SUMMARY:GWS Capital Chapter Membership Zoom Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Prosit Neujahr! Online registration for the 2024 Capital Chapter Membership Meeting is now open! Please make reservations by Monday\, February 12\, 2024.  This year’s Membership Meeting will take place on Saturday\, February 17\, 2024\, starting at 4:00 pm EST\, and planned to last until about 6:30 pm.  As with our last Membership Meeting in February 2023\, the Membership Meeting this year will be held online\, using Zoom.  Though the pandemic is officially over\, viruses still abound during this winter\, and meeting virtually also avoids the risk of having to postpone for inclement weather\, while permitting our members in more distant locations to attend conveniently.  You will need to have access to Zoom to participate in the meeting\, either downloaded on your computer or otherwise available through your browser (please note\, however\, that there is an option for members to vote in the election by mail even if you do not have Zoom access).  Everyone who provides notification of their intent to come (by registering on the website\, by mail or by email to the Secretary) will receive a Zoom link from Board member Karen Stokes by email prior to the event\, which can be used to log in at the start time.  The meeting’s start time at 4:00 pm EST allows members to finish in time for dinner\, and also allows members who may be in Europe to participate.    Our agenda will begin with reports from the officers of the Chapter\, including discussion of our finances\, membership\, and cellar status\, followed by the Board election\, and then open discussion of other chapter business and questions\, and plans for the future.  What would you like to have the Society do – what are your expectations? The Board needs to know!  The business portion of the meeting will be followed by the fun part – a multiple-choice quiz on knowledge of German wines with the chance to win several wine prizes from our cellar (to be delivered at the next in-person events the winners attend\, or by arrangement with the Cellarmaster for pickup).  Of course\, as this is an online event\, members will supply their own choice of wines\, cheeses and other foods\, and there will be an opportunity to discuss your wine choices with other participants\, as we did during the last Membership Meeting.  Members in good standing (current on dues) pay nothing for this event (but still need to register via our website or mail\, or by email to the Secretary\, so that we can have an accurate count of who is coming and can send the Zoom link to everyone); non-members (including those who have been registered as members before but are not current on dues) pay $15 each\, through website registration using PayPal or by check.    It is at this annual meeting we elect new officers and directors to the Chapter Board.   Only members in good standing\, with annual dues payments current\, are entitled to vote in the election or to attend this event free of charge; $35 annual dues payments per individual or couple may be made online through the website using PayPal or by check to ensure that you are current\, before the meeting.   A dues payment made prior to the meeting is sufficient to restore membership status and allow you to attend without charge and participate in the election.  Please contact the Secretary if you are not sure whether you are current. Members can vote in person at the meeting\, or by returning their written ballots (found at the end of the candidate statements) by February 12\, 2024. Candidate statements and the ballot form (for those who will not be voting in person at the election but would still like to submit a vote) are attached in a separate document\, in the version of this notice sent by e-mail.  Nominations of other candidates than those listed below and on the attached ballot have to be received by no later than Saturday\, February 3\, 2024\, under our By-Laws\, so as to allow revised ballots for the election to be prepared and distributed.  All of the candidates running have already been serving in their positions\, but we have one open Director position without a candidate.  The Chapter President is also running for Chapter Secretary\, in the absence of a separate candidate to fill the Secretary position; he was elected to serve in both capacities for the past four years.   The candidates running for positions on the Board this election are: Carl Willner – for Chapter President and Secretary (positions listed separately on ballot) Christian Schiller – for Chapter Vice President Ken Belsley – for Chapter Treasurer Jim Palanchar – for Director Karen Stokes – for Director\, also serving as Cellarmaster Klaus Teuter – for Director\, also serving as Webmaster   Our By-Laws do not permit nominations from the floor at the meeting for any position for which a candidate is already running\, but only in advance so that ballots for a disputed election can be prepared\, although floor nominations for uncontested positions are allowed.  For this election\, most Board positions except for one Director slot have one candidate running.  You can give back to the Chapter by seeking to join the Board\, or by volunteering to plan or help with a monthly tasting.  Your active participation in planning and managing events helps the organization grow – and to do so in the direction you choose.  All correspondence in response to this email should be directed to our President and Secretary\, Carl Willner\, by email to carl.willner1@verizon.net or by mail at: Carl Willner 1014 Reserve Champion Drive Rockville\, MD 20850   If you are attending as a non-member and need to pay online\, please be sure to have a PayPal account in advance\, as we cannot accept payments by other forms of credit.  If you decide to register by mail\, please mail your registration (and check\, made out to the German Wine Society\, if registering as a non-member) to the Chapter Secretary\, Carl Willner\, whose address is listed above. All GWS members and guests are reminded that alcohol consumption can lead to intoxication. Therefore Society members and their guests are expected to drink in moderation at Society events. Fortunately\, one of the benefits of holding an online event is that most of you will be safely at home and not driving to the event\, but should you decide to visit a friend in order to participate from there\, please bear in mind the usual cautions about having a designated driver where available\, or mostly tasting rather than consuming alcohol when such drivers are not available.  Drinking in moderation will also help to avoid any mishaps using your computer! \nRegister for this\nEvent

Reservations for this event are due by Monday\, July 3\, 2022\, to give us sufficient time to have enough wine and supplies for all aboard.Parking is readily available in garages along the Georgetown riverfront\, and it is possible to walk from Metro at the Foggy Bottom station as well (if you are a good walker). We will be providing all the wines for this event\, as well as disposable plastic glasses and cutlery\, paper plates and napkins\, and will also bring some deli sandwiches or other snacks. Guests are also encouraged to bring their own favorite cheeses\, breads or other food on board. This will be a relaxing cruise\, with no presentation\, allowing everyone to concentrate on the wines\, good company and atmosphere. There are many outdoor and indoor dining establishments along the Georgetown waterfront for dinner after the cruise\, which we encourage you to try.The Nightingale is a boat we have used for some previous cruises\, and is all on one level\, with tables and chairs\, and a bar area from which we can serve wines. It also has protection against inclement weather\, though we have been fortunate with our past wine cruises and reasonably hope for a sunny afternoon once again. The cruise will take place rain or shine\, unless weather conditions do not allow the cruise to set out safely\, in which case we will reschedule or provide refunds.THE WINES: The wines for our cruise will be a mixture of whites and reds\, mostly German but with some other international wines included as well. There will be a good variety of both dry and sweet wines\, including many Kabinett and Spätlese prädikat wines! Because this is not a formal presentation\, and we will only have one or two bottles on hand of each of the wines listed\, everyone will not get the same wines\, but all on the voyage should have the chance to savor around 10-12 different wines. We look forward to sharing the lovely qualities of these German and international wines with our members and guests again. Here’s the wine list we have planned (wines are single bottles unless two bottles are noted):German Wines (6 of 13 German wine regions represented)Whites2019 A.J. SUMMARY:Oktober Weinfest at the German Ebassy- October 7\, 2022
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE JOIN US FOR AN OKTOBER WEINFEST AT THE GERMAN EMBASSY AS THE GERMAN WINE SOCIETY CELEBRATES OUR 45TH ANNIVERSARY IN WASHINGTON\, D.C. ON OCTOBER 7\, 2022! It’s been a challenging past few years\, but at last the chapters of the German Wine Society are able to gather again to share our love of German wine\, at the German Embassy where it all began 45 years ago.  Please make plans to join us!   In 1977\, the German Wine Society began when 83 graduates of the German Wine Academy were inducted in a ceremony at the German Embassy in Washington\, D.C.   Ever since then\, we have been carrying out our missions of improving knowledge of German wines and enjoying them with those of similar interests. Much has changed in the world of German wines over the past 45 years.    Germany reunified\, and two eastern regions were added to the eleven wine-growing regions in western Germany.   Production of red wines has expanded from only a tenth to a full third of all German wines.   There are many more good dry white wines to enjoy along with the traditional sweet\, high-prädikat ones.   And Germany now has two wine classification systems\, the newer terroir-based one developed by the VDP and embodied in the 2021 wine law being used alongside the familiar one from the 1971 German Wine Law\, with its prädikat levels.   But through all these changes\, the members of the German Wine Society have continued to enjoy Germany’s wonderful wines.    Now it is time to bring our chapters together again\, for the first time since our 40th Anniversary celebration in 2017. Our 45th Anniversary event is an “Oktober Weinfest” in celebration of the fall harvest season and the famed Oktoberfest in Germany.  It will take place on the evening of Friday\, October 7\, 2022\, from 6:30 pm to 9:30 pm at the Embassy House of the German Embassy in Washington\, D.C.\, with admission to the Embassy beginning at 6:00 pm.  For this event\, we welcome GWS members from our Washington\, D.C.\, Philadelphia\, and San Francisco chapters\, and Canadian GWS members as well as non-members are also welcome to register and attend.   Below are all the details you will need about the wines\, food\, registration\, payment and getting to the event.    We are not booking a block of hotel rooms for the 45th anniversary\, so that you are free to choose where you would like to stay if coming from out of town (or even locally\, if you prefer to stay near to the event and avoid a long drive afterward).   We suggest\, if you need a hotel\, that you select one convenient to our event in the Dupont Circle\, Embassy Row or downtown Washington\, D.C. area (hotels are not adjacent to the German Embassy\, which is in a residential area).   These websites may be useful in finding a hotel:    https://washington.org/find-dc-listings/all-places-to-stay https://www.expedia.com/Washington-Hotels.d178318.Travel-Guide-Hotels Registration for this event must be received by Sunday\, October 2\, 2022.    You can register and pay for events in either of two ways.    First\, you can register on our Washington\, D.C. chapter website\, https://germanwinesocietydc.org \, and make payment by PayPal.   You will need to create a GWS account for the website if you do not already have one as a member of our Capital Chapter\, and you will also need to have a PayPal account.  If you are coming as a couple or other group\, you can either register and pay for each individual separately\, or do it as part of a single transaction and complete the payment on PayPal together.  If you do a single transaction\, please also email the Secretary of the GWS Capital Chapter at the address below to provide the names of each individual coming\, as we will need a complete list of all attendee names in advance for Embassy security.   Second\, if you prefer to register by mail and pay by check for the event\, please clip off the registration form attached to this notice\, indicate the names of all who will be attending\, and mail a check made out to the German Wine Society in the proper amount along with the form to:   Carl Willner President and Secretary\, GWS Capital Chapter 1014 Reserve Champion Drive Rockville\, MD 20850 You can also reach the Secretary by e-mail at carl.willner1@verizon.net .      Whether you are registering by mail or online\, please be sure to provide the names of all persons for whom you are registering\, and pay the appropriate price depending on whether each person is a member of one of the active chapters in the U.S. (with annual dues paid)\, or a non-member (including Canadian GWS).   There is still time to become a member – just contact the Secretary or other officers of the local chapter most convenient for you (Capital Chapter for the Washington\, D.C. area\, or the Delaware Valley/Philadelphia or San Francisco chapters).  You can join the GWS Capital Chapter either by using the website and registering to pay annual dues of $35 through PayPal\, or by mail using a check\, in the same manner as registering for the event.   If you have been a member of the GWS Capital Chapter in the past but are not sure of your current membership status\, please email the chapter Secretary at the above e-mail to confirm your status.   Here’s what we have planned for our 45th Anniversary: October 7\, 6:30 pm (entry to Embassy compound passing through security beginning 6 pm):   Reception and wine dinner at the German Embassy House.  Enter at the main Embassy gate on 4645 Reservoir Road\, NW\, Washington\, DC 20007\, and proceed up the stairway alongside the main Embassy building depicted here to the Embassy House on the upper level.   For those who have difficulty ascending the stairs\, escorts from the Embassy staff can bring guests through the Embassy building and up an elevator. You can celebrate the 45th Anniversary of our society where it began!  As we have done for other anniversary events and national conventions\, we will offer a tour of the wine regions of Germany\, with a representative wine from all 13 regions plus a sekt\, for a total of 14 wines from ten different grapes!  This is a tasting opportunity impossible to replicate elsewhere in the United States\, as wines from three of these regions are not normally imported and had to be brought directly from Germany for this event.  We will begin with a sekt reception on the patio (weather permitting) and followed by a multi-course seated dinner inside the Embassy House.  For security purposes\, the Embassy requires a list of all attendees in advance; no walk-ins are allowed.  Please remember to bring a valid picture ID.    There is no parking available on Embassy grounds\, but it should not be difficult at this time of day to find parking on the street nearby if you are driving.   Be alert\, however\, to DC parking restrictions.  The German Embassy is not near a Metro subway stop\, but it is also possible to arrive by Metro bus (D6 to Foxhall Rd.) or by taxi/ride service. The price for this event will be $85 for members\, and $115 for non-members.  Members enjoy the benefit of support of this event from the National GWS organization and your dues payments.   There will be a 60-person limit on attendance at this event\, including Embassy guests\, so reserve soon to avoid disappointment. During the event\, GWS members from all U.S. chapters will vote to elect officers and directors of the national German Wine Society Board.  Any nominations for the national Board from current members in good standing should be submitted to National President Beth Sheligo\, at bsheligo@germanwinesociety.org \, no later than September 20\, 2022 to allow time for ballots to be prepared and circulated before the meeting.  Nominations submitted to the GWS Capital Chapter President and Secretary at carl.willner1@verizon.net will be forwarded to President Sheligo.  Candidates for the Board will be announced before the meeting.  Members can vote on the Board and on by-laws either in person or by providing written proxies to other members attending the meeting (ballots and proxies will be e-mailed separately to members).  Members must be in good standing (current on dues payments) to be eligible to vote in person or by proxy. For the health and safety of all members and guests\, those attending this event are required to show proof of vaccination against covid-19.  This may be done in advance by sending an e-mail to the GWS Capital Chapter Secretary with a legible photo image of a vaccination card\, or by producing a vaccination card at the event either physically or by a legible photo image at the time of signing in at the event at the Embassy House.   The GWS Capital Chapter has consistently followed this policy at our in-person events since resuming those events in the summer of 2021\, and in respect to our German Embassy hosts as well as due to concern for our members and friends\, we are maintaining that policy for this event as well.  Guests who fail to provide proof of vaccination will not be admitted.  Please also have masks available in case they are required when passing through Embassy security\, though masks will not be necessary and would be impractical during the reception and dinner. All GWS members and guests are reminded that alcohol consumption can lead to intoxication.   Members and guests should use public transportation to events\, rely on a designated driver\, or taste the wines rather than finish them. The event coordinator for the 45th Anniversary is Carl Willner\, Capital Chapter President and Secretary.  Please send any questions to Carl at carl.willner1@verizon.net . We look forward to seeing you in October for the GWS 45th Anniversary!    Please check our Capital Chapter website and register soon. Beth C. We will sample a wide variety of wines from our cellar and also have our traditional quiz game and cheeses and bread. There will be a discussion of our finances\, membership and cellar status\, followed by an open discussion of plans for the future. SUMMARY:Embassy of Luxembourg Wine Tasting: Friday\, September 28
DESCRIPTION:We will once again be at the beautiful Embassy of Luxembourg in Washington\, D.C. for our next tasting on Friday\, September 28\, 2018 at 7 pm (with guests admitted for registration starting at 6:30 pm).  The tasting will conclude at 9 pm.  Many of you will remember our very successful events at the Embassy of Luxembourg in 2011\, 2013\, and 2016\, and this provides us with another exciting opportunity to try the varied wines of the “other Mosel\,” the Moselle River in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.   Our host for this evening will be Ambassador Sylvie Lucas\, and in preparing for this event we have worked closely with Consul Stan Myck\, who has aided us in obtaining all these wonderful Luxembourg wines. We will offer a very extensive selection of twenty-two wines from Luxembourg for this event\, including the wines of both of Luxembourg’s largest producers\, the Domaines Vinsmoselle cooperative and Bernard-Massard\, and one wine from the Domaine de l’Etat and one Rosé supplied by the Embassy and not available for public sale\, but served only at diplomatic and other government functions.  Most of the wines from Luxembourg are white\, and tend to be dry\, but we have also been able to include a few red and rosé wines.  During the latter part of the evening\, we will serve several of the sweeter “specialty wines” from Luxembourg\, such as Vin Moelleux (mellow or medium-sweet wine)\, Vendange Tardive (late harvest)\, Vin de Glace (ice wine) and Vin de Paille  (straw wine)\, which are produced in very limited quantities and rarely exported – but you can enjoy them now on the territory of the Grand Duchy through the German Wine Society without having to make a trip to Europe!   Lovers of the high-praedikat wines from the producers of the Mosel in Germany will find these specialty wines a fascinating comparison.  Wines for this event will include: Embassy wines: Welcoming glass: Caves Bernard-Massard\, Cuvée de l’Ecusson\, Brut Crémant Domaine de l’Etat\, Côteaux de Remich\, Grand Premier Cru\, Riesling\, 2014 Schram & Fils\, Côtes de Wellenstein\, Gris de Pinot Gris (rosé)\, 2014 Domaines Vinsmoselle Wines: Cuvée Millésimée\, Brut Crémant\, 2013 “Spirit of Schengen”\, Pinot Noir\, Brut Crémant  Greiveldange Herrenberg\, Grand Premier Cru\, Auxerrois\, 2016 Stadtbredimus Rousenberg\, Grand Premier Cru\, Pinot Blanc\, 2016 Wormeldange Mohrberg\, Grand Premier Cru\, Pinot Gris\, 2016 Wormeldange Weinbour\, Grand Premier Cru\, Riesling\, 2016 Machtum Gollebour\, Grand Premier Cru\, Gewürztraminer\, 2016 Vin Rosé\, Appellation d’Origine Protégée\, Elbling\, 2016 Château Edmond de la Fontaine\, Cuvée Réserve élevée en barrique\, Pinot Noir\, 2014 Vieilles Vignes\, Grand Premier Cru\, Riesling\, 2015 Caves Bernard-Massard Wines: Grand Premier Cru\, Riesling\, 2013 Grand Premier Cru\, Pinot Gris\, 2014 Grand Premier Cru\, Auxerrois\, 2014 Vin de Qualité\, Rivaner\, 2014 Domaines Vinsmoselle “Specialty” Wines: Vin Moelleux\, Grand Premier Cru\, Gewürztraminer\, 2016 Vendange Tardive\, Grand Premier Cru\, Pinot Gris\, 2015 Vin de Paille\, Grand Premier Cru\, Auxerrois\, 2015 Vin de Paille\, Grand Premier Cru\, Gewürztraminer\, 2015 Vin de Glace\, Grand Premier Cru\, Riesling\, 2016 And throughout the evening\, the Embassy will be serving hors d’oeuvres and amuse-bouches\, as well as desserts prepared by the Embassy’s French chef to accompany the wines. The price for this event is $72 for members\, and $80 for non-member guests.  Registration will be limited to 60 guests\, so register early to avoid disappointment.  You can register and pay for this event in either of two ways.   You can register on our website (germanwinesocietydc.org) and make payment by Paypal.   You will need to set up a GWS account if you have not done so already for past events\, and have a Paypal account.   You can also pay by check\, made out to the German Wine Society\, and mailed to the GWS Secretary\, Joseph Aguiar\, at 1130 45th Place SE\, Washington\, DC 20019\, along with the completed form below.   The deadline to register for this event is September 25\, 2018\, as we must provide a list of guests to the Embassy for security reasons several days in advance of the event.   There will be no admissions at the door for those who have not registered in advance. \nRegister for this Event click hereThe Embassy of Luxembourg is located at 2200 Massachusetts Avenue\, N.W.\, Washington\, D.C. 20008\, within easy walking distance of the Dupont Circle Red Line Metro station.  Street parking in the area is limited\, so planning to arrive by Metro is likely to be easiest. All GWS members and guests are reminded that alcohol consumption can lead to intoxication\, and therefore Society members and their guests are expected to drink in moderation at Society events.  Members and guests should use public transportation\, rely on a designated driver\, or mostly taste the wines rather than finish them when such drivers or alternative modes of transportation are not available. The coordinator for this event is GWS Capital Chapter\, President Carl Willner\, who can be reached at 202-674-9044\, or at carl.willner1@verizon.net .

DESCRIPTION:The Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Wine Society are pleased to co-sponsor the traditional annual GWS Spargelfest dinner at the German Embassy House on the evening of Friday\, May 25\, 2018.  “Spargelfest” is a feast of asparagus-themed dishes\, including white asparagus\, paired with wines.   We will begin this memorable evening with a welcoming Sekt paired with hors d’oeuvres\, served outside on the Embassy House terrace if weather permits.   The dinner will be served in the Embassy House itself\, with three plated courses followed by a dessert buffet. The Embassy will begin admitting guests at 6:30 pm through the main Embassy entrance at 4645 Reservoir Road NW\, Washington\, DC\, with dinner beginning at 7:15 pm.   You will need to ascend the stairs from the Embassy courtyard to the House\, or be escorted through the main Embassy building to use the elevator to reach the House\, which is located on the upper side of the Embassy grounds on Foxhall Road.   Only guests with special needs can be admitted through the Embassy House doors on the street side\, 1900 Foxhall Road NW\, and only if they notify GWS in advance so that we can inform Embassy security.   Street parking is available along Reservoir Road within walking distance of the Embassy entrance.   Guests can also arrive by taxi or the nearest bus lines (D6). Dishes for this dinner will be prepared by the Embassy’s talented Chef Daniel Labonne\, who was also responsible for food served at our 40th Anniversary reception at the Embassy in June 2017\, and our Oktober Weinfest at the Embassy House in September 2017. The Embassy House doors will open at 6:30 pm for registration of guests\, and to allow you to enjoy some welcoming sekt and hors d’oeuvres before the main tasting begins.  The theme of our Oktober Weinfest this year is a tour of three major German wine regions lying west of the Rhine\, the Mosel\, Rheinhessen and Pfalz\, and we will have fifteen wines\, including primarily Rieslings\, but also two Gewürztraminers and a Dornfelder.  There will be four wines from each region in the main part of the tasting\, including 2 trocken\, 2 QW\, 4 Kabinett\, and 4 Spätlese wines\, followed by a Riesling Auslese and a Riesling Beerenauslese wine with dessert.   Wines will be poured for you by our own experienced members\, who have been to a number of these regions.  This tasting provides the opportunity for us to explore the diversity of wines and producers in these three regions at once\, including several older vintages not readily available on the market.  Together with these wines\, we will have an ample buffet of delicious foods\, many in German style\, prepared by the Embassy’s outstanding new chef Daniel Labonne and his staff.  Those of you who attended the 40th Anniversary reception at the Embassy in June have already experienced Chef Labonne’s culinary skills and we now have the chance to savor his dishes again!   The price for this very special event will be $83 for members\, and $90 for non-members – lower than last year’s Weinfest!   The Board encourages all members and friends of the Society to reserve as early as possible\, as this event is expected to be very popular.   We will be limiting attendance to 50 guests\, to ensure that everyone can best enjoy the event.   Reservations must be received by Monday\, September 25\, 2015\, for Embassy security – no late reservations or signups at the event can be accepted.  Weather permitting\, the Embassy House terrace will be open for you to relax with your welcoming sekt and savor the wines.   We anticipate Embassy personnel to be present for our event as well. And\, now that the fun is out of the way\, just a reminder that most of you have received notices about renewing your annual membership dues to the GWS for the year July 1\, 2017 to June 30\, 2018 (except for those who have recently joined this year).  Dues ($35 a year for either a single or a couple membership) can be paid by check to the German Wine Society\, and addressed to Joseph Aguair\, Secretary\, German Wine Society\, 2501 Calvert Street N.W.\, Apartment 501\, Washington\, DC 20008.  Alternatively\, dues can now also be paid online through our website using Paypal\, in the same manner as when registering for an event.  For those of you who have already taken care of this\, a hearty thank you!  For those of you who haven’t\, a hearty thank you awaits.  A membership payment at the same time as your reservation will qualify you for the member price for this event\, if you’re not already a paid-up member (and if there are two of you coming as a couple\, that will save you nearly half the cost of annual membership on this one event!). \n\nRegister for this Event

SUMMARY:GWS 40th announcement
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE JOIN US AS THE GERMAN WINE SOCIETY CELEBRATES OUR 40TH ANNIVERSARY IN WASHINGTON\, D.C. ON JUNE 9-10\, 2017! Can you believe it’s been 40 years already?    In 1977\, the German Wine Society began when 83 graduates of the German Wine Academy were inducted in a ceremony at the German Embassy in Washington\, D.C.   Ever since then\, we have been carrying out our missions of improving knowledge of German wines and enjoying them with those of similar interests. Much has changed in the world of German wines over the past 40 years.    Germany reunified\, and two eastern regions were added to the eleven wine-growing regions in western Germany.   Production of red wines has expanded from only a tenth to a full third of all German wines.   There are many more good dry white wines to enjoy along with the traditional sweet\, high-prädikat ones.   And Germany now has two wine classification systems\, the newer terroir-based VDP one being used alongside the familiar one in the German Wine Law\, with its prädikat levels.   But through all these changes\, the members of the German Wine Society have continued to enjoy Germany’s wonderful wines.    Now it is time to bring our chapters together again\, for the first time since our 30th Anniversary celebration in 2007. Our 40th Anniversary events will take place over two days\, June 9 and 10\, at three locations in Washington\, D.C.    Many of you responded to our “save the date” version of this notice earlier in May\, from our Washington\, D.C.\, Philadelphia\, and San Francisco chapters and even Canada.   Below are all the details you will need about the wines\, food\, registration\, payment and getting to the events.    We are not booking a block of hotel rooms for the anniversary\, so that you are free to choose where you would like to stay if coming from out of town (or even locally\, if you prefer to stay near to the events and avoid driving afterward).   We suggest\, if you need a hotel\, that you select one convenient to our events in the Dupont Circle\, Embassy Row or downtown Washington\, D.C. area.   These websites may be useful in finding a hotel:    https://washington.org/find-dc-listings/all-places-to-stay https://www.expedia.com/Washington-Hotels.d178318.Travel-Guide-Hotels Registration for all events must be received by Sunday\, June 4\, 2017.    You can register and pay for events in either of two ways.    First\, you can register on our Washington\, D.C. chapter website\,\, www.germanwinesocietydc.org\,  and make payment by Paypal.   You will need to create a GWS account for the website if you do not already have one as a member of our chapter\, and you will also need to have a Paypal account.  Registration and payment will need to be entered separately for each of the two paid events on June 10\, if you plan to come to both\, although you can complete the payment on Paypal as a single transaction.   For couples or others being paid for together\, there is a place on our online registration form to provide the names of additional guests.  You will also need to register for the June 9 members-only event even though no payment is required\, as we will need a complete list of attendees in advance for Embassy security.    Second\, if you prefer to register by mail and pay by check for the events\, please clip off the registration form attached to this notice\, indicate which events you plan to attend and the names of all who will be attending\, and mail a check made out to the German Wine Society in the proper amount for all events along with the form to:   Joseph Aguiar Secretary\, GWS Capital Chapter 2501 Calvert Street N.W.\, Apt. 501 Washington\, D.C. 20008     Whether you are registering by mail or online\, please be sure to provide the names of all persons for whom you are registering\, and pay the appropriate price depending on whether each person is a member of one of the active chapters in the U.S. (with annual dues paid)\, or a non-member (including Canadian GWS).   Also\, please only register for the free Embassy event if you are a member of one of the U.S. GWS chapters\, or a Canadian GWS member.  There is still time to become a member – just contact the Secretary or other officers of the local chapter most convenient for you.     Here’s what we have planned for our Anniversary: June 9\, 7 pm:   Reception at the German Embassy\, Karl Schurz Hall                     4645 Reservoir Road\, NW\, Washington\, DC 20007.     You can celebrate the 40th Anniversary of our society where it began!  As we have done for other anniversary events and national conventions\, we will offer a tour of the wine regions of Germany\, with a representative wine from all 13 regions (even the ones that don’t normally export here) along with a selection of catered hors d’oeuvres and other food.   For this anniversary\, the Embassy reception will be FREE for members\, and limited to members of U.S. GWS chapters (Washington\, D.C\, Philadelphia\, San Francisco)\, and Canadian GWS members.  For security purposes\, the Embassy requires a list of all attendees in advance; no walk-ins are allowed.  Those attending this event should enter the Embassy grounds through the main gate on Reservoir Road\, and proceed across the courtyard to the main Embassy building pictured above.   Please remember to bring a valid picture ID.    There is no parking available on Embassy grounds\, but it should not be difficult at this time of day to find parking on the street nearby if you are driving.    Wines at the Embassy Reception: nv Dr. Loosen Sparkling Riesling “Dr. L”\, Mosel (welcoming wine) 2012 Künstler Hochheimer Kirchenstück Riesling Kabinett Trocken\, Rheingau 2015 Ratzenberger-Bacharacher Riesling Kabinett Feinherb\, Mittelrhein 2015 J.u.H.A. DESCRIPTION:Registration for this event is closed.\n\nTHE GERMAN WINE SOCIETY RETURNS TO THE EMBASSY OF LUXEMBOURG!\n\nDear German Wine Society Members and Friends of German Wine\,\n\nWe will once again be at the beautiful Embassy of Luxembourg in Washington\, D.C. for our next tasting on Friday\, April 8\, 2016 at 7 pm.  Many of you will remember our very successful events at the Embassy of Luxembourg in 2011 and 2013\, and this provides us with another exciting opportunity to try the varied wines of the “other Mosel\,” the Moselle River in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.   Our host for this evening\, as at our 2013 event\, will be Ambassador Jean-Louis Wolzfeld\, who is nearing the end of his tour of duty in the United States this summer\, so this event also provides us with the opportunity to thank him a final time for his gracious hospitality to our Society.\n\nWines for this event will include:\n\nBernard Massard Cuvee de l’Ecusson Brut Blanc\nBernard Massard Cuvee de l’Ecusson Brut Rose\n2013 Bernard Massard Grand Premier Cru Riesling\n2012 Bernard Massard Vin de Qualite Rivaner\n2014 Bernard Massard Grand Premier Cru Auxerrois\n2014 Bernard Massard Grand Premier Cru Pinot Gris\n2014 Clos des Rochers Grand Premier Cru Pinot Blanc\n\nIn addition\, the Embassy is likely to\, as at our last event\, supply some wines from its own cellar for the event\, produced from the State Domain — ones that are not available for public sale but used only for events hosted by theLuxembourg government and its embassies.   And throughout the evening\, the Embassy will be serving light refreshments to accompany the wines.\n\nAnd as a final treat\, we will have some older vintages and Luxembourg specialty wines\, such as Vendange Tardive (late harvest)\, Vin de glace (ice wine)\, and Vin Moelleux (mellow or medium-sweet wine)\, as at our 2013 event.  Luxembourg’s specialty wines are produced in very small quantities and these wines are not normally available for sale in the United States\, but you can enjoy them now on the territory of the Grand Duchy through the German Wine Society without having to make a trip to Luxembourg!   Though guests will not be able to sample all of these wines in light of the limited quantities remaining from our cellar\, you should be able to try two or three of them.   These wines will include:\n\n\n2008 Bernard Massard Clos des Rochers Grand Premier Cru Pinot Gris\n2009 Bernard Massard Clos des Rochers Grand Premier Cru Auxerrois\n2011 Schram & Fils Bech-Kleinmacher Naumberg Riesling Vin Moelleux\n2010 Guy Krier-Welbes Ellange-Gare Auxerrois Vendange Tardive\n2009 Guy Krier-Welbes Ellange-Gare Pinot Gris Vendange Tardive\n2007 Caves St. Remy Remich Grand Premier Cru Riesling Vendange Tardive\n2007 Caves St. Remy Remich Grand Premier Cru Riesling Vin de Glace\n\nThe price for this event is a very reasonable $45 for members\, and $52 for non-member guests.  You can register and pay for this event via Paypal by heading to our Register page on the top menu.   You will need to set up a GWS account if you have not done so already for past events\, and have a Paypal account.  The deadline to register for this event is March 31\, 2016\, as we must provide a list of guests to the Embassy for security reasons a week in advance of the event. Registration will also close if the event reaches 60 attendees as this is the capacity for the embassy. If you are interested please register as soon as possible.\n\nThe Embassy of Luxembourg is located at 2200 Massachusetts Avenue\, N.W.\, Washington\, D.C.\, within easy walking distance of the Dupont Circle Red Line Metro station.  Street parking in the area is limited\, so planning to arrive by Metro is likely to be easiest.\n\nAll GWS members and guests are reminded that alcohol consumption can lead to intoxication\, and therefore Society members and their guests are expected to drink in moderation at Society events.  Members and guests should use public transportation\, rely on a designated driver\, or mostly taste the wines rather than finish them when such drivers or alternative modes of transportation are not available.\n\nThe coordinator for this event is GWS Capital Chapter President Carl Willner.\n\n

SUMMARY:Tasting with Weingut Richard Bocking
DESCRIPTION:The German Wine Society would like to invite you to a very special evening with Denman Zirkle and his daughter Sigrid Zirkle Carroll\, owners of Weingut Richard Böcking in the Mosel Valley\, Germany. The tasting will take place on Friday\, November 20\, 2015\, at 7:30 p.m. The price for the tasting is $35 for members and $42 for guests.   The deadline to register is Monday\, November 16. We do not often have the chance to welcome a Mosel producer in person at our tastings\, and to have one with such strong connections to the United States as well as Germany is unprecedented.  Weingut Richard Böcking is a Mosel estate with a long history\, established in 1623.  The Böcking family was once one of the wealthiest in the Mosel\, and even Goethe visited the family villa in 1792 and praised the Mosel wines.  The Böcking estate acquired precious vineyards such as the Ungsberg and Schlossberg after Napoleon ended the feudal system in the region\, with the family seat of Traben-Trarbach becoming a wine trade center of world renown. Though the family fortunes declined in the 20th century and the estate was virtually unknown a few years ago\, it is now being revived by the Böcking family.   The estate has 15 acres under cultivation\, with 95% Riesling plantings\, and four of its five vineyards are classified as Grand Cru\, including the Ungsberg\, Schlossberg and Burgberg\, all represented at this tasting. Interestingly\, two of the three protagonists in the revival process – Denman Zirkle and Sigrid Carroll – are based in Virginia.  Denman Zirkle\, Managing Partner of the estate\, is an American\, who married into the Richard Böcking family while he was on an external assignment for IBM in Frankfurt.   Sigrid Carroll\, Director of North American Marketing for the winery\, is a direct Böcking descendant through her mother\, who was a granddaughter of Kurt Böcking.  She was educated in the United States but has frequently traveled to Germany and worked summers in the family vineyards in Traben-Trarbach while in her teens.  You will hear more about this exciting undertaking during the tasting. Denman Zirkle and Sigrid Carroll will pour a selection of the Weingut Richard Böcking wines\, which are all available in the US (some in Washington\, D.C. and Virginia\, while others are available in Montana and the New York/New Jersey area). 2014 RichHeart Riesling 2014 RichHeart Pinot Blanc (Weissburgunder) 2013 Devon Riesling 2014 Devon Riesling 2012 “M” Trarbacher Burgberg Kabinett Riesling 2013 “M” Trarbacher Burgberg Spätlese  Riesling 2012 Trarbacher Ungsberg Alte Reben Riesling 2012 Trarbacher Burgberg Alte Reben Riesling 2014 Trarbacher Ungsberg Alte Reben  Riesling 2014 Trarbacher Schlossberg Alte Reben  Riesling Most of the Weingut Richard Böcking wines are in the dry to off-dry (feinherb) range\, with the exception of the “M” wines.  We will have a variety of light food (cheeses\, crackers\, pretzel sandwiches from Heidelberg Bakery) to accompany the tasting. The tasting will be held at the Harbour Square Club Room. The address for our tasting is 500 N St SW\, Washington\, DC. 20024. It is very easy to get to and park there. Marilyn Scarbrough has thoughtfully reserved a few spaces in her complex’s visitors parking\, but we cannot guarantee that these will be available. Metro is very accessible\, the Green Line\, Waterfront. All Society members and guests are reminded that alcohol consumption can lead to intoxication\, and therefore Society members and their guests are expected to drink in moderation at Society events.  It is advisable to provide designated drivers or other modes of transit where available\, or mostly to taste rather than consume alcohol when such drivers or alternative means of transportation are not available.   Event coordinators:  Carl Willner and Christian Schiller.   We can be reached with any questions through the GWS Capital Chapter website\, germanwinesocietydc.org . We now have two options to reserve and pay for attendance at our events!   Members and guests can still send in a check\, as in the past\, to the German Wine Society.   But we are now in the electronic age too\, and you can alternatively register for events on our website and make payment by Paypal.  You will need to set up a GWS account on our website to register\, and also have a Paypal account ready to use for payment. If you prefer to pay via check please make it payable to: German Wine Society Please send your check to: German Wine Society c/o Michael Fritze 1602 Greenbriar Court Reston\, VA  20190 \n\n\n \n Register for this Event
