On Saturday evening, June 23, 2018, the San Francisco Chapter of the German Wine Society will have a Special Guided Tasting of German wines from two of the well regarded producers of German wine – Weingut Vols in the Mosel/Saar and Weingut Hexamer in the Nahe. The wines served will range from dry to sweet, and we will have representatives from both wineries leading the guided tasting – Helmut Plunien, owner and winemaker at Vols, and Roland Bambach, National Sales Manager for Hexamer. Helmut Plunien founded a tiny estate in Wiltingen, and, in 2009, purchased superb holdings in the Ayler Kupp vineyard and holdings in the partly abandoned but still fascinating Schonfels vineyard. Hexamer holds 18.5 hectares of vineyards with 7.5 of those hectares in the Meddersheimer Rheingrafenberg vineyard, a steep south-east facing slope of red sandstone with deposits of quartzite, which is known for producing especially small berries.
