Event Review: 2015 German Vintage Tasting with Phil Bernstein

The annual “New German Vintage” tasting of the German Wine Society (Washington DC Chapter) around February/March/April, led by Phil Bernstein, is always a highlight for the German wine aficionados in the Washington DC area. This year again, we had a full house, with 67 people having signed up. Below is a small excerpt of the event:
We keep it light and have lots of great back and forth banter. The wines are the stars of the show, and if you’re not too familiar with German wine, this will be a great learning opportunity. If you haven’t already heard, 2015 is a fantastic vintage for the great Rieslings of Germany-you do not want to miss this!

Event Review: Salon Tasting at Schiller’s Home: Sparkling Wines of the World

The German Wine Society (Washington DC Chapter) organized a Sparkling Wines of the World tasting on March 25th, 2017 that was graciously hosted at the home of Christian and Annette Schiller. GWS Secretary Joseph Aguiar was the event coordinator and along with Annette Schiller led the evening tasting. Below is a small excerpt of the event:

Sekt is made in all German wine regions, both in the méthode traditionnelle and charmat method. There are three groups of Sekt makers: (i) large and (ii) smaller Sekt houses, who only make Sekt and (iii) winemakers, who make predominantly wine, but complement their wine selection by a few Sekts. The Sekts produced by large Sekt estates tend to be in the demy-sweet and sweet range, while the Sekts of smaller estates and the wine makers are mostly in the brut and extra brut range.

Event Review – The New Germany – Red, Dry, Sparkling

The German Wine Society finally returned to Old Europe restaurant for the The New Germany – Red, Dry, Sparkling event. It was an awesome event with great food and great wine to accompany it! Below is a small excerpt of the event:

Annette presented 3 red wines, 1 Sekt (sparkling wine) and 6 dry and 1 “halbtrocken” white wines from 10 out of the 13 wine regions in Germany.

The tasting also included 2 Grosse Lage/ Grand Cru GG wines.
Germany is increasingly becoming known as a serious red wine producer; Germany is the #3 producer world-wide of Pinot-Noir (= Spätburguder).

Germans have always been obsessed with sparkling wines: 1 out of 4 sparklers produced in the world is consumed in Germany; and Germany is home to the second largest sparkling wine producer world-wide.

Event Review – Salon Tasting at Schiller‘s Home: Domaine Weinbach, Alsace, Vintage 2014

Below is a brief excerpt reviewing the Salon Tasting at Schiller‘s Home that was open to GWS members:

The German Wine Society (Washington DC Chapter) organized a Domaine Weinbach tasting. It took place at our home and was limited to 16 people in order to fit around our large round table. Incoming GWS Secretary Joseph Aguiar was the event coordinator. Annette Schiller provided an overview on the wines of Alsace as well as some background information on Domaine Weinbach.

Domaine Weinbach comprises 27 hectares. Although all the bottles of Domaine Weinbach bear the name of the Clos des Capucins, only a small number originate from the Clos itself. The rest come from the Faller’s other holdings, including in their Grand Cru sites. Domaine Weinbach wines also come from vineyards they have leased and cultivate themselves.

GWS Pouring Wine at EU Embassy Day on May 14th, 2016

Christian and Annette Schiller pouring wine for patrons at Embassy day.
Last year the DC Chapter of the GWS poured several classic German varietal wines at the German Embassy Grounds for Washington, DC’s annual EU Embassy Day. Our mission was to educate the public on the wide variety and amazing quality of German wines.

The event was a tremendous success and once again the GWS will be pouring wine and educating the public on May 14th, 2016 at the German Embassy Grounds. Please take this amazing opportunity to not only visit the multitude of EU Embassies that open their doors for the day but to also stop by and taste wines with the GWS. Hope to see you there!
