The doors will open at 7:00 and we begin discussing business (of course mixed with a little fun) promptly at 7:30 pm. For this year’s Members Meeting\, we are returning to the Van Ness Room at: 3001 Veazey Terrace NWWashington\, DC 20008 Metro is very accessible from the Van Ness stop on the Red Line. Members pay nothing for this tasting (but still need to register via our website or mail so that we can have an accurate count of who is coming and bring wines and food accordingly); non-members pay $15 each. We will sample a wide variety of wines from our cellar and also have our traditional quiz game and cheeses and bread. There will be a discussion of our finances\, membership and cellar status\, followed by an open discussion of plans for the future. What would you like to have the society do – what are your expectations? The Board needs to know!It is at this annual meeting we elect new officers and directors to the chapter Board. Only members in good standing\, with annual dues payments current\, are entitled to vote in the election or to attend this event free of charge; dues payments may be made online or by check to ensure that you are current before the meeting. Nominations of other candidates than those listed on the attached ballot must be received by no later than Friday\, January 25\, 2019. We do have two director positions and one officer position\, the Chapter Secretary\, opening up for new candidates this election cycle (should no candidate run for Secretary\, the Board has determined that the President will also serve as Acting Secretary until a suitable candidate is available to take over this necessary position). Our bylaws do not permit nominations from the floor at the meeting for any position for which a candidate is already running\, but only in advance so that ballots for a disputed election can be prepared\, although floor nominations for uncontested positions are allowed. Please consider giving back to the Chapter by serving on the board or by volunteering to plan a monthly tasting. Your active participation in planning and managing events help the organization grow – and to do so in the direction you choose. Members can vote in person at the meeting\, or by returning their written ballots by February 4\, 2019.Members: FREENon-members: $15Register for this Event click here

SUMMARY:Renaissance of the Terroir in Germany: Back to the Roots (January 18th\, 2019\, 7:00p.m.-10:00p.m.)
DESCRIPTION:“Location\, Location\, Location” That’s the most important requirement for making a good wine. This seminar and tasting by our own Annette Schiller will emphasize the utter importance of ‘location’\, i.e. terroir\, in the German wine landscape. Before the 1970s German vineyard maps showed 35\,000 single vineyard sites. These maps go back to the mid -1800s when the Prussian Government did extensive research on soil compositions and geological formations in the vineyards. The oldest wine classification map of the world is that of the Rheingau\, by Friedrich Wilhelm Dunkelberg in 1867. The philosophy behind producing top quality wines was clearly terroir driven: good soils plus a good microclimate made for good fruit\, and hence good wines. From the late 19th century until shortly before WW II wines of specific German vineyards\, such as Erbacher Marcobrunn\, were the most expensive wines world-wide. Prices were higher than for wines from the most expensive Bordeaux first growth châteaux and a Romanée Conti. The wine law of 1971 abolished the traditional\, historic terroir thinking\, merged vineyard sites\, and reduced the number of single vineyards to 5\,000. With a more sophisticated\, very educated vintner generation\, the idea to produce top quality wines and to bring German wines back into the first row took hold. It was in the late 1980s when the movement to return to history started and the focus shifted to the vineyard sites. Beginning in 2002 the VDP (Association of Premium German Wine Estates) worked to introduce a terroir-driven classification based on historic vineyard maps modeled after the Burgundy classification. Annette will present 12 wines – and an additional very special one – to showcase the philosophy of terroir-driven wine making in Germany. Annette Schiller is well known to the GWS community through previous wine tastings and her ombiasy wine tours to Bordeaux\, Burgundy\, Rhône\, and Germany. She has visited all of the estates she will present on personal occasions or on one of her tours and has intimate knowledge of these producers and the wines. SUMMARY:Carl Ehrhard Tasting with Maxwell Hessman Event (Nov. 9th\, 2018)
DESCRIPTION:Our next event of this fall is a tasting of German wines\, primarily from the Carl Ehrhard winery in the Rheingau\, but also including wines from St. Christopher in the Mosel and Josef Drathen in the Rheinhessen\, presented by Maxwell Hessman. The tasting will take place on Friday\, November 9 at 7:30 pm\, with the doors opening at 7 pm for registration. Please make reservations by November 6. The price for this tasting is a very reasonable $35 for members\, and $42 for non-member guests. For this tasting\, we are returning to the Van Ness Room at: 3001 Veazey Terrace NW Washington\, DC 20008 Metro is very accessible from the Van Ness stop on the Red Line. When you enter the apartment building\, go from the lobby (located on the 5th floor) down the elevator to the 2nd floor to the Van Ness Room. It is our pleasure with this tasting to introduce the wines of Carl Ehrhard to the members of the German Wine Society. Carl Ehrhard and his family tend 22 acres of Riesling and Pinot Noir across six prime vineyards — Berg Rottland\, Berg Roseneck\, Bischofsberg\, Kirchenpfad\, Klosterberg and Klosterlay — around the famous wine town of Rüdesheim in the Rheingau wine region of Germany. The estate\, founded in 1815\, was taken over by Carl and his wife Petra in 1998. Carl Ehrhard embraces traditional methods of production\, fermentation taking place naturally without the addition of yeasts\, and the vineyards are maintained without the use of fertilizers or herbicides. Fermentation takes place in a mixture of large neutral oak casks and stainless steel tanks. These precise\, powerful wines are lively and fresh in youth and develop depth and character while maintaining clarity as they age. In the 2017 Eichelmann wine guide\, the most prestigious in Germany\, Carl Ehrhard was distinguished as the “Aufsteiger des Jahres”\, meaning “Climber” or “Rising Star.” Only one winery each year is chosen for this distinction. We will round out the tasting with wines from two other German wine producers\, St. Christopher and Josef Drathen\, for comparison\, including a Kabinett\, Spatlese and Auslese\, for a total of ten wines. The St. Christopher label has been offering German wines from a variety of prestigious Mosel vineyards such as Piesporter Goldtröpfchen\, as well as entry-level and spiced holiday wine\, since 1992. These wines have received a number of positive reviews in Wine Enthusiast\, and are very reasonably priced. The Drathen winery has been in the family possession for over 100 years; the family forefathers originated from the Netherlands\, making their way to Germany on the Rhine River. The Peter Josef Drathen winery was founded in 1860 with its home in St. Aldegund and was renamed in 1927 as the Josef Drathen winery through settlement of the estate. In 1993 they expanded to a modern winemaking facility in Zell-Barl. Wines Tasted: Carl Ehrhard – Rheingau Pinot Noir Sekt Brut 2014 – rated 90 WE Pinot Noir Blanc De Noir 2017 – rated 87 WE in 2014 Pinot Noir Rose 2017 Spatburgunder Rüdesheim Berg Roseneck 2015 – rated 90 WE in 2013 Riesling Rudesheim Berg Roseneck Kabinett 2017 – rated 90 WE 2015 Riesling Rudesheim Kabinett Feinherb 2015 – rated 90 WE St Christopher – Mosel\, also Rheinhessen Qualitätswein Gewürztraminer 2016 – rated 87 WE Goldtröpfchen Riesling Kabinett 2017 – rated 89 WE 2016 Goldtröpfchen Riesling Spätlese 2016 – rated 89 WE Josef Drathen – Rheinhessen Rheinhessen Riesling Auslese 2015 There will be an opportunity to place orders for these wines (just in time for the holidays!) through Maxwell Hessman\, for later pickup at Metro Wines and Spirits in Adams Morgan. DESCRIPTION:We will once again be at the beautiful Embassy of Luxembourg in Washington\, D.C. for our next tasting on Friday\, September 28\, 2018 at 7 pm (with guests admitted for registration starting at 6:30 pm). The tasting will conclude at 9 pm. Many of you will remember our very successful events at the Embassy of Luxembourg in 2011\, 2013\, and 2016\, and this provides us with another exciting opportunity to try the varied wines of the “other Mosel\,” the Moselle River in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Our host for this evening will be Ambassador Sylvie Lucas\, and in preparing for this event we have worked closely with Consul Stan Myck\, who has aided us in obtaining all these wonderful Luxembourg wines. We will offer a very extensive selection of twenty-two wines from Luxembourg for this event\, including the wines of both of Luxembourg’s largest producers\, the Domaines Vinsmoselle cooperative and Bernard-Massard\, and one wine from the Domaine de l’Etat and one Rosé supplied by the Embassy and not available for public sale\, but served only at diplomatic and other government functions. Most of the wines from Luxembourg are white\, and tend to be dry\, but we have also been able to include a few red and rosé wines. During the latter part of the evening\, we will serve several of the sweeter “specialty wines” from Luxembourg\, such as Vin Moelleux (mellow or medium-sweet wine)\, Vendange Tardive (late harvest)\, Vin de Glace (ice wine) and Vin de Paille (straw wine)\, which are produced in very limited quantities and rarely exported – but you can enjoy them now on the territory of the Grand Duchy through the German Wine Society without having to make a trip to Europe! Lovers of the high-praedikat wines from the producers of the Mosel in Germany will find these specialty wines a fascinating comparison. Wines for this event will include: Embassy wines: Welcoming glass: Caves Bernard-Massard\, Cuvée de l’Ecusson\, Brut Crémant Domaine de l’Etat\, Côteaux de Remich\, Grand Premier Cru\, Riesling\, 2014 Schram & Fils\, Côtes de Wellenstein\, Gris de Pinot Gris (rosé)\, 2014 Domaines Vinsmoselle Wines: Cuvée Millésimée\, Brut Crémant\, 2013 “Spirit of Schengen”\, Pinot Noir\, Brut Crémant Greiveldange Herrenberg\, Grand Premier Cru\, Auxerrois\, 2016 Stadtbredimus Rousenberg\, Grand Premier Cru\, Pinot Blanc\, 2016 Wormeldange Mohrberg\, Grand Premier Cru\, Pinot Gris\, 2016 Wormeldange Weinbour\, Grand Premier Cru\, Riesling\, 2016 Machtum Gollebour\, Grand Premier Cru\, Gewürztraminer\, 2016 Vin Rosé\, Appellation d’Origine Protégée\, Elbling\, 2016 Château Edmond de la Fontaine\, Cuvée Réserve élevée en barrique\, Pinot Noir\, 2014 Vieilles Vignes\, Grand Premier Cru\, Riesling\, 2015 Caves Bernard-Massard Wines: Grand Premier Cru\, Riesling\, 2013 Grand Premier Cru\, Pinot Gris\, 2014 Grand Premier Cru\, Auxerrois\, 2014 Vin de Qualité\, Rivaner\, 2014 Domaines Vinsmoselle “Specialty” Wines: Vin Moelleux\, Grand Premier Cru\, Gewürztraminer\, 2016 Vendange Tardive\, Grand Premier Cru\, Pinot Gris\, 2015 Vin de Paille\, Grand Premier Cru\, Auxerrois\, 2015 Vin de Paille\, Grand Premier Cru\, Gewürztraminer\, 2015 Vin de Glace\, Grand Premier Cru\, Riesling\, 2016 And throughout the evening\, the Embassy will be serving hors d’oeuvres and amuse-bouches\, as well as desserts prepared by the Embassy’s French chef to accompany the wines. The price for this event is $72 for members\, and $80 for non-member guests. Registration will be limited to 60 guests\, so register early to avoid disappointment. You can register and pay for this event in either of two ways. You can register on our website (germanwinesocietydc.org) and make payment by Paypal. You will need to set up a GWS account if you have not done so already for past events\, and have a Paypal account. You can also pay by check\, made out to the German Wine Society\, and mailed to the GWS Secretary\, Joseph Aguiar\, at 1130 45th Place SE\, Washington\, DC 20019\, along with the completed form below. The deadline to register for this event is September 25\, 2018\, as we must provide a list of guests to the Embassy for security reasons several days in advance of the event. There will be no admissions at the door for those who have not registered in advance. \nRegister for this Event click hereThe Embassy of Luxembourg is located at 2200 Massachusetts Avenue\, N.W.\, Washington\, D.C. 20008\, within easy walking distance of the Dupont Circle Red Line Metro station. Street parking in the area is limited\, so planning to arrive by Metro is likely to be easiest. All GWS members and guests are reminded that alcohol consumption can lead to intoxication\, and therefore Society members and their guests are expected to drink in moderation at Society events. Members and guests should use public transportation\, rely on a designated driver\, or mostly taste the wines rather than finish them when such drivers or alternative modes of transportation are not available. The coordinator for this event is GWS Capital Chapter\, President Carl Willner\, who can be reached at 202-674-9044\, or at carl.willner1@verizon.net .

SUMMARY:Abbey Wines Tasting
DESCRIPTION:Dear German Wine Society Members and Guests\,You are in for a very special treat: “Abbey Wines”.This tasting (and seminar) by our own Annette Schiller will show the decisive impact themonasteries and the monks starting in medieval times had on developing viticulturalknowledge in Germany and elsewhere.Annette Schiller is well known to the GWS community through previous wine tastings andher ombiasy wine tours to Bordeaux\, Burgundy and Germany. She has visited almost all ofthe estates she will present on one or more of her tours and has intimate knowledge ofthese producers.Annette will present 12 wines – 8 from Germany\, 2 from France\, 1 from Austria\, 1 fromItaly (Alto Aldige) – that are still produced in monasteries. Some monasteries have beensecularized and taken over by government entities\, some are now in private hands\, othersare still today run by monks or sisters. The highlight will be the Grand Cru Clos de Vougeotfrom the Côte d'Or which retails for about US$ 180. In 1336 the monks of Cîteaux –owners of the vineyard site Clos de Vougeot – were the first to notice that different plotsgave different wines and therefore laid the earliest foundation of the vineyard classificationsystem. The monasteries were always a center of intellectual curiosity and thirst for knowledge. The monasteries had huge holdings on farmland and vineyards – mostly gifts of richaristocrats who at the end of their lives thought to buy a stairway to heaven. The monkshad to work in agriculture to sustain their living. Therefore the monks not only focused onreligious studies but also on studying better methods in farming and viticulture. The monkswere also instrumental in spreading the art of viticulture to other parts of Europe byestablishing daughter monasteries all over Europe. Without their work viticulture would nothave developed the way it did and would not have become a part of fine living as we knowit today throughout the world. The wines:01) 2015 Bermatinger Spätburgunder\, Markgraf von Baden\, Bodensee\, Baden02) 2015 Clos de Vougeot\, Pinot Noir\, Grand Cru\, Burgundy\, France03) NV Crémant\, Brut\, von Hövel\, Mosel04) 2017 Grauburgunder\, Klosterhof Töplitz\, Brandenburg\, Saale-Unstrut05) 2015 Saalhäuser Pinot-Blanc\, Kloster Pforta\, Saale-Unstrut06) 2016 Eisacktaler Sylvaner\, Kloster Neustift\, Alto Aldige\, Italy07) 2016 Grüner Veltliner\, Stift Klosterneuburg\, Wachau\, Austria08) 2016 Riesling\, Abtei Sankt Hildegard\, Rheingau09) 2016 Riesling\, Weingut Liebfrauenstift\, Rheinhessen10) 2016 Steinberger\, Riesling\, Kloster Eberbach\, Rheingau11) 2016 Riesling\, Réserve\, Domaine Weinbach\, Alsace\, France12) 2014 Riesling Goldtröpfchen GG\, Reichsgraf Von Kesselstatt\, MoselDATE: Friday\, April 20th\, Doors open at 7:00 pm; tasting begins at 7:30 pm. SUMMARY:Germany vs. France: Pfalz\, Baden\, Alsace\, Bourgogne
DESCRIPTION:German wine lovers! We are excited to present another tasting in Washington\, DC. This time\, we will be comparing wines from Germany with wines from France. More specifically\, we will compare Germany’s Baden and Pfalz regions with French wines from Burgundy and Alsace. We will begin tasting at 7:00pm\, Friday October 27\, 2017. The tasting will be led by Annette Schiller\, long-time member of the German Wine Society. We will start off with two Crémants from Burgundy and Alsace. Crémants are sparklers made in the Champagne Méthode\, but typically at much lower prices. We will then move on to Burgundy and Baden and focus on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Burgundy\, including Chablis\, is well known for its world class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines. Not so well known\, Germany is the #3 Pinot Noir producer world-wide. Baden alone grows about as much Pinot Noir as the world’s fourth most important Pinot Noir grower\, New Zealand. Such is German enthusiasm for their Spätburgunder\, as Pinot Noir is known there\, that we don’t see huge quantities on export markets. And\, while Spätburgunders from renowned producers are rarely cheap\, Burgundy prices are now almost ludicrously high\, so alternatives to red Burgundy have become increasingly attractive. Moving to the north from Burgundy and to the west from Baden\, Alsace is highly appreciated for its unoaked\, dry and crisp white wines\, such as Pinot Blanc\, Pinot Gris\, Gewürztraminer and Riesling. North of Alsace\, across the border in the Pfalz\, winemakers produce similar wines. Overall\, the whites from Alsace tend to be more full-bodied and higher in alcohol\, while the siblings from the Pfalz tend to be leaner and more elegant. We will compare wines from Alsace and the Pfalz. In total\, we plan to have 12 wines – 3 from each region. The tasting list is being finalized and will be communicated as soon as it is ready. Light refreshments of charcutterie\, cheese and baguette will be served with the wines. Event cost is $33 for members and $40 non-members. All payment must be received by Monday October 23. You can register and pay for this event in one of two ways. Members and guests can still send in a check to the German Wine Society. But you can alternatively register for events on our website by clicking the button below and make payment by Paypal. You will need to set up a GWS account on our website to register\, if you have not already done so for past events\, and also have a Paypal account ready to use for payment. All GWS members and guests are reminded that alcohol consumption can lead to intoxication. Members and guests should use public transportation\, rely on a designated driver\, or taste the wines rather than finish them. The event coordinators are Annette and Christian Schiller. Please send any questions to them at cschiller-schiller-wine.com or aschiller@ombiasypr.com or to German Wine Society Capital Chapter Secretary\, Joe Aguiar\, josephlaguiar@gmail.com The address for our tasting is The Colonnade\, 2801 New Mexico Av\, NW\, at the intersection with 42nd St\, Tunlaw Rd and Fulton St in Glover Park. The closest bus stop is the D2 (from Dupont Circle) at Edmunds and 41st Sts. The N2 and N6 buses stop at New Mexico and Cathedral Aves. The 30 – 37 buses on Wisconsin Ave are a ten-minute walk away at the Garfield St stop. There is valet parking; a $2 gratuity is suggested. All Society members and guests are reminded that alcohol consumption can lead to intoxication\, and therefore Society members and their guests are expected to drink in moderation at Society events. It is advisable to provide designated drivers or other modes of transit where available\, or mostly to taste rather than consume alcohol where such drivers or alternative means of transportation are not available. \n\nRegister for this Event

SUMMARY:GWS 40th announcement
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE JOIN US AS THE GERMAN WINE SOCIETY CELEBRATES OUR 40TH ANNIVERSARY IN WASHINGTON\, D.C. ON JUNE 9-10\, 2017! Can you believe it’s been 40 years already? In 1977\, the German Wine Society began when 83 graduates of the German Wine Academy were inducted in a ceremony at the German Embassy in Washington\, D.C. Ever since then\, we have been carrying out our missions of improving knowledge of German wines and enjoying them with those of similar interests. Much has changed in the world of German wines over the past 40 years. Germany reunified\, and two eastern regions were added to the eleven wine-growing regions in western Germany. Production of red wines has expanded from only a tenth to a full third of all German wines. There are many more good dry white wines to enjoy along with the traditional sweet\, high-prädikat ones. And Germany now has two wine classification systems\, the newer terroir-based VDP one being used alongside the familiar one in the German Wine Law\, with its prädikat levels. But through all these changes\, the members of the German Wine Society have continued to enjoy Germany’s wonderful wines. Now it is time to bring our chapters together again\, for the first time since our 30th Anniversary celebration in 2007. Our 40th Anniversary events will take place over two days\, June 9 and 10\, at three locations in Washington\, D.C. Many of you responded to our “save the date” version of this notice earlier in May\, from our Washington\, D.C.\, Philadelphia\, and San Francisco chapters and even Canada. Below are all the details you will need about the wines\, food\, registration\, payment and getting to the events. We are not booking a block of hotel rooms for the anniversary\, so that you are free to choose where you would like to stay if coming from out of town (or even locally\, if you prefer to stay near to the events and avoid driving afterward). We suggest\, if you need a hotel\, that you select one convenient to our events in the Dupont Circle\, Embassy Row or downtown Washington\, D.C. area. These websites may be useful in finding a hotel: https://washington.org/find-dc-listings/all-places-to-stay https://www.expedia.com/Washington-Hotels.d178318.Travel-Guide-Hotels Registration for all events must be received by Sunday\, June 4\, 2017. You can register and pay for events in either of two ways. First\, you can register on our Washington\, D.C. chapter website\,\, www.germanwinesocietydc.org\, and make payment by Paypal. You will need to create a GWS account for the website if you do not already have one as a member of our chapter\, and you will also need to have a Paypal account. Registration and payment will need to be entered separately for each of the two paid events on June 10\, if you plan to come to both\, although you can complete the payment on Paypal as a single transaction. For couples or others being paid for together\, there is a place on our online registration form to provide the names of additional guests. You will also need to register for the June 9 members-only event even though no payment is required\, as we will need a complete list of attendees in advance for Embassy security. Second\, if you prefer to register by mail and pay by check for the events\, please clip off the registration form attached to this notice\, indicate which events you plan to attend and the names of all who will be attending\, and mail a check made out to the German Wine Society in the proper amount for all events along with the form to: Joseph Aguiar Secretary\, GWS Capital Chapter 2501 Calvert Street N.W.\, Apt. 501 Washington\, D.C. 20008 Whether you are registering by mail or online\, please be sure to provide the names of all persons for whom you are registering\, and pay the appropriate price depending on whether each person is a member of one of the active chapters in the U.S. (with annual dues paid)\, or a non-member (including Canadian GWS). Also\, please only register for the free Embassy event if you are a member of one of the U.S. GWS chapters\, or a Canadian GWS member. There is still time to become a member – just contact the Secretary or other officers of the local chapter most convenient for you. Here’s what we have planned for our Anniversary: June 9\, 7 pm: Reception at the German Embassy\, Karl Schurz Hall 4645 Reservoir Road\, NW\, Washington\, DC 20007. You can celebrate the 40th Anniversary of our society where it began! As we have done for other anniversary events and national conventions\, we will offer a tour of the wine regions of Germany\, with a representative wine from all 13 regions (even the ones that don’t normally export here) along with a selection of catered hors d’oeuvres and other food. For this anniversary\, the Embassy reception will be FREE for members\, and limited to members of U.S. GWS chapters (Washington\, D.C\, Philadelphia\, San Francisco)\, and Canadian GWS members. For security purposes\, the Embassy requires a list of all attendees in advance; no walk-ins are allowed. Those attending this event should enter the Embassy grounds through the main gate on Reservoir Road\, and proceed across the courtyard to the main Embassy building pictured above. Please remember to bring a valid picture ID. There is no parking available on Embassy grounds\, but it should not be difficult at this time of day to find parking on the street nearby if you are driving. Wines at the Embassy Reception: nv Dr. Loosen Sparkling Riesling “Dr. L”\, Mosel (welcoming wine) 2012 Künstler Hochheimer Kirchenstück Riesling Kabinett Trocken\, Rheingau 2015 Ratzenberger-Bacharacher Riesling Kabinett Feinherb\, Mittelrhein 2015 J.u.H.A. It was famously said of the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the 19th century that “if it did not exist\, we would have to invent it.” This vast empire\, the second largest in Europe after Russia before World War I\, abruptly vanished at the end of 1918. One hundred years ago\, Austria-Hungary was in the last full year of its existence\, after centuries of rule by the Habsburg dynasty. The old Emperor\, Franz Josef\, had passed on in 1916 after seven decades on the throne\, and the last Emperor\, Karl\, reigned in Vienna along with his Empress Zita. Germany and Austria-Hungary were natural\, if sometimes uneasy\, allies during World War I. More German speakers could be found in Austria-Hungary than in any nation apart from Germany itself\, and the two nations shared ties not only of language but of history\, music\, art\, cuisine and wines. 2017 is indeed a suitable year to recall this lost world through enjoying the wines from the many lands once ruled by the Habsburgs. Austria and Hungary had a contentious history after the Hungarians settled the Middle Danube Basin in 896 A.D. The Austrian Habsburgs inherited the Hungarian throne in 1526\, when the childless Hungarian king was killed in battle with the Ottoman Turks. Since then\, periodically\, anti-Austrian revolutions broke out in Hungary\, the latest in 1848. But 150 years ago\, the Compromise of 1867 opened a half century period of peace and prosperity which ended with the dismemberment of the Empire when it lost the First World War. During these decades the Empire was a crazy quilt of three kingdoms (Austria\, Hungary and Bohemia) and numerous duchies and provinces\, sprawling over much of Central Europe and into the Balkans. It formerly encompassed all of what is now Austria\, Hungary\, the Czech Republic\, Slovakia\, Slovenia\, Croatia and Bosnia\, as well as lands now included in Romania (Transylvania and the Banat)\, Serbia (Voivodina)\, Italy (Alto Adige/South Tyrol)\, Poland (Galicia) and the Ukraine (Ruthenia). The diversity of terrains and cultures (there were 13 major ethnic groups\, as well as smaller ones) resulted in a correspondingly wide assortment of wines\, though many of them were made from grapes also familiar to German vintners. We will be exploring both those familiar wines and the more exotic indigenous wines (some with tongue-twisting names)\, arranged in flights for comparison. The tasting will be held at Old Europe Restaurant\, whose address is: 2434 Wisconsin Ave. NW Washington\, DC 20007 Parking is available on the side street behind the restaurant A buffet dinner of Austro-Hungarian specialties will be provided\, as follows: Appetizer Old Europe’s bread basket with butter duo and “Schmalz” cold cut platter with deviled eggs and mixed pickles assorted cheese platters with house made Liptauer cheese spread Main Course “Rindsgulasch” – beef goulash breaded pork Schnitzel served with mushroom cream sauce on the side chicken paprikash Old Europe’s most loved sausages served with potato salad\, Spätzle\, cucumber salad\, sauerkraut\, red cabbage Dessert Sacher torte Apple strudel „Palatschinken” with lingonberry jam and apple sauce „Kaiserschmarren” with raisins Here is the full wine list: Austria 2014 Birgit Eichinger Gaisberg Reserve Erste\, Kamptal 2014 Markowitsch Rubin Carnuntum Zweigelt\,Burgenland 2012 Rosenhof Welschriesling TBA\,Burgenland Bosnia 2015 Brkic Citlucka Zilavka\, Hercegovina Croatia 2015 Toreta Posip Premium\, Dalmatia Czech Republic 2014 Vino Z Czech Rivaner\,Moravia Hungary 2015 Disznoko Furmint\, Tokaj Region 2012 Wetzer Kekfrankos\, Sopron Region 2009 Royal Tokaji 5 Puttonyos Aszu\, Tokaj Region Italy 2015 Nals Margreid Gewuerztraminer\, Alto Adige 2013 Castell Sallegg Lagrein\, Alto Adige Romania 2015 Recas La Putere Feteasca Neagra\, Banat Serbia 2014 Agrina Portuguiser\, Fruska Gora Slovakia 2015 Egon Mueller Chateau Bela Riesling\, Sturovo Region Slovenia 2013 Ferdinand Epoca Rebula\, Brda District Event cost is $66 for members and $74 for non-members. Event organizer: Kevin Ross\, 570-561-6540\, keviross@gmail.com\n\n\nRegister for this Event Candidate Statements 2017 Candidate Statement of Carl Willner (for Chapter President) Carl has been a member of the German Wine Society for over 20 years and a member of the board for five years\, having previously served as a director and as Chapter Vice President before being elected Chapter President in the spring of 2015. During the past six years\, he has been responsible for planning numerous GWS events: the tastings at the Embassy of Luxembourg in March 2011\, October 2013\, and April 2016\, the Spargelfest dinners at Café Mozart in May 2013\, 2014\, and 2016\, and at the German Embassy in May 2015\, the Mosel/Moselle themed Oktoberfest in October 2014\, the Oktober Weinfest tours of German wine regions at the German Embassy in September 2015 and 2016\, and the Richard Böcking winemaker event in November 2015. He has also helped conduct several other events including membership meetings and two Oktoberfests\, and was in charge of updating our by-laws in 2013. German wines have long been a part of Carl’s life – his grandparents from Bavaria ran a German restaurant in upstate New York – so the German Wine Society naturally became a part of his life in Washington. During his two years as President\, Carl has overseen our return to the German Embassy for events\, the development of our new website and introduction of the ability to register for events electronically using Paypal\, and outreach to new members\, which has led to our chapter membership more than doubling\, the first major increases in recent years. He looks forward to continuing to lead our chapter into the future\, with the goal of several interesting and educational events each year\, maintaining good relationships with the German and other embassies\, and a continued wine cellar on a modest scale with a more focused acquisition strategy including high-quality wines. During the coming year\, Carl would like to lead our chapter in hosting the 40th Anniversary celebration of the German Wine Society\, the first national GWS event in a decade. He will also work to ensure that the German Wine Society remains accountable and responsive to the interests of its members. Candidate Statement of Christian Schiller (for Vice president) A member of the German Wine Society since he came to the USA in 1983 and a member of the Board since 2010. He has a broad background in international finance and economics. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Mainz\, Germany. Before his retirement in 2010\, he worked for almost 30 years at the International Monetary Fund. With his retirement\, he started to write about wine and was accepted by the International Federation of Wine and Spirits Journalists and Writers. His main outlet for his writing is his daily wine blog “schiller-wine\,” but he has also published in “Falstaff\,” “Weinfeder” and other journals. Many of his publications are on German wine. He has organized many interesting wine events and plans to continue to do so. Candidate Statement of Joseph Aguiar: (for Secretary) I became a member of the German Wine Society in September 2015 and joined the board in February 2016. In my first year\, I planned the “Rieslings of the World” tasting in June\, co-organized the November 2016 Riesling tasting with Weygandt Wines\, and selected the wine list for the 2016 Holiday Party. I believe that German wine is not just of exceptionally high quality: it has a global footprint and inspires wine makers from Keuka\, NY to Eden Valley\, Australia to strive to bring the great German varietals to their own homes. German wine for me is the perfect blend of serious quality\, great value\, terroir\, and fascinating story-telling. I completed the Wine and Spirits Education Trust (WSET) Level III examination in April 2016 and am currently preparing for the Court of Master Sommeliers’ Certified Sommelier exam. When I began to study wine intensely\, the Mosel River Valley was and continues to be one of the world’s most fascinating wine regions for me. The steep slopes\, dark soils\, and moderating effects of the river combine to make it a viticulture marvel. Riesling achieves greatness there\, and\, as a native New Yorker\, I have come to appreciate the Finger Lakes’ Rieslings as a tip of the hat to the grape’s ancestral home in Germany. Please consider me for election to the position of Secretary\, GWS – Capital Chapter. Candidate Statement of Mike Fritze: (for Board Member) Mike Fritze developed his interest in German wines growing up in a German-American family in N.J. He developed a passion for wine during his work-related travels through the U.S. and Europe where he took the time to visit local vineyards and wineries. Mike recently completed his second year of a 3-year AWS wine judge certification class. He is also an avid home winemaker focusing mainly on VA fruit which can be locally sourced. He has been a member of the German Wine society for nearly 10 years recently taking on a Board level position as Secretary where he is responsible for tracking membership records\, event signups\, and overall event planning with the rest of the board. He will be stepping down from his secretary role to focus on starting his new vineyard in Waterford\, VA. Over the years he has led a number of tastings at GWS including popular German red wine focused events. He is excited to be part of the Board and have an impact on future directions of the GWS. Candidate Statement of David Roehm: (for Treasurer and Cellar Master) I am a long-time member of the German Wine Society. I have been Treasurer for 15 years and am now Cellar Master as well. I love German Wines\, particularly Mosel Rieslings\, and have had the wonderful experience of attending the German Wine Academy. During my tenure as Treasurer\, we have striven to keep adequate funds in the Treasury while maintaining reasonable prices for events. I maintain the Society Wine Cellar in my basement. I have a background in management consulting and finance\, including an MBA and experience as a CFO. Candidate Statement of Kevin Ross (for Board Member) Kevin Ross has been active in the German Wine Society for approximately three years\, during which time he set up the chapter’s current website. Innovations include an ecommerce payment system as well as an events calendar for all past and future events. Kevin greatly enjoys the wines of all the culturally Germanic countries like Alsace\, Alto Adige\, Austria and of course Germany. Candidate Statement of Hanne Caraher (for Board Member) Hanne Caraher served the German Wine Society as secretary for well over 20 years before she resigned two years ago. She would like to continue as a member of the chapter board to help pursue and achieve the society’s goals.Candidate Statement of Alexander Friedman (for Board Member) Alexander Friedman was born in Los Angeles\, was raised in New York City and Minnetonka\, MN\, and is a financial broker by trade. His ancestors were winegrowers in Leimersheim\, Pfalz\, Germany\, only a few miles from the famous Deutsche Weinstrasse. An advocate for German American culture and history\, Al has been active in the German Wine Society since moving to DC in 2015\, and is also a member of the German American Heritage Society of the United States. He runs a 10-person tasting group in DC that meets monthly and is always seeking out wine from new producers or obscure varietals. He currently holds the Wine and Spirits Education Trust (WSET) Level 2 certification and is awaiting the results of the WSET Level 3 examination. His other hobbies include hunting\, classical music\, opera\, and working on the family farm in Mott\, North Dakota.

SUMMARY:Rieslings of Austria\, France\, and Germany
DESCRIPTION:Registration for this event is closed.Calling all Riesling lovers! We are excited to welcome Warren Leonard from Weygandt Wines on Friday November 18th at 7:00pm\, to sample Rieslings from Austria\, Alsace\, and Germany. GWS member Dave Wendler and board member Joe Aguiar\, who have both organized events for us before (Dave often handles New Vintages\, and Joe recently presented World Rieslings)\, are planning this event. We will open the event with a brief educational discussion on the wine labelling and winemaking terminologies used on wine bottles in Austria\, Alsace\, and Germany and then Warren will walk us through each wine. It will be a great opportunity to compare and contrast the nuances and differences between different climates\, terroirs\, and winemaking methods. Warren will walk us through the whole spectrum of Riesling styles…and by the end you will be an expert in deciphering the labels of Europe’s great Rieslings and more importantly\, will be able to see the differences (if you’ve not had the pleasure already!) in style achieved by the Riesling grape. The tasting will be held in at:The Van Ness Room 3001 Veazey Terrace NW Washington\, DC 20008It is very easy to get to there via the red line to Van Ness Metro Station.
