SUMMARY:Riesling vs. Chenin Blanc
DESCRIPTION:Riesling vs. Chenin Blanc: What Are the Differences and Similarities? Please plan to join the German Wine Society on Saturday\, November 9\, 2024 at 7:00 pm for a comparative tasting of German Rieslings and Chenin Blancs from France’s Loire Valley\,  with ten different wines offered to illustrate the similarities and differences of wines using these grapes.  The tasting will be presented by our own Annette Schiller\, who will be bringing some of these wines back from Europe just for us from her most recent tour.  This is our penultimate event of 2024\, before the Holiday Dinner on December 7.  Registrations for this event are due by Tuesday\, November 5\, 2024\, and the price is $45 for GWS members\, $52 for non-members.  Please be aware that\, due to limited supply of the wines\, we have maximum cap of 40 for attendance at this event.  Reserve early to avoid disappointment!   Aficionados of a fresh\, crisp white wine will eventually fall in love with both the Riesling and Chenin Blanc grapes.  Riesling is of course Germany’s most planted and best known grape\, while Chenin Blanc\, though not the leading grape of France\, is one of its white stars.  Chenin Blanc acquired its name from Mont-Chenin in the Touraine district of France in the 15th Century\, but can be traced as far back as Anjou in 845 AD.  There is much to love and little to hate at all about either varietal.  Both varietals can be produced in all sorts of styles: sparkling\, still\, bone dry\, semi-sweet\, fruity sweet\, or lusciously sweet.  In five flights\, one Riesling and one Chenin Blanc each\, we will compare the different styles of the two varietals and will examine the decisive factors: acidity level\, sugar level\, ageability\, versatility\, value\, and terroir expressiveness.   Join us for a fun tasting and find out if you are a Riesling or Chenin Blanc fan or maybe both! The specific wines for our Riesling-Chenin Blanc comparison are still in the process of being selected\, but will be provided to attendees at a later time as soon as they are determined.   A tasty buffet of cheeses\, bread\, crackers\, charcuterie\, grapes and veggies will be provided to accompany the wines. Our tasting will begin at 7 p.m on Saturday\, November 9\, with the doors opening at 6:30 p.m. to admit guests.  The location is the Van Ness Room that we have often used before for membership meetings and other events\, including our New German Wine Law tasting in 2023 and Pinots Tasting earlier this year\, at 3001 Veazey Terrace NW\, Washington\, DC 20008.  Enter through the main lobby of the apartment building on the 5th floor\, and then go down to the 2nd floor by elevator and proceed down the hall to the clubroom.  While there is not off-street parking at this location\, on-street parking is available (bear in mind DC parking restrictions and meters)\, and there is easy access to Metro\, at the Van Ness Red Line station.   You can register and pay for this event in either of two ways.   First\, you can register on our chapter website\, https://germanwinesocietydc.org \, and make payment by PayPal.   You will need to create a GWS account for the website if you do not already have one\, and you will also need to have a PayPal account\, as we cannot accept payment by other forms of credit or online transfer.  If you are coming as a couple or other group\, you can either register and pay for each individual separately\, or do it as part of a single transaction and complete the payment on PayPal together.  If you do a single transaction\, please also email the Secretary of the GWS Capital Chapter at the address below to provide the names of each individual coming\, as the individual names will not all appear on the website form for multiple persons registering together. Second\, if you prefer to register by mail and pay by check for the event\, please clip off the registration form attached to this notice\, indicate the names of all who will be attending\, and mail a check made out to the German Wine Society in the proper amount along with the form to:    Carl Willner   President and Secretary\, GWS Capital Chapter   1014 Reserve Champion Drive   Rockville\, MD 20850 You can also reach the Secretary by e-mail at carl.willner1@verizon.net . Whether you are registering by mail or online\, please be sure to provide the names of all persons for whom you are registering\, and pay the appropriate price depending on whether each person is a GWS member (with annual dues paid)\, or a non-member.   You can also become a member or renew\, if your membership is not current\, together with your registration for this event by including an annual $35 dues payment (for an individual or a couple)\, through PayPal\, or by mail using a check\, in the same manner as registering for the event.   If you have been a member of the GWS Capital Chapter in the past but are not sure of your current membership status\, please email the Secretary at the above e-mail to confirm your status.       We are no longer requiring proof of covid-19 vaccination or masking to attend our in-person events\, but do request that if you are experiencing symptoms of covid-19 or other contagious illness\, or have tested positive for such an illness\, you stay home and recover\, and avoid putting other guests at risk.  Refunds can be provided in these circumstances if you notify us before the day of the event\, to allow us time to find another guest to take your place.  Otherwise\, refunds can only be made if you notify us before the deadline for registration. All GWS members and guests are reminded that alcohol consumption can lead to intoxication.   Members and guests should use public transportation to events\, rely on a designated driver\, or taste the wines rather than finish them. If you have questions about this event\, you may contact the event organizer and presenter\, Annette Schiller\, at aschiller@ombiasypr.com \, or by phone at 703-459-7513.  Annette’s website is www.ombiasypr.com . For questions about registration and membership\, please contact Carl Willner\, Capital Chapter President and Secretary\, at  carl.willner1@verizon.net . SUMMARY:Exploring the Pinot grapes of Germany: Red\, White\, Gray
DESCRIPTION:Please plan to join the German Wine Society on Saturday\, March 23\, 2024 at 7:00 pm for a presentation on the Pinot grapes of Germany\, and tasting of nine wines to illustrate the varieties using these grapes\, by our own Annette Schiller\, who has brought some of these wines back from Germany just for us.  This is our first in-person event of 2024.  Registrations for this event are closed.  The 13 wine-growing regions are spread across Germany like a picture. Only in these different regions can the different grape varieties find what they need: the right soils and sheltered locations facing the sun.   Germany has been known in the U.S. mostly for its delicious Rieslings. Yes\, Riesling is the #1 grape produced in Germany and Germany is also the #1 producer of Riesling world-wide (40% of the global Riesling production is in Germany). However\, because of Germany’s very different wine regions ranging from 48.5° latitude to 51° latitude\, the Pinot grapes also discovered perfect growing conditions and feel very comfortable in Germany. The monks from Burgundy brought Pinot grapes to Germany as early as the 12th century (and this origin is reflected in the “Burgunder” part of each grape’s German name). Today Germany is the #1 producer of Pinot-Blanc (Weissburgunder)\, #2 producer of Pinot-Gris (Grauburgunder)\, and #3 producer of Pinot-Noir (Spätburgunder) world-wide.   We will take you on a discovery tour through 7 different wine regions (including at least one that is normally impossible to find in the U.S.) and taste 3 Pinot Noir\,  3 Pinot Gris\, and 3 Pinot Blanc wines.  The wines we will enjoy are as follows:                    The Spätburgunders          1)    2018 Blauer Spätburgunder\, Weingut Ziereisen\, Baden         2)    2020 Pinot Noir\, Weingut Kloster Eberbach\, Rheingau         3)    2020 Spätburgunder\, Simonroth\, Weingut Schnaitmann\, Württemberg                     The Grauburgunders         4)    2021 Pinot Gris\, Asselheim\, Weingut Gaul\, Rheinhessen         5)    2021 Grauburgunder\, Schweigen\, Weingut Jülg\, Pfalz         6)    2017 Grauburgunder\, Reserve\, Weingut Hunn\, Baden                     The Weissburgunders         7)    2020 Weissburgunder\, Weingut Wittmann\, Rheinhessen         8)    2021 Weissburgunder\, Weingut Dönnhoff\, Nahe                                 9)    2022 Weissburgunder\, Kloster Heilig Kreuz\, 1.Lage Weingut Schloss Proschwitz\,     Sachsen A tasty buffet of cheeses\, bread\, crackers\, charcuterie\, grapes and veggies will be provided to accompany the wines.   Our tasting will begin at 7 p.m on Saturday\, March 23\, with the doors opening at 6:30 p.m. to admit guests.  The location is the Van Ness Room that we have often used before for membership meetings and other events\, including our New German Wine Law tasting in 2023\, at 3001 Veazey Terrace NW\, Washington\, DC 20008. SUMMARY:Germany vs. France: Pfalz\, Baden\, Alsace\, Bourgogne
DESCRIPTION:German wine lovers! We are excited to present another tasting in Washington\, DC. This time\, we will be comparing wines from Germany with wines from France. More specifically\, we will compare Germany’s Baden and Pfalz regions with French wines from Burgundy and Alsace. We will begin tasting at 7:00pm\, Friday October 27\, 2017. The tasting will be led by Annette Schiller\, long-time member of the German Wine Society. We will start off with two Crémants from Burgundy and Alsace. Crémants are sparklers made in the Champagne Méthode\, but typically at much lower prices. We will then move on to Burgundy and Baden and focus on Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Burgundy\, including Chablis\, is well known for its world class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay wines. Not so well known\, Germany is the #3 Pinot Noir producer world-wide. Baden alone grows about as much Pinot Noir as the world’s fourth most important Pinot Noir grower\, New Zealand. Such is German enthusiasm for their Spätburgunder\, as Pinot Noir is known there\, that we don’t see huge quantities on export markets. And\, while Spätburgunders from renowned producers are rarely cheap\, Burgundy prices are now almost ludicrously high\, so alternatives to red Burgundy have become increasingly attractive. Moving to the north from Burgundy and to the west from Baden\, Alsace is highly appreciated for its unoaked\, dry and crisp white wines\, such as Pinot Blanc\, Pinot Gris\, Gewürztraminer and Riesling. North of Alsace\, across the border in the Pfalz\, winemakers produce similar wines. Overall\, the whites from Alsace tend to be more full-bodied and higher in alcohol\, while the siblings from the Pfalz tend to be leaner and more elegant. We will compare wines from Alsace and the Pfalz. In total\, we plan to have 12 wines – 3 from each region. The tasting list is being finalized and will be communicated as soon as it is ready. Light refreshments of charcutterie\, cheese and baguette will be served with the wines. Event cost is $33 for members and $40 non-members. All payment must be received by Monday October 23. You can register and pay for this event in one of two ways. Members and guests can still send in a check to the German Wine Society. But you can alternatively register for events on our website by clicking the button below and make payment by Paypal. You will need to set up a GWS account on our website to register\, if you have not already done so for past events\, and also have a Paypal account ready to use for payment. All GWS members and guests are reminded that alcohol consumption can lead to intoxication. Members and guests should use public transportation\, rely on a designated driver\, or taste the wines rather than finish them. The event coordinators are Annette and Christian Schiller. Please send any questions to them at cschiller-schiller-wine.com or aschiller@ombiasypr.com or to German Wine Society Capital Chapter Secretary\, Joe Aguiar\, josephlaguiar@gmail.com The address for our tasting is The Colonnade\, 2801 New Mexico Av\, NW\, at the intersection with 42nd St\, Tunlaw Rd and Fulton St in Glover Park. The closest bus stop is the D2 (from Dupont Circle) at Edmunds and 41st Sts. The N2 and N6 buses stop at New Mexico and Cathedral Aves. The 30 – 37 buses on Wisconsin Ave are a ten-minute walk away at the Garfield St stop. There is valet parking; a $2 gratuity is suggested. All Society members and guests are reminded that alcohol consumption can lead to intoxication\, and therefore Society members and their guests are expected to drink in moderation at Society events. It is advisable to provide designated drivers or other modes of transit where available\, or mostly to taste rather than consume alcohol where such drivers or alternative means of transportation are not available. \n\nRegister for this Event

SUMMARY:Pinot Noir Tasting: Germany Contra Rest of the World
DESCRIPTION:Registration ClosedDear German Wine Society Members and Friends of German Wine\, Pinot Noir\, like Riesling\, does one thing better than any other grape in the world:  expresses site\, climate and vintage.  In this exciting tasting\, you’ll have the chance to experience some of Pinot Noir’s most distinctive terroirs as you sample 12 delicious\, distinctive\, Pinot Noirs from Germany and around the world.  We’ll take a global tour of Pinot Noir styles – but with a distinctly Germanic flair!  Annette Schiller will pour and present 6 Pinot Noirs from Germany ranging from cool-site “village” level wines through more robust (for Germany\, at least!) Pinots from warmer locations and Grand Cru vineyards.  Next to each German example\, Doug House of Chain Bridge Cellars will present examples of Pinot Noir from typical vineyards located in Burgundy and beyond.  By the end of the tasting\, you’ll have a new-found understanding and appreciation of Pinot character in all its diversity and charm. There is a red wine revolution going on in Germany and the world increasingly takes note of it. 30 years ago\, the share of red wine in total German wine output was not more than 10 percent. This has increased to more than 30 percent. One out of three bottles of German wine is a red wine. In terms of Pinot Noir\, Germany is now the third biggest producer in the world\, after France and the US.  We’ll taste: Germany: 2012 Pinot Noir Tradition Paul Fürst Franken                                                            2011 Pinot Noir S Meyer-Näkel Ahr 2009 Spätburgunder  Ökonomierat Rebholz Pfalz 2011 Sonnenberg Pinot Noir Jülg Pfalz                      2011 Sommerhalde Spätburgunder GG Bernhard Huber Baden 2009 Ihringer Winkelberg Spätburgunder GG Dr. Heger Baden Rest of the World: 2012 Chateaux de Vaux Pinot Noir Les Hautes Bassieres Moselle France 2012 Belle Pente Pinot Noir Willamette Valley Oregon 2012 Domaine Pillot Mercurey Rouge Burgundy 2012 Domaine Jean-Michel Guillon Gevrey Chambertin Cuvee Alexis 2012 Burgundy 2010 Rovero Lajetto Pinot Nero Italy 2013 Pali Bluffs Pinot Noir Russian River  Annette is currently in Germany and France\, conducting her Fall Tours by ombiasy PR and WineTours\, and will purchase some of the wines directly at the winery and hand-carry them back to the US for out tasting.  Doug House owns and runs the popular Chain Bridge Cellars in McLean. He says that he and Chain Bridge Cellars have only limited insight into German wines\, which probably is an understatement\, but I can assure you that they cover the rest of the world extremely well.  Doug visits Burgundy annually and tours Oregon and California Pinot vineyards frequently as well.  Together\, Annette and Doug will give you plenty of information\, provide lots of opportunities for questions\, and guarantee that you’ll taste some very satisfying wines! The price for this very special event will be $35 for members\, and $42 for non-members.   The Board encourages all members and friends of the Society to reserve as early as possible\, as this event is expected to be very popular. We will be limiting attendance to 30 guests.  The event will take place on Sunday\, October 4\, 2015\, from 5 pm to 7 pm at Chain Bridge Cellars in McLean. Address: 1351 Chain Bridge Rd\, McLean\, VA 22101\, United States Phone: +1 703-356-6500 There is plenty of parking.  The event will be in the tasting room of Chain Bridge Cellars\, which is located in the basement. Please note that there are only stairs and no elevator. Event coordinator:  Annette and Christian Schiller aschiller@ombiasyPR.com We now have two options to reserve and pay for attendance at our events!   Members and guests can still send in a check\, as in the past\, to the German Wine Society:Please send your check to:German Wine Society1600 Clarendon Blvd.\, W105Arlington\, VA 22209We request you include the following information: Name(s)\, Total Enclosed\, Email\, & Phone Number. But we are now in the electronic age too\, and you can alternatively register for events on our website and make payment by Paypal.  Please click the below button to register for this event. You will need to set up a GWS account on our website to register\, and also have a Paypal account ready to use for payment. \n\n\n \n Register for this Event
