tasting. The first step\, as usual\, is to register for the event\, either using our chapter website (https://germanwinesocietydc.org) and PayPal for payment\, or by completing and submitting the attached registration form and including a check made out to the German Wine Society. The price to participate in this event is modest\, just $10 per membership account (individual or couple) for members\, or $20 for non-members\, to contribute to our Zoom and other D.C. chapter expenses. You will need to have internet access to Zoom to participate in our tasting\, either downloaded on your computer or otherwise available through your browser. Everyone who registers by the deadline will receive a Zoom link on the day of the event from board member Karen Stokes. The next step is to choose your wines for the tasting. Meaghan Frank will present five (5) wines in three (3) rounds: two sparkling wines\, two still wines and one late-harvest wine\, all of which are Rieslings. You do not have to order all of the wines. Two of the packages contain three (3) bottles each\, one for each round\, whereas the last option is to order all five (5) of the wines: Package 1 (3 Bottle Pack – Dry and Dessert): Riesling Nature (2018)\, a dry sparkling vintage wine (zero g/L of residual sugar\, no dosage\, 11.7% abv) made in the traditional method;Dry Riesling (2019)\, classic style unoaked wine (8.5 g/L residual sugar\, 11.5% abv) (90 points Wine Advocate); andReserve Riesling (2020)\, a medium-sweet to sweet late-harvest\, Auslese-style wine\, unoaked (43 g/L residual sugar\, 11.3% abv).Package 2 (3 Bottle Pack – Sweet): Célèbre NV\, a medium-sweet non-vintage sparkling wine (30 g/L residual sugar\, 11.9% abv) made in the traditional method;Semi-Dry Riesling (2019)\, classic style unoaked wine (22 g/L residual sugar\, 11.5% abv) (90 points Wine Advocate); andReserve Riesling\, the same late-harvest wine as above.Package 3 (5 Bottle Pack): The two sparkling wines\, the two still Rieslings and the late-harvest wine. Link to packages for ordering: https://www.drfrankwines.com/germany-wine-society/ Please note that vintages could vary\, new vintages are not rated\, and while descriptions are believed accurate they are not guaranteed. Should you have any questions for the winery about your purchases or shipping\, please contact them directly. We have included the above link for ordering the wine packages for you to have these wines for the tasting and for your inventory. Those ordering for this GWS event will be entitled to the 20% discount we have arranged plus flat-rate shipping included. The winery will ship to Maryland\, Virginia and Washington\, D.C.\, and will also ship to other continental States at their discretion and subject to State regulations. Arrange your favorite appetizers\, including cheese and bread/crackers plus fruit such as apples\, and other dishes\, to accompany your wines\, and be ready to enjoy the tasting. Dr. Konstantin Frank’s Riesling wines range from dry to sweet\, or semi-sweet\, as indicated above\, and because of the choice of packages\, you have the opportunity to decide how dry or sweet you want your tasting to be. The winery suggests pairing the late-harvest wine with rich cheeses (e.g.\, Camembert or Stilton)\, spicy foods (e.g.\, Thai or Indian) and semi-sweet desserts. All correspondence in response to this email should be directed to our President and acting Secretary\, Carl Willner\, by email to carl.willner1@verizon.net\, or by mail at: Carl Willner 1014 Reserve Champion Drive Rockville\, MD 20850 If you will be making a payment online to register for the event\, or to pay membership dues ($35 per person or couple annually)\, please be sure to use PayPal\, as we cannot accept payment by other forms of credit. If you decide to register by mail\, please mail your registration to the Chapter Secretary at the above address\, with your check made out to the German Wine Society. All GWS members are reminded that alcohol consumption can lead to intoxication. Therefore\, Society members and their guests are expected to drink in moderation at Society events. Fortunately\, one of the benefits of holding an online event is that most of you will be safely at home and not driving to the event\, but should you decide to visit a friend in order to participate from there\, please bear in mind the usual cautions about having a designated driver where available\, or mostly tasting rather than consuming alcohol where such drivers are not available. All participants must be of legal age (21 years of age or older) to consume alcoholic beverages. Carl Willner President and Secretary\, German Wine Society Capital Chapter Please clip and return this registration form if registering by mail\, to the Secretary at the address listed above. Do not return the entire event notice. Reservation form for GERMAN WINE SOCIETY – DR. SUMMARY:Christian Stahl Zoom Tasting Event\, April 17th\, 2021
DESCRIPTION:Hopefully you enjoyed our celebration of Riesling last month in whatever way inspired you. Now let us SPRING FORWARD to our next Zoom event. Christian Stahl of Winzerhof Stahl in Franken\, Germany has graciously accepted an invitation from us to speak about his wines that are available in the DC area. Yes\, this is an actual Wine Tasting! Christian Stahl is happy to discuss any or all of his wines\, several of which will be available to purchase in advance and enjoy. We will meet for our tasting via Zoom on Saturday\, April 17\, 2021 from 5 pm -7 pm EST. This of course means Christian Stahl is doing our event at a very late hour in his time zone. Many thanks to him for going above and beyond for the German Wine Society. The deadline to register for this event is April 8\, 2021\, so as to enable everyone to get their wines for the tasting in time. Christian Stahl is no stranger to our Society\, having been hosted before in the United States by our Vice President Christian Schiller and discussed in his wine blog. You can find a complete list of the winemaker’s many accolades on his website\, winzerhof-stahl.de. Among other things\, Christian Stahl was named “2018 Winemaker of the Year” by renowned wine journalist Stuart Pigott in the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung\, and in 2013 the estate received its third grape from the GAULT MILLAU WEIN GUIDE. The Stahl 2018 Silvaner was winner at the Gourmetwelten Lagen-Cup. Because we are still operating in a virtual environment\, we have a different type of process to sign up for and participate in this tasting. The first step\, as usual\, is to register for the event and PayPal for payment: or by completing and submitting the attached registration form and including a check made out to the German Wine Society. The price to participate in this event is modest\, just $10 per membership account (individual or couple) for members\, or $20 for non-members\, to help cover our Zoom expenses. You will need to have access to Zoom to participate in our Stahl tasting\, either downloaded on your computer or otherwise available through your browser. Everyone who provides timely notification of their intent to come (by registering on the website or returning the form) will receive a Zoom link from board member Karen Stokes\, the organizer for this event\, by email prior to the event\, which can be used to log in at the start time. The next step will be to choose your wines for the tasting. There are several different wines that Christian Stahl will be discussing during the tasting\, including a Pinot Blanc\, Scheurebe\, Silvaner\, and Pinot Gris (all 2017 and priced at $19.99 each) and a Spark (Scheurebe and Riesling sparkling wine\, priced at $18.99)\, but you do not need to order all of them. We have attached a form to use for ordering any wines you would like to have for the tasting or for your inventory (different from the clip-off registration form). For three or four wines\, we have arranged a discount of 10%\, and for all five wines a discount of 15%. The order form should be emailed to Christopher Bartha\, the distributor for Stahl’s wines\, at ultraweins@gmail.com. Please be sure to reference in the subject line “German Wine Society – order for Winzerhof Stahl Wines.” Mr. Bartha will then contact you by email when the order is ready to be picked up at Chevy Chase Wine & Spirits\, located at 5544 Connecticut Avenue\, Washington\, DC. The final step is to visit Chevy Chase Wine & Spirits\, which you can contact at (202) 363-4000\, and pick up and pay for your wines in-store or curbside before the tasting (major credit cards accepted). Chevy Chase Wine & Spirits also has a delivery option for customers located within three miles of the store in D.C. (no Maryland or Virginia deliveries)\, for an additional $5 on purchases of $35 or more. If you cannot do pickup from the store and need to have wines shipped to you outside the store’s D.C. delivery area\, please submit your order to Christopher Bartha early\, letting him know you will need wines to be shipped to you and providing your home address. If possible\, he will try to arrange for shipment\, for which there will be an additional shipping charge\, on the order of $15 (but we cannot guarantee that timely shipment will be possible for all in this way). Mr. Bartha will determine how payment should be made in these situations. For all purchases\, whether in-store or delivered\, there will be an additional DC sales tax which should be 9% for alcohol purchases. Payment and pick-up information are also included on the order form itself. Choose your favorite cheeses\, breads\, crackers\, sweets and any other desired dishes to accompany your Stahl wines\, and be ready to enjoy the tasting! All correspondence in response to this email should be directed to our President and Secretary\, Carl Willner\, by email to carl.willner1@verizon.net\, or by mail at: Carl Willner 1014 Reserve Champion Drive Rockville\, MD 20850 ——————-Please clip and return this registration form if registering by mail\, to the Secretary at the address listed above. Do not return the entire event notice. Reservation form for GERMAN WINE SOCIETY CHRISTIAN STAHL TASTING EVENT\, SATURDAY\, APRIL 17\, 2021 Name (s) ____________________________________________________________________________ Member or non-Member ________________________________________________________________ Payment submitted ____________________________________________________________________ E-mail contact ________________________________________________________________________ Telephone contact _____________________________________________________________________WINZERHOF STAHL WINE TASTING Order Form:Your Name: _____________________________________Your Email address/Phone: ___________________________________________________________Deadline for wine orders: Thursday April 8th at 2 pm.To order wines\, please email your order to Christopher Bartha at: ultraweins@gmail.comUsing this subject line: Germain Wine Society-order for Winzerhof Stahl WinesChris will contact you via email when your order will be ready for pick-up at Chevy Chase Wine & Spirits.Wines for the Zoom event:2017 Pinot Blanc\, $19.99 2017 Scheurebe $19.992017 Silvaner $19.992017 Pinot Gris $19.99NV Scheurebe & Riesling Sparkling $18.99Please indicate how many bottles per wine category. If ordering more than 3-4 bottles\, 10% off. If ordering 5+ bottles\, 15% off. DC sales tax is 9%.You will pay for the wines and pick them up atChevy Chase Wine & Spirits\, 5544 Connecticut Ave.\, Washington D.C.(202)363-4000Store hours: Sun-Thurs: 10am to 9pm\, Fri & Sat: 10am to 10pmRestricted DC delivery at an additional $5.00 for purchases of $35.00 or more. SUMMARY:586th Birthday Celebration of Riesling Zoom Event\, March 13th\, 2021
DESCRIPTION:For lovers of German wine\, the Riesling grape is commonly one of our favorites\, and frequently the top choice. Versatile Riesling yields both wonderful high-prädikat sweet wines\, among the best in the world\, and high-quality dry wines as well. It is the most widely grown grape in about half of Germany’s wine regions. If you are wondering what the 586th birthday means\, please know that in March 2019 the Wines of Germany announced that from that day forward the official birthday of Riesling would be celebrated on March 13\, 1435. Why that day? An invoice with that date was found in a cellar invoice in Russelsheim and refers to a variety called Riesslingen (the spelling at the time)\, which marked the first written documentation of the Riesling grape. Due to the pandemic\, celebrations of the birthday are for the most part put on hold. BUT not for the German Wine Society’s Capital Chapter. We will hold an online Zoom celebration together on Saturday\, March 13\, 2021\, from 5 pm to 7 pm\, and party in our own homes…where you are guaranteed to enjoy the wines and foods on the menu. Choose your favorite Rieslings from your own collection or local wine store\, along with cheeses\, breads\, crackers\, sweets and any other desired dishes\, and be ready to discuss your choices! Please make reservations by Wednesday\, March 10\, using either our chapter website (https://germanwinesocietydc.org) and PayPal for payment if you owe dues or are a non-member\, or by completing and sending in the attached form\, enclosing a check if payment is required. This event is free for GWS members in good standing (that is\, current in $35 annual dues payments per individual or couple)\, but members still need to register so that we can have an accurate count of who is coming and can send the Zoom link to everyone signed up. For any non-members who wish to attend\, this event is modestly priced at $10 per Zoom connection (so that an individual or couple can register at the same price)\, payable online on our website using PayPal or by check\, to help cover our Zoom expenses. You will need to have access to Zoom to participate in our Riesling party\, either downloaded on your computer or otherwise available through your browser. Everyone who provides timely notification of their intent to come (by registering on the website or returning the form) will receive a Zoom link from board member Karen Stokes\, the organizer for this event\, by email prior to the event\, which can be used to log in at the start time. Will we have party guests? Yes\, of course. We have invited a few people to Zoom with us: Brent Kroll is Proprietor and Sommelier of Maxwell Park in Washington\, DC. Brent was named a 2018 Food & Wine Sommelier of the Year and he has been featured in Wine & Spirits\, Wine Enthusiast\, & Wine Spectator to name just a few magazines. Maxwell Park is a great wine bar with locations on 9th Street in DC and in the Navy Yard. If you have not checked out their website\, you should do that just to see the incredible bottle list of German wines that are enjoyed with their food menu. Brent can certainly talk to us about the why Rieslings pair so well with food. Valerie Kathawala is a writer and editor specializing in the wines of Germany\, Austria\, northern Italy\, and German Switzerland. She is a fan of “umlaut wines” and has joined the Wine Scholar Guild as an educator on German wines. Also check out Trink Magazine where she is co-founder and co-editor. Phil Bernstein\, our longtime friend from MacArthur Beverage\, will tease us a little with the New Vintages event from last year which had to be postponed to 2021 (fingers crossed). And he will give us a look ahead to the 2021 New Vintage wines which we also hope to schedule\, in person\, this year. Are there more surprises? Maybe? Just be sure to sign up for our March event. Party attire is welcomed. Birthday cake with lighted candles is optional. All correspondence in response to this email should be directed to our President and Secretary\, Carl Willner\, by email to carl.willner1@verizon.net\, or by mail at: Carl Willner 1014 Reserve Champion Drive Rockville\, MD 20850 If you are attending as a non-member or owe dues and need to make a payment online\, please be sure to have a PayPal account in advance\, as we cannot accept payment by other forms of credit. If you decide to register by mail\, please mail your registration to the Chapter Secretary at the above address\, and make out any check to the German Wine Society. Drinking in moderation will also help to avoid any mishaps using your computer! ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Please clip and return this registration form if registering by mail\, to the Secretary at the address listed above. Do not return the entire event notice. Reservation form for GERMAN WINE SOCIETY BIRTHDAY OF RIESLING EVENT\, SATURDAY\, MARCH 13\, 2021 Name (s) ____________________________________________________________________________ Member or non-Member ________________________________________________________________ Payment submitted ____________________________________________________________________ E-mail contact ________________________________________________________________________ Telephone contact _____________________________________________________________________

SUMMARY:2021 Capital Chapter Members Zoom Meeting - February 20th
DESCRIPTION:Prosit Neujahr! Online registration for the 2021 Capital Chapter Members Meeting is now open! Please make reservations by February 15. This year’s membership meeting will take place on Saturday\, February 20\, 2021\, starting at 5:00 pm EST. As with our Holiday Gathering in December 2020\, due to continuing health concerns\, the membership meeting this year will be held online\, using Zoom. The business portion of the meeting will be followed by the fun part – a multiple-choice quiz on knowledge of German wines for a wine prize from our cellar (to be delivered as soon as we can have in-person events again\, or by arrangement with the Cellarmaster for pickup). Of course\, as this is an online event\, members will supply their own choice of wines\, cheeses and other foods\, and there will be an opportunity to discuss your wine choices with other participants\, as we did during the Holiday Gathering. Members pay nothing for this tasting (but still need to register via our website or mail\, or by email to the Secretary\, so that we can have an accurate count of who is coming and can send the Zoom link to everyone); non-members pay $10 each\, through website registration using PayPal or by check. There will be a discussion of our finances\, membership and cellar status\, followed by an open discussion of plans for the future. What would you like to have the society do – what are your expectations? The Board needs to know! Members can vote in person at the meeting\, or by returning their written ballots by February 10\, 2020. Candidate statements and the ballot form (for those who will not be voting in person at the election but would still like to submit a vote) are attached to this notice in a separate document. Nominations of other candidates than those listed below and on the attached ballot must be received by no later than Friday\, February 5\, 2021\, under our bylaws\, so as to allow revised ballots for the election to be prepared and distributed. All of the candidates running have already been serving in their positions\, but we have one open Director position without a candidate\, due to the loss last year of our longtime member and friend Stephen Kent. The Chapter President is also running for Chapter Secretary\, in the absence of a separate candidate to fill the Secretary position; he was elected to serve in both capacities last year. The candidates running for positions on the Board this election are: Carl Willner – for Chapter President and Secretary (positions listed separately on ballot) Christian Schiller – for Chapter Vice President Ken Belsley – for Chapter Treasurer Maria So – for Director\, also serving as Webmaster Jim Palanchar – for Director Karen Stokes – for Director\, also serving as Cellarmaster Our bylaws do not permit nominations from the floor at the meeting for any position for which a candidate is already running\, but only in advance so that ballots for a disputed election can be prepared\, although floor nominations for uncontested positions are allowed. For this election\, all board positions except one Director slot have one candidate running. You can give back to the Chapter by volunteering to plan or help with a monthly tasting\, in addition to serving on the board. Your active participation in planning and managing events helps the organization grow – and to do so in the direction you choose. All correspondence in response to this email should be directed to our President and Secretary\, Carl Willner\, by email to carl.willner1@verizon.net or by mail at: Carl Willner 1014 Reserve Champion Drive Rockville\, MD 20850 If you are attending as a non-member and need to pay online\, please be sure to have a PayPal account in advance\, as we cannot accept payments by other forms of credit. If you decide to register by mail\, please mail your registration (and check if registering as a non-member) to the Chapter Secretary\, Carl Willner\, whose address is listed above. All GWS members and guests are reminded that alcohol consumption can lead to intoxication. Therefore Society members and their guests are expected to drink in moderation at Society events. SUMMARY:GWS Zoom Holiday Gathering - December 19th\, 2020
DESCRIPTION:ANNOUNCING GERMAN WINE SOCIETY CAPITAL CHAPTER ZOOM HOLIDAY GATHERING\, DECEMBER 19\, 2020 Ho\, Ho\, Ho\, German Wine Society Members and Friends of German Wines\, it’s nearly time to hang the stockings and dream of delicious German wine! This year\, as a necessary response to the pandemic situation\, we are for the first time conducting our annual Holiday event virtually\, via Zoom. We have acquired an annual Zoom subscription for our GWS chapter\, as some other wine groups have also been doing due to the restrictions on large in-person gatherings. You will need to have access to Zoom to participate\, either downloaded on your computer or otherwise usable via your browser. This will be a much more flexible event than our usual Holiday Dinners. Participants will choose their own favorite German wines and holiday foods to enjoy during the event. Dress as you prefer\, in festive attire\, holiday sweaters or casual – we do not have a Cosmos Club dress code to satisfy. We will still have one of the favorite features of the traditional Holiday Dinners\, though – festive live holiday music performed on the piano. After some introductory remarks\, an anticipated discussion of the 2020 vintage in Germany by Annette Schiller\, and the musical program (during which we will ask all guests to mute their own connections for maximum enjoyment by all)\, we will invite guests in turn to offer brief holiday greetings and remarks to the rest of the group. Though guests can pass on speaking if they prefer\, we want to be sure that everyone who would like to speak has a chance to do so. You will then be free to discuss with other guests the wines you are enjoying and experiences of the past year. And\, best of all\, there will be NO CHARGE for this virtual Holiday Gathering. We will\, however\, need to limit the event to members in good standing\, so please be sure that you are current on your annual dues when registering. The Holiday Gathering will begin at 5:00 pm EST on Saturday\, December 19\, and continue for about two hours. Those who register for the event\, whether through our website or by returning the registration form\, will receive an email with a link for the Zoom event. Board member Karen Stokes will be organizing our Zoom event. If you have questions about using Zoom\, please send them to me in advance at the email address below\, and I will forward them to her. The deadline for reservations is Monday\, December 14\, so that we can notify everyone in time of the information needed to participate. We’ve all missed seeing each other for the past several months\, and this is our last chance before the end of the year for the German Wine Society to share a convivial occasion. So please make your reservations right away and don’t miss out! There are now two ways to join in the fun. You can register for the event using PayPal (free with up-to-date membership). Event registration date has passed.Or\, you can submit a reservation for the event by mail to the Chapter President and Secretary\, with a check for any annual dues owed payable to the German Wine Society\, at the following address and using the form below. Please include names\, number of guests\, email (essential to participate in this virtual event!) and phone number. If you are not sure whether you are current on your dues\, please contact me and I will check chapter records. If you did not pay during 2020\, however\, please assume that a $35 dues payment will be owed\, as an individual or couple. Carl Willner 1014 Reserve Champion Drive Rockville\, MD 20850 I can be reached by email at carl.willner1@verizon.net\, or at 202-674-9044. Please contact me with any questions or correspondence in response to this notice. One of the pleasures of conducting a virtual event is that we do not need to have the same level of concern as usual about members and guests getting home safely\, such as using designated drivers (but do please keep those sensible precautions in mind if you are visiting a friend for this event rather than participating from your home). All Society Members and guests are nevertheless reminded that drinking alcohol can lead to intoxication\, and therefore Society members and their guests are expected to drink in moderation at Society events. Among other things\, that will help avoid any mishaps using your computer! If you no longer wish to receive our announcements\, please reply to this email to me as chapter Secretary and let me know. If registering by mail\, please cut and return the reservation form portion of the notice below – do not mail the entire notice. Carl Willner

SUMMARY:German Wine Tasting and Dinner at Old Europe Restaurant (November 2\, 2019)
DESCRIPTION:”Beyond Riesling: Germany’s Other White Wines” If you stroll through the German section at most local wine purveyors\, you will be surrounded by Riesling after Riesling on the shelves. In many of these stores\, you will find nothing but Rieslings. Yet Germany produces many fine white wines in addition to Riesling\, wines that amply repay the effort to seek them out. According to the “Wines of Germany” website\, 64.5% of Germany’s vineyards are dedicated to producing white wines\, yet only about 23-24% of this is Riesling – the other whites represent more than 40% of Germany’s grapes planted. While some German wine regions\, such as the Mosel\, Rheingau\, and Mittelrhein\, are famously dominated by Riesling\, others\, including the Pfalz\, Rheinhessen\, and Nahe\, offer a much wider diversity of whites. We have done the hard part and collected a wide-ranging sample of non-Riesling white wines from across Germany for you to sample in this “Anything but Riesling” tasting\, along with a dinner featuring seasonal German foods. Old Europe\, Washington’s premier German restaurant\, is once again the venue for our event. Our Riesling-free German wine evening will begin on Saturday\, November 2\, 2019 at 7 pm for signing in\, with tasting and the dinner beginning at 7:30 pm. The restaurant is located at 2434 Wisconsin Avenue NW\, Washington\, D.C. 20007. The event will take place on the lower level of Old Europe in the Rathskeller room – go down the stairs after entering the restaurant. Parking is available on the side street behind the restaurant. There will be a welcoming drink of sparkling wine\, and five flights of wines accompanying the three course buffet dinner (starters\, main course and sides\, and desserts). The twelve wines represent almost all of the major white varieties other than Riesling\, including Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc)\, Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris)\, Sylvaner\, Müller-Thurgau\, Scheurebe\, Gewürztraminer\, Rieslaner\, and Huxelrebe\, and also include two wines from neighboring Alsace in France\, where wines using German varieties of grape produce different tastes and aromas. DESCRIPTION:ANNOUNCING GERMAN WINE SOCIETY OKTOBER WEINFEST IN THE MAGNIFICENT MOSEL! “Tasting a superlative Moselle can be an aesthetic experience no less genuine than hearing a Mozart concerto well played\, or seeing for the first time one of Breughel’s paintings.” Frank Schoonmaker\, The Wines of Germany (1956). This year the German Wine Society will celebrate its annual Oktober Weinfest by savoring the wonderful wines of the Mosel. This wine region has long been famed for its outstanding Rieslings\, grown in the slate of steep-sided vineyards lining the winding river banks. Here are found many of the best-known vineyards and producers in all of Germany\, and in this tasting\, accompanied by an Oktoberfest meal\, you will have the opportunity to sample a wide variety of the best the Mosel has to offer. We will gather on Saturday\, October 5 starting at 3 pm for sign-in\, with the event beginning at 3:30 pm\, at the Harbour Square clubroom\, 500 N Street\, SW\, Washington\, DC. Our member Marilyn Scarborough has reserved a few parking spaces\, but we cannot guarantee parking for all. The Waterfront Metro Station (Green Line) is also within walking distance nearby. SUMMARY:Summer Field Trip to Otium Cellars (August 17th\, 2019)
DESCRIPTION:Get ready for a summer field trip! The Capital Chapter of the German Wine Society is making another visit to Otium Cellars in beautiful Loudoun County. Members may recall our summer visits there in 2016 and 2017\, and our own Christian Schiller wrote about this estate in his wine blog in 2012. The German owner of Otium Cellars\, Gerhard Bauer\, specializes in German/Austrian varietals that grow well in Virginia including Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris)\, Grüner Veltliner\, Dornfelder and Blaufränkisch (Lemberger). Dr. Bauer came to the United States in 1993 and began planting vines in 2007\, following old Franconian traditions\, with the winery open since 2012 and 55 acres now under cultivation. His son Max Bauer has aided in managing the estate. We will enjoy wines produced from Otium’s four German and Austrian grapes\, as well as five other varietals produced by Otium. This is a very picturesque vineyard\, with an on-site equestrian facility that breeds world class Hanoverian horses\, and a working farm with pigs\, chickens and ducks. Perfect for aromatic lighter weight summer wine tasting! Our tasting will take place in the atmospheric Bavarian Room\, as with our previous events at Otium. As part of this very special event\, visitors will have the opportunity to tour the vineyard followed by a narrated educational tasting of 9 Otium wines (4 white\, 5 red) in three flights with a delicious BBQ lunch\, ideal for late summer. The wines offered will be as follows: 2016 Pinot Gris 2016 Grüner Veltliner 2016 Chardonnay 2015 Chardonnay Reserve 2014 Merlot 2015 Malbec Reserve 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 Dornfelder Gerinne Rouge 2014 Blaufränkisch Reserve The BBQ buffet style lunch prepared by Monk’s BBQ will include: Three different types of Monk’s BBQ meats: Smoked Beef Brisket\, Smoked Dry Rub Chicken Leg Quarters\, Grilled Maple Glazed Pork Loin\, with Monk’s BBQ sauce choices Seasonal Salad: mixed field greens with seasonal additions of vegetables and cheese\, balsamic vinaigrette Custard Filled Cornbread Three side dishes: Grilled Seasonal Vegetables\, Herb Roasted Potato Wedges\, Roasted Brussels Sprouts with Crispy Bacon and Lemon Aioli Dessert: Fruit Crisp (seasonal fruit)\, with Rum Caramel and Vanilla Whipped Cream Otium Cellars\, in Loudoun County\, is located at 18050 Tranquility Rd\, Purcellville\, VA 20132. The doors will open at 7:00 and we begin discussing business (of course mixed with a little fun) promptly at 7:30 pm. For this year’s Members Meeting\, we are returning to the Van Ness Room at: 3001 Veazey Terrace NWWashington\, DC 20008 Metro is very accessible from the Van Ness stop on the Red Line. Members pay nothing for this tasting (but still need to register via our website or mail so that we can have an accurate count of who is coming and bring wines and food accordingly); non-members pay $15 each. We will sample a wide variety of wines from our cellar and also have our traditional quiz game and cheeses and bread. There will be a discussion of our finances\, membership and cellar status\, followed by an open discussion of plans for the future. What would you like to have the society do – what are your expectations? The Board needs to know!It is at this annual meeting we elect new officers and directors to the chapter Board. Only members in good standing\, with annual dues payments current\, are entitled to vote in the election or to attend this event free of charge; dues payments may be made online or by check to ensure that you are current before the meeting. Nominations of other candidates than those listed on the attached ballot must be received by no later than Friday\, January 25\, 2019. We do have two director positions and one officer position\, the Chapter Secretary\, opening up for new candidates this election cycle (should no candidate run for Secretary\, the Board has determined that the President will also serve as Acting Secretary until a suitable candidate is available to take over this necessary position). Our bylaws do not permit nominations from the floor at the meeting for any position for which a candidate is already running\, but only in advance so that ballots for a disputed election can be prepared\, although floor nominations for uncontested positions are allowed. Please consider giving back to the Chapter by serving on the board or by volunteering to plan a monthly tasting. Your active participation in planning and managing events help the organization grow – and to do so in the direction you choose. Members can vote in person at the meeting\, or by returning their written ballots by February 4\, 2019.Members: FREENon-members: $15Register for this Event click here

SUMMARY:Renaissance of the Terroir in Germany: Back to the Roots (January 18th\, 2019\, 7:00p.m.-10:00p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:“Location\, Location\, Location” That’s the most important requirement for making a good wine. This seminar and tasting by our own Annette Schiller will emphasize the utter importance of ‘location’\, i.e. terroir\, in the German wine landscape. Before the 1970s German vineyard maps showed 35\,000 single vineyard sites. These maps go back to the mid -1800s when the Prussian Government did extensive research on soil compositions and geological formations in the vineyards. The oldest wine classification map of the world is that of the Rheingau\, by Friedrich Wilhelm Dunkelberg in 1867. The philosophy behind producing top quality wines was clearly terroir driven: good soils plus a good microclimate made for good fruit\, and hence good wines. From the late 19th century until shortly before WW II wines of specific German vineyards\, such as Erbacher Marcobrunn\, were the most expensive wines world-wide. Prices were higher than for wines from the most expensive Bordeaux first growth châteaux and a Romanée Conti. The wine law of 1971 abolished the traditional\, historic terroir thinking\, merged vineyard sites\, and reduced the number of single vineyards to 5\,000. With a more sophisticated\, very educated vintner generation\, the idea to produce top quality wines and to bring German wines back into the first row took hold. It was in the late 1980s when the movement to return to history started and the focus shifted to the vineyard sites. Beginning in 2002 the VDP (Association of Premium German Wine Estates) worked to introduce a terroir-driven classification based on historic vineyard maps modeled after the Burgundy classification. Annette will present 12 wines – and an additional very special one – to showcase the philosophy of terroir-driven wine making in Germany. Annette Schiller is well known to the GWS community through previous wine tastings and her ombiasy wine tours to Bordeaux\, Burgundy\, Rhône\, and Germany. She has visited all of the estates she will present on personal occasions or on one of her tours and has intimate knowledge of these producers and the wines. SUMMARY:Carl Ehrhard Tasting with Maxwell Hessman Event (Nov. 9th\, 2018)
DESCRIPTION:Our next event of this fall is a tasting of German wines\, primarily from the Carl Ehrhard winery in the Rheingau\, but also including wines from St. Christopher in the Mosel and Josef Drathen in the Rheinhessen\, presented by Maxwell Hessman. The tasting will take place on Friday\, November 9 at 7:30 pm\, with the doors opening at 7 pm for registration. Please make reservations by November 6. The price for this tasting is a very reasonable $35 for members\, and $42 for non-member guests. For this tasting\, we are returning to the Van Ness Room at: 3001 Veazey Terrace NW Washington\, DC 20008 Metro is very accessible from the Van Ness stop on the Red Line. When you enter the apartment building\, go from the lobby (located on the 5th floor) down the elevator to the 2nd floor to the Van Ness Room. It is our pleasure with this tasting to introduce the wines of Carl Ehrhard to the members of the German Wine Society. Carl Ehrhard and his family tend 22 acres of Riesling and Pinot Noir across six prime vineyards — Berg Rottland\, Berg Roseneck\, Bischofsberg\, Kirchenpfad\, Klosterberg and Klosterlay — around the famous wine town of Rüdesheim in the Rheingau wine region of Germany. The estate\, founded in 1815\, was taken over by Carl and his wife Petra in 1998. Carl Ehrhard embraces traditional methods of production\, fermentation taking place naturally without the addition of yeasts\, and the vineyards are maintained without the use of fertilizers or herbicides. Fermentation takes place in a mixture of large neutral oak casks and stainless steel tanks. These precise\, powerful wines are lively and fresh in youth and develop depth and character while maintaining clarity as they age. In the 2017 Eichelmann wine guide\, the most prestigious in Germany\, Carl Ehrhard was distinguished as the “Aufsteiger des Jahres”\, meaning “Climber” or “Rising Star.” Only one winery each year is chosen for this distinction. We will round out the tasting with wines from two other German wine producers\, St. Christopher and Josef Drathen\, for comparison\, including a Kabinett\, Spatlese and Auslese\, for a total of ten wines. The St. Christopher label has been offering German wines from a variety of prestigious Mosel vineyards such as Piesporter Goldtröpfchen\, as well as entry-level and spiced holiday wine\, since 1992. These wines have received a number of positive reviews in Wine Enthusiast\, and are very reasonably priced. The Drathen winery has been in the family possession for over 100 years; the family forefathers originated from the Netherlands\, making their way to Germany on the Rhine River. The Peter Josef Drathen winery was founded in 1860 with its home in St. Aldegund and was renamed in 1927 as the Josef Drathen winery through settlement of the estate. In 1993 they expanded to a modern winemaking facility in Zell-Barl. Wines Tasted: Carl Ehrhard – Rheingau Pinot Noir Sekt Brut 2014 – rated 90 WE Pinot Noir Blanc De Noir 2017 – rated 87 WE in 2014 Pinot Noir Rose 2017 Spatburgunder Rüdesheim Berg Roseneck 2015 – rated 90 WE in 2013 Riesling Rudesheim Berg Roseneck Kabinett 2017 – rated 90 WE 2015 Riesling Rudesheim Kabinett Feinherb 2015 – rated 90 WE St Christopher – Mosel\, also Rheinhessen Qualitätswein Gewürztraminer 2016 – rated 87 WE Goldtröpfchen Riesling Kabinett 2017 – rated 89 WE 2016 Goldtröpfchen Riesling Spätlese 2016 – rated 89 WE Josef Drathen – Rheinhessen Rheinhessen Riesling Auslese 2015 There will be an opportunity to place orders for these wines (just in time for the holidays!) through Maxwell Hessman\, for later pickup at Metro Wines and Spirits in Adams Morgan. DESCRIPTION:We will once again be at the beautiful Embassy of Luxembourg in Washington\, D.C. for our next tasting on Friday\, September 28\, 2018 at 7 pm (with guests admitted for registration starting at 6:30 pm). The tasting will conclude at 9 pm. Many of you will remember our very successful events at the Embassy of Luxembourg in 2011\, 2013\, and 2016\, and this provides us with another exciting opportunity to try the varied wines of the “other Mosel\,” the Moselle River in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Our host for this evening will be Ambassador Sylvie Lucas\, and in preparing for this event we have worked closely with Consul Stan Myck\, who has aided us in obtaining all these wonderful Luxembourg wines. We will offer a very extensive selection of twenty-two wines from Luxembourg for this event\, including the wines of both of Luxembourg’s largest producers\, the Domaines Vinsmoselle cooperative and Bernard-Massard\, and one wine from the Domaine de l’Etat and one Rosé supplied by the Embassy and not available for public sale\, but served only at diplomatic and other government functions. Most of the wines from Luxembourg are white\, and tend to be dry\, but we have also been able to include a few red and rosé wines. During the latter part of the evening\, we will serve several of the sweeter “specialty wines” from Luxembourg\, such as Vin Moelleux (mellow or medium-sweet wine)\, Vendange Tardive (late harvest)\, Vin de Glace (ice wine) and Vin de Paille (straw wine)\, which are produced in very limited quantities and rarely exported – but you can enjoy them now on the territory of the Grand Duchy through the German Wine Society without having to make a trip to Europe! Lovers of the high-praedikat wines from the producers of the Mosel in Germany will find these specialty wines a fascinating comparison. Wines for this event will include: Embassy wines: Welcoming glass: Caves Bernard-Massard\, Cuvée de l’Ecusson\, Brut Crémant Domaine de l’Etat\, Côteaux de Remich\, Grand Premier Cru\, Riesling\, 2014 Schram & Fils\, Côtes de Wellenstein\, Gris de Pinot Gris (rosé)\, 2014 Domaines Vinsmoselle Wines: Cuvée Millésimée\, Brut Crémant\, 2013 “Spirit of Schengen”\, Pinot Noir\, Brut Crémant Greiveldange Herrenberg\, Grand Premier Cru\, Auxerrois\, 2016 Stadtbredimus Rousenberg\, Grand Premier Cru\, Pinot Blanc\, 2016 Wormeldange Mohrberg\, Grand Premier Cru\, Pinot Gris\, 2016 Wormeldange Weinbour\, Grand Premier Cru\, Riesling\, 2016 Machtum Gollebour\, Grand Premier Cru\, Gewürztraminer\, 2016 Vin Rosé\, Appellation d’Origine Protégée\, Elbling\, 2016 Château Edmond de la Fontaine\, Cuvée Réserve élevée en barrique\, Pinot Noir\, 2014 Vieilles Vignes\, Grand Premier Cru\, Riesling\, 2015 Caves Bernard-Massard Wines: Grand Premier Cru\, Riesling\, 2013 Grand Premier Cru\, Pinot Gris\, 2014 Grand Premier Cru\, Auxerrois\, 2014 Vin de Qualité\, Rivaner\, 2014 Domaines Vinsmoselle “Specialty” Wines: Vin Moelleux\, Grand Premier Cru\, Gewürztraminer\, 2016 Vendange Tardive\, Grand Premier Cru\, Pinot Gris\, 2015 Vin de Paille\, Grand Premier Cru\, Auxerrois\, 2015 Vin de Paille\, Grand Premier Cru\, Gewürztraminer\, 2015 Vin de Glace\, Grand Premier Cru\, Riesling\, 2016 And throughout the evening\, the Embassy will be serving hors d’oeuvres and amuse-bouches\, as well as desserts prepared by the Embassy’s French chef to accompany the wines. The price for this event is $72 for members\, and $80 for non-member guests. Registration will be limited to 60 guests\, so register early to avoid disappointment. You can register and pay for this event in either of two ways. You can register on our website (germanwinesocietydc.org) and make payment by Paypal. You will need to set up a GWS account if you have not done so already for past events\, and have a Paypal account. You can also pay by check\, made out to the German Wine Society\, and mailed to the GWS Secretary\, Joseph Aguiar\, at 1130 45th Place SE\, Washington\, DC 20019\, along with the completed form below. The deadline to register for this event is September 25\, 2018\, as we must provide a list of guests to the Embassy for security reasons several days in advance of the event. There will be no admissions at the door for those who have not registered in advance. \nRegister for this Event click hereThe Embassy of Luxembourg is located at 2200 Massachusetts Avenue\, N.W.\, Washington\, D.C. 20008\, within easy walking distance of the Dupont Circle Red Line Metro station. Street parking in the area is limited\, so planning to arrive by Metro is likely to be easiest. All GWS members and guests are reminded that alcohol consumption can lead to intoxication\, and therefore Society members and their guests are expected to drink in moderation at Society events. Members and guests should use public transportation\, rely on a designated driver\, or mostly taste the wines rather than finish them when such drivers or alternative modes of transportation are not available. The coordinator for this event is GWS Capital Chapter\, President Carl Willner\, who can be reached at 202-674-9044\, or at carl.willner1@verizon.net .

SUMMARY:Abbey Wines Tasting
DESCRIPTION:Dear German Wine Society Members and Guests\,You are in for a very special treat: “Abbey Wines”.This tasting (and seminar) by our own Annette Schiller will show the decisive impact themonasteries and the monks starting in medieval times had on developing viticulturalknowledge in Germany and elsewhere.Annette Schiller is well known to the GWS community through previous wine tastings andher ombiasy wine tours to Bordeaux\, Burgundy and Germany. She has visited almost all ofthe estates she will present on one or more of her tours and has intimate knowledge ofthese producers.Annette will present 12 wines – 8 from Germany\, 2 from France\, 1 from Austria\, 1 fromItaly (Alto Aldige) – that are still produced in monasteries. Some monasteries have beensecularized and taken over by government entities\, some are now in private hands\, othersare still today run by monks or sisters. The highlight will be the Grand Cru Clos de Vougeotfrom the Côte d'Or which retails for about US$ 180. In 1336 the monks of Cîteaux –owners of the vineyard site Clos de Vougeot – were the first to notice that different plotsgave different wines and therefore laid the earliest foundation of the vineyard classificationsystem. The monasteries were always a center of intellectual curiosity and thirst for knowledge. The monasteries had huge holdings on farmland and vineyards – mostly gifts of richaristocrats who at the end of their lives thought to buy a stairway to heaven. The monkshad to work in agriculture to sustain their living. Therefore the monks not only focused onreligious studies but also on studying better methods in farming and viticulture. The monkswere also instrumental in spreading the art of viticulture to other parts of Europe byestablishing daughter monasteries all over Europe. Without their work viticulture would nothave developed the way it did and would not have become a part of fine living as we knowit today throughout the world. The wines:01) 2015 Bermatinger Spätburgunder\, Markgraf von Baden\, Bodensee\, Baden02) 2015 Clos de Vougeot\, Pinot Noir\, Grand Cru\, Burgundy\, France03) NV Crémant\, Brut\, von Hövel\, Mosel04) 2017 Grauburgunder\, Klosterhof Töplitz\, Brandenburg\, Saale-Unstrut05) 2015 Saalhäuser Pinot-Blanc\, Kloster Pforta\, Saale-Unstrut06) 2016 Eisacktaler Sylvaner\, Kloster Neustift\, Alto Aldige\, Italy07) 2016 Grüner Veltliner\, Stift Klosterneuburg\, Wachau\, Austria08) 2016 Riesling\, Abtei Sankt Hildegard\, Rheingau09) 2016 Riesling\, Weingut Liebfrauenstift\, Rheinhessen10) 2016 Steinberger\, Riesling\, Kloster Eberbach\, Rheingau11) 2016 Riesling\, Réserve\, Domaine Weinbach\, Alsace\, France12) 2014 Riesling Goldtröpfchen GG\, Reichsgraf Von Kesselstatt\, MoselDATE: Friday\, April 20th\, Doors open at 7:00 pm; tasting begins at 7:30 pm.
